Sure, Jagex can milk the game and keep it on life support with micro transactions from it's current nostalgic minority but honestly I wouldn't think that is the best business plan. Especially if it plans to compete with these other brilliant looking mmo's.

This statement is so true. Hopefully in RS4.. :P

I've been playing Runescape since it's earliest days. It's indeed time, if not overdue, for a world expansion. If they are going to do more of these "gods returning" events, they'll need a lot more space to place all these huge areas they are going for. They are constantly removing and rearranging houses and other landscape elements to fit in these large battlefields and events. They are also not removing them either, so they are basically now useless and ugly giant fields of nothing They make areas around the towns feel even more cramped.

On another, note, their idea to put giant red rocks next to Lumbridge for Al Kharid is just so out of place and if there were more space between the towns, it would look so much better. Honestly, a lot of people teleport, but only those with higher levels. Even with Lodestones, newer players still walk distances to get to smaller areas, so it wouldn't be a completely useless effort. It'll also bring more image to the game and more players, in my opinion. I play a ton of different MMOs, and generally, players love the openness of a large and well spaced world.

As someone said before, it'd be nice if things such as rivers had a variety of sizes, more kinds of trees, and so on.

they should make another world, next to gielinor, with new things and quests and stuff.

thats a huge thing to make, but maybe better than remaking gielinor

Lets say they come out with the eastern lands, designed around the visuals of html5 in mind with tall structures, more detailed textures and just overall more visually stunning, what's the current game world going to look and feel like to newer players in comparison to the new one?

The world size is fine to me, my only problems are:

- runescape is very flat which in java isn't noticeable but in html5 it's very obvious, any pre-revamped locations make the game look out of place and comes across as poor production quality.

- the visuals make no sense, especially to newer players who don't keep up to date on forums/websites, some areas look detailed, sharp and look really nice where as others like varrock look terrible in comparison, it's like walking through an unfinished game, this isn't so much of a complaint rather than curiousity as to why this hasn't been addressed

- updating locations one at a time is forever going to look weird.

if one team is dedicated to revamping the towns/cities of runescape in one sitting, it's one after the other of similar ideas, similar palettes, the world will transition nicely, if you space them all across several months you'll forever be behind, you'll update edgeville, two months later, tzharr, two months later, yanille then suddenly due to the time frame edgeville looks bad compared to yanille because new styles / palettes have been created since, i do not understand the logic for this

Yeah, if you look in the patch notes after updates there's often a bottom option containing html5 bugfixes but there's only so much they can do as of right now and anytime in the near future as they're dependent on third party software which has yet to be developed to proceed development themselves, they're a bit ahead of themselves on this one

I still use the Java client, I will never go to Html-5... I feel that I work hard in life between both my jobs, my daughter, a divorce, etc.. I want to enjoy the game not work my boosom off just to get city to city. I don't mind the size. I actually prefer it the way it is so I don't have to work so hard. It is a game, supposed to be fun not hard and complicated and tedious. I want to enjoy my time and skill not walk and keep on walking. I have limited time on the computer, so my time is spent skilling, keep it the way it is please!

I did some measurements using average approximations and using pixels.

The size of runescape (including water) is about 5.5 kilometres squared.

To put that into perspective, Central Park in New York is 3.5 kilometres squared.

5.5 km^2 is about 0.5% of New York City.

Also, is it about 0.000001% of the planet.
Considering Gielinor is the same size as earth (due to similiar gravity), this is kind of funny. Then again, magic most likely has a substantial effect on the gravitational and geological effects of the planet, so it is probably considerably smaller.

It's kinda weird though how a whole continent is so small when compared to the real world.
