I think there is a huge risk that any potential new skill will be anything but new. There are only so many things to do that fit the game.
We already have skills that repeat ideas, concepts. Some actually work some...mwa..

Aviation is certainly a bland new skills from all angles. We weren't able to fly before Stormguard Citadel.

Believe me I can fly, I'm proud that I can fly. To give the best of mine, the heaven in the sky. :)

There are some ideas I've got in my mind for some time

Sailing - Mix of POP, Temple trekking and Uncharted isles, elite skill (construction, fishing, agility or possibly new exploration skill)

Exploration - Search for hidden areas and objects, solve mysteries and micro quests, research the all possible informations about Runescape.

Merchanting/Trading - inspired by other games, make local goods and manage the trade routes

Collector - obtain various rare items from all other skills and manage your collections. Not sure if it's still relevant after release of archaeology :/

Leatherworking - elite extension of crafting for range armours (you need crafting, hunter and ranging)

Tailoring - elite extension of crafting for mage armours (you need crafting, runecrafting and magic)

I propose the music skill.

Music is an idea that I think has a lot of potential. After all, RuneScape currently doesn't have a lot of ways to support other players in ways that most MMOs do (largely owing to the fact that, since RuneScape doesn't use a class system, support classes aren't a thing here), and Bards are one of the textbook-definition support roles in fantasy settings.

Half of this is just...playing the game? I like the ideas of extending crafting, and that could be fit into a rework and extension to 120 for crafting.

I still think, like others, that sailing (despite probably never happening), could be a viable, stand-alone skill. If it required you to actually interact with a boat, ship, etc. through an instance (similar to dungeoneering) and allowed you to sail to areas far away (essentially just joining the Ports voyages).

The key reward would be a) access to new areas that cannot be accessed another way, b) occasionally finding treasure or spotting rare sea creatures, and c) potentially money-making through things like bringing passengers.

Training the Sailing skill could be done solo or group, but they would need to make training be based on a scaling that is exactly equal to the number of players on the vessel. This would allow solo to be the same experience per time spent as groups; this could even allow potentially dozens of people to train on the same vessel, which could be a cool large group activity in Runescape. Training this way should allow or individual sailors to get exp regardless of if others leave the instance (unlike dungeoneering, which sometimes prohibits finishing a floor - booooo).

Progression in sailing would allow for several things: greater exp gains, access to regions further away, faster travel times (and even fast-travel unlocks) and upgrades to vessels. Ports could even tie into the skill by allowing for small amounts of exp to be gained passively.

There are lots of unique things to sailing that might be ways to train, with experience coming from a successful voyage: charting a course, dealing with weather events, repairing the vessel (incorporating other skills like crafting, construction or woodcutting), steering, dealing with sails, etc.

Sailing could also easily be turned into the next elite skill (req: 80 construction, fishing, and dungeoneering).

Personally im not sure how "sailing" could work under the current game engine.... at least i doubt it would be what players "expect" from such a skill.

At the moment I would love to see Crafting and Fletching obtain some overhaul much in the way mining and smithing received. Rebalencing range and magic equipment and giving the said classes their versions of "masterwork" would be great.

I kinda think they should attempt another "elite" skill for their next new skill.

That's exactly it. I know Sailing is a long-requested skill, but realistically, what would we get out of it that we don't already have? We already explore charted and uncharted islands in the Arc, we send ships out for trade goods from Ports, we can sail between various quick-travel points with Chartered Ships... what does that leave? Ship battles like Cabin Fever? Sure, that could be kind of fun I guess, but it's not really enough to justify an entire skill in and of itself.

If there was ever a time where Sailing deserved to be a separate skill, it's long since passed us by.

Original message details are unavailable.

That's likely coming in the next couple of years. Not only is it a highly requested update (two of the three highest-voted options from last year's year-end survey were for Ranged and Magic gear to get such reworks), but, at least in the case of Woodcutting/Fletching, a lot of the groundwork has probably already been done with the Mining/Smithing rework since it'd probably function close to that.
