The concept of it all doesn't seem like it would be too hard, for me at least.

Step 1. blow up the size of Gelienor by like 3x or something.
Step 2. Cut and paste cities to where they match their previous locations, but are now smaller in comparison to the new, big continent.
Step 3. Fill empty spaces with forests and goodies.

I know that the project would take MUCH more than just that, but the initial concept isn't too hard to grasp.

The trick is knowing where to slice the current map so that quests, teleports, training times etc. are not adversely affected. And that's something Jagex could be considering now as areas are being updated - defining and cleaning up invisible break-points (like tectonic fault lines) so the map can be easily scaled up at a later date.

Hi Mod Matthe, Thanks for your post.

While disappointed, I can't say I'm really surprised by your statement, as an update of this magnitude was never going to be quick or easy. But you must admit that some areas of the map are getting increasingly crowded (especially the F2P area) with new content frequently shoe-horned in wherever it will fit. This is a situation that will only ever get worse. So we reserve the right to continue to day-dream, speculate, and otherwise pick holes in the current map in the hopes that we may one day convince you and your fellow Mods that this update is worth the time and effort involved.

*Crosses fingers and dreams of a newly expanded RS4.*

I'm hoping they do this with the elf area. Adding mountains, large rivers, etc really adds to the immersive-ness.

One can only hope. :/

Well, to be fair the only reason you can see a desert next to lumbridge is lore reasons. If you don't want to look yourself for a detailed version, the synopsis is this: Zaros was invading what we know as the desert. In it's time it was a lush green forest like lumbridge. One of the gods of the area decided to implode killing almost all his army, and a very large portion of Zaros's. Thus, scorching the area into what it is now.

^ That just explains why the desert exists at all, not why it is so close to Lumbridge that you can actually see it, or why there is such an abrupt change going from Lumbridge to Al Kharid. The walls and cliffs separating to two don't seem big enough of a feature to have that kind of effect.

It's usually a gradual transition between regions:
Lush
->
scrub
->
sparse
->
desert

Instead we have:
Lush
->
desert

The restricted size of the current world map doesn't have the room to allow for that kind of gradual transition in quite the same way that an expanded world map would.
