Slightly incorrect. The map has never been enlarged. There were lots of black spaces around the current landmass that have since been filled out to the current square, but nothing has gone beyond the current square.
Do a search of the map from say 2007 and you'll see parts that extend out to the current limit with lots of black blocks around them. The only change is that these have been filled in. Map sizes (worldspaces) should correspond to height-maps (a black and white image that contains height gradient information) which uses image pixels sizes to determine the world space dimentions. So the map has always been a constant size it just now been filled out.

Indeed, if you wanted to add a new continent it would be very easy to do so. Because you would never physically walk there on a land bridge and you can't swim, it would be just as you say an easy task of adding a portal - or in the case of new continent probably a ship.

The new elf city does not exist on the runescape map. It seems to have been developed separately and is set in it's own world space. Easier for developers to work with and might lower lag for some players. They've just added a little invisible portal as you pass the elf guards that puts you into the new world space with a little bit of the runescape scenery skirting around the edges. If they increased the draw distance you could probably see the end of the 'skirt'.

Btw I'm just commenting on how the new elf city was implemented I'm by now means advocating that we have invisible portals everywhere to expand the map.. that would be very messy.

I guess its just tiny tiny to us since if we zoom it all out we know every area and it does look tiny. If you zoom in then it's huge, but yeah. I do completely

. I'd love love for it to be bigger & scaled out better. I have thought multiple times that Runescape's tiny.

- Pretty please Runescape get rid of some worlds to maybe get a few people in dead areas -

We need this. We need this. We need this.

Imagine the training spots between cities. Imagine the quest locations. Imagine the adventure of facing the unknown.

Cities would be spaced out and lodestones would feel less cheap and more useful. New teleport items. How exciting!

I'll say it again: We need this.

Yes, the world map has never been enlarged since before the release of Runescape 2, which is why we now have all the overcrowding issues in the centre of the map which is now over 10 years old. However, it has been extended outwards many times since then. I understand what you are saying about filling in the black squares, as that is all that has happened since 2007. Before that though, the amount of black space surrounding the map was increased several times as more land mass was added. Whether we are now at the limit of that extension as you suggest, or it was simply easier to fill in the existing black bits first, we may never know.

While I agree this might very well reduce lag for players, I think there is another reason why the elf city was implemented like this - some players haven't done the quest yet. For them, the elf city is still in seed form, so it wouldn't make sense lore wise for them to be able to see it on the world map. This is a problem when everybody has to use the same world map.

Hi Mod Matthe, Thanks for your post.

While disappointed, I can't say I'm really surprised by your statement, as an update of this magnitude was never going to be quick or easy.
But you must admit that some areas of the map are getting increasingly crowded (especially the F2P area) with new content frequently shoe-horned in wherever it will fit.
This is a situation that will only ever get worse. So we reserve the right to continue to day-dream, speculate, and otherwise pick holes in the current map in the hopes that we may one day convince you and your fellow Mods that this update is worth the time and effort involved.

*Crosses fingers and dreams of a newly expanded RS4.*
That's what really bothers me. the interface was clunky enough, but now the actual world is starting to look cluttered and ugly. it really ruins the feel of it all.
I'm imagining one of the devs lovingly creating a beautiful castle and then another coming along, years later to drop another soloman's store in front of it or something. :(

I would as well.
This is a dying game. Everything about it is just gaining XP and levels for a stupid cape, it's not about the unlocks. The skills are broken, combat system is dull and repetitive. And the MTX...lol.

Knowing the world map just makes it seem small. Remember that there is much more of the game world "beneath the surface"... Caverns, quest locations, instanced zones, etc.

I'm sure all of that combined would make you think twice about the "size of rs".... for instance Underground Pass ins HUGE!

I just have to say, I have enjoyed reading each post on this thread. I support this idea so much! And everyones else ideas too. You guys have wrote so much good stuff!

In addition to for larger cities, I also want more interactive cities! For example villagers talking to each other, they can laugh or just have normal conversations, everyone with different body languages, kids running around or playing with flying toy kites, villagers walking around and they can also go in and out of bars and buildings. Speaking of bars, there could be a drinking contest held or something like that. Also performances in several places around the city where villagers also watching. THERE ARE SO MANY IDEAS TO ADD HERE! But you get my point.
Jagex can do so much to actually make a more living and interactive city, and a more real and exiting playing experience!

I hope so much for this to happen! Anyway, sadly this won't either happen at all or not any time soon. But I hope that Jagex starts a little bit even now, and hopefully then somewhen in 2016 this could be done. Better late than never, right?! This will take lots time but when it comes out it's gonna be amazing! Let's hope for that though, I have big expectations!

Kind regards :)
