This is a nice idea, but I'm afraid it's heavily outside the scope of a small island. A city island, even one that has been ruined, is something the size of Aquillar which I'm already having to not include in ROP because it'll be too big a graphics drain for this point in time.

Perhaps a smaller version, keeping the mechanics and the lore, but not a city sized?

Hmm. I thought this might be too ambitious for this project, but it is good to hear that you like it! (Interesting to confirm that we won’t be getting Aquilar as well.)

This island suffered an absolute catastrophe. Along with suddenly going upside down and sinking to near the core, several pieces would have broken off. Perhaps for this project, the island can be one such piece—it broke off and drifted away after the inversion. There’d only be one cave, which players will need to unblock once. The cave would lead in to a former residence, and in there we would find the juicy stuff. (There could also be creatures on the surface.) This shard of the island need not be near the core, making the rockfalls and lightning optional—though I imagine the lightning would be the least problematic thing about this pitch.

I was remiss to not mention what kind of lore we’d get from such a place. I was aiming to have it depict life on Abbinah after the Aviansies had returned there, leading up to the rise and (relatively short) reign of this oppressive merchant-king. The purpose of the trinket(s) would be to take them to a scholarly-minded Aviansie elsewhere, who would tell you what it was (a ceremonial necklace from the pre-Armadyl days), how the merchant-king got it, and what happened to his island.

Oh, and I even have a name for the main island: “Awa’kelt Dar’Kat,” or “Dar’Kat’s Folly.”

Arbitrary fun idea:
Pitch me an aviansie island.

The Island of Smoke

The Island of Smoke would be a, not-so-surprisingly, island covered in smoke. The island would be largely clear when you first arrive but through the POWER OF CONSTRUCTION you will shortly be adding in your own runecrafting altar as the centerpiece. Located at the edge of the island studying the odd, fire-less smoke would be an aviansie academic who you would inform of Gielinor rune studies and work with to figure out how you are going to interact with the island.

In light of the cosmology stuff we got at Runefest I would like to see the runic energy of Abbinah be explored in the game by studying the concentration of Smoke energy, much like how the Moon Clan identified certain areas of Gielinor for having strong links to certain runic energies. Before participating in the activity you would need to engage with the aviansie academic and do research on Lunar Isle about the original runecrafting alter creation on Gielinor.

The skilling activity would be creating your own runecrafting altar as best you can and utilizing it for as long as it stays stable and intact. While using the altar either faults could appear and stop you or pieces of the stone dolmens you constructed will break and have to be fixed. The product of this method would be a small number of Smoke Runes to stay thematic but a larger-than-expected (more high level appropriate versus the low level you can start crafting Smoke Runes at) bunch of experience because you are doing all of this without an established altar.

I think that the primary purpose of this island would be the research and lore established by it, and the Runecrafting method would be supplementary and thematic, possibly even viable for training or profit. Preferably somewhere else on Abbinah Smoke runes would be needed creating a self-contained cycle.

Isle of Soaring Scales

Below the shell of floating islands, neverending storms and the whirlwind of shattered rock and earth, the great oceanic core of Abbinah churns, roiled by constant volcanic activity below the ocean floor. Most aquatic lifeforms of any real stature stay well away from the great thermal vents, but one hardy species of fish is so bold that it chooses to seek out vents that emit enormous plumes of pressurized water and particulate, working them into its mating behavior.

Prospective males will swim and dance precariously close to these plumes, while bullying other males and attempting to force them into the stream. Inevitably some fish will be pushed or drift into the raging current - those that strayed too close may manage to escape before the surface or be shot out at an angle - these toughened ichthyoids return not much worse for wear. But those who were shoved inward are helpless to escape - the plume of water jets upward through the atmosphere like an aqueous pillar soaring into the heavens. While there are a number of such extraordinary heat vents below the ocean floor, only one stable island above is so situated as to view the phenomenon - or to take advantage of it. When the geyser has dissipated into vapor below, any fish that was forced into its throes continues its assent, cresting above the floating rock before gravity wins out.

While these visitors from below are not common enough to form the basis for an industry, the resulting tradition of sky fishing does provide an alternative, small-scale food source, and for some aviansie, a means of entertainment. A large net serves as the primary tool of the trade, used while hovering in flight to catch the soaring fish as it descends. A human visitor would need to improvise - the fish are flung up too far from the island's edge to attempt this. Perhaps a net on the end of a large pole would suffice - if one were careful not to drop it or let the impact break their arms.

The Higher Corvidiologic Archive for Automatectonic Study (and lesser groupoid gift shop)

The Aviantese are renowned for their mastery of smithing, crafting, and magic, and nowhere is this better expressed than in their long legacy of golem and automata creation, from WE2 golems, to clan avatars, to summoned 'minions'. The Archive is a museum that celebrates the culmination of Aviansie craftsmanship.

Or at least it used to be. But these days, the disheveled, eccentric academic who runs the Archive can barely keep a handle on its 'living exhibits,' and constantly finds his ancient minions, prototype golems, and archaic avatars wandering off across the breadth of Abbinah - or even beyond!

Misshapen robots and homunculi hobble around the cramped island, littered with crafted detritus, messy workbenches, and leaning, claustrophobic bookcases. From time to time (not all at once), the custodian will notice one of his exhibits has gone missing, and entreat adventurers to find and return it.

Most 'exhibits' will be hiding somewhere in Abbinah. But more advanced automata might find their way to Gielinor, on a pilgrimage of their own to Armadylean sites. When we find the automaton, we can read its exhibit placard, detailing the history of the period in which that creature was manufactured, or otherwise going into detail on the craftsmen, techniques, and artisan culture of Abbinah. We return it to the custodian for (possibly) a small chunk of XP (summoning? smithing? crafting?)

Or maybe he just gives us something from the gift shop...

So this is a good idea, that I'm going to highlight as an example. Similar to the feather memories earlier, this island has a central mechanic that is extremely simple but scales out quite nicely. It gives you an optional thing to do for a reward, but isn't demanding.

Graphically we don't need anything new. The descriptions of broken benches and the like are nice, but they're not vital for the mechanic. All we really need is an interesting inventory character and some golems.

Fortunately we already have aviansie golems from World Event 2, so there are no new graphics needed here. The inventor we can cobble together from aviansie kit we'll need for RoP anyway, so again no new graphics.

He doesn't even need to be locked to one island. He could appear on any island and then you'll need to remember where you found him in order to bring the golem back. A nice bit of gameplay there for those who care.

So let's think about the reward for doing this. Obviously this is going to take time, and it's going to break me out of whatever gameplay loop I have currently created for myself. So how is it worth it?

If we give XP, then the XP needs to be really high value to matter. Because it needs to make up for the time that I have lost.

So what about something else?

Could we offer a lasting buff? "Inventor's genius" which provides the player with a benefit when skilling on Abbinah? Perhaps getting some bonus XP per skilling interaction, or perhaps offering a chance at extra resources? Or perhaps something even more bizarre?

I'd really like you guys to think about islands like this. Small, interesting and offer fun mechanics that can enhance the gameplay of the rest of Abbinah. :)

Loving the ideas so far guys, but I'm wary of big graphical ideas because I'm already going to be fighting hard for the core Abbinah stuff. I might steal a bunch of the interesting lore ideas from here anyway, some nice thoughts to throw around the place. :)

Mod Raven Rocks!

Include some slight Xau-Tak lore?????

No I don't think this is the place for Xau-Tak references.

RavenSworn ones however...

I mean come on... Ravensworn is a given. :P

Not sure Xau-Tak is appropriate for ROP, so I'm unlikely to reference anything in that department.

The issue for Xau-Tak lore is would there be any logical reasonto include it?

Did Xau-Tak cone to abbinah? Or was Xau-tak the reason for abbinah's current state?
Did Armadyl personally come across Xau-tak?
Would the avianese have sent an expedition to a world that Xau-tak had influenced?

From current game lore, i dont think tge Avianese wouldn't give any more than second hand (heck, third or 4th hand might even be too generous) accounts of something about Cau-tak.
Most of their activity was focused on Abbinah and Gielinor.
Even Armadyl's wanderings after the God Wars didn't give an indication he came across a world of Xau-tak, even if Armadyl was aware of it after the fact.
