All that space in between population centers would be unexplored, but lush wilderness bountiful in resources. Exploration would go from a forced roleplay activity to an unofficial skill. Throw in day/night cycles, aggressive monsters spawning rarely in uninhabited areas at night, and randomly generated daemonheim style dungeons and Gielinor would be a wondrously vast and dangerous but rewarding realm to traverse. Meeting another player would be (hopefully) a rare luxury. Sure it would seem empty and lonely at first, but it would build the foundation for another decade of Runescape content.

Why not make it an official skill though? If they actually added everything you suggested, I could see it becoming a very viable skill, something that could work extremely well. We already have so many areas in game that we could "reexplore" to get experience. And it doesn't just have to be exploring. A minigame to get Exploration up is basically already set in the game, they would just need to add the mechanics: The Dig Site area east of Varrock. You could discover fossils and ancient artifacts and that could give you XP in Exploration.

As for the random dungeons, I would suggest random excavation sites popping up, maybe have a main NPC find them around the world and if you see him, he will let you explore and you can learn some stuff and get XP.

There is so much in Gielinor that could be turned into an exploration skill, it would be really fun.

I think this is a great idea, although I have a story to tell.

I remember way back watching my friend play WoW. I was a loyal RS player even back then, but I was watching him and he talked about how WoW was so much better than RS. So I decided to sit there and watch what he was doing. He had to go from one town to the next. So, he ran for like 15 minutes through a swampy forest with absolutely nothing in sight to reach his destination. After a while I asked, "...so what part of this is fun to you?"

I understand Jagex wouldn't upscale the world that big, I just remembered this and thought it was funny :P

Yeah I used to play a lot of TERA and it was the same there. I actually timed my run on foot about 6 months ago, just through one section of the desert, in one of MANY regions and it took me 13 mins and 24 secs to go from one side to the other lol.

Games like that were too big (imo) and kind of felt lonely. I'd hope that jagex would give players a reason to go outside of LRC, Warbands and the G.E to actually justify making the game bigger.

Of course, that would be the drawback of expanding the game world. However, if the map was expanded, I'm sure Jagex would take this into account and expand the currently available transportation networks to compensate. There may even be scope to introduce a few new ones too (mounts!?!)

Every major town and city already has it's own lodestone, meaning you would only have to make the arduous 15 minute walk to get there once. Then you can unlock the loadstone for near instantaneous travel to that location. You'll never have to make that trek through the intervening space again, unless you want to, or there is a specific resource or attraction contained within it that you want to take advantage of.

I'm sure if the map were to be expanded, the first thing Jagex would do would be to add more lodestones at minor towns, villages and other points of interest that don't already have them.
–= MEGA Construction Rework =–

Freeform Buildings, Surface World Plots, Community Involvement, Environments, Skills and much, much more...!

I always come back to this post because I love it

I believe full implementation of html5 will be necessary as a catalyst to muster support for such a massive update. With html5 graphics, where we can see far off into the distance, the amusement park-sized runescape world is shamefully exposed for all to see (especially in higher elevations).

As Jon Stryder said, lodestones and such would be able to placate dissidents, problems may arise with resource locations, but I am sure this can be accommodated. Also, mounts would be pretty cool, great source of revenue for Jagex, Im sure its enticing.

In the mean time, we should annoy jagex on twitter and forums so they put this idea up for a vote, if we feel that other players would support.

Well they could also make the map bigger one piece at a time (maybe start in the f2p area first :P ), since if they started it now, it would probably take at least a year just to get the content in for the whole map, not to mention the bugs that would occur from this.

Yes this makes sense. But what they will probably do is make a beta server for expanded map one section at a time so most of the bugs can be worked out there.
