....and what about charging for best-in-slot gear ahead of release, or exclusively?
Jagex may be looking for loose change, but they aren't stupid.
You put up t97 gear on the Marketplace and you kill any hype you have for the next boss release right then and there.
Players won't be able to race for the first drops and the ability to name their in-game gp price for them if everyone has already purchased them weeks in advance with real money. That's a very large part of PvM content right there. It's such a harmful step that Jagex simply won't do it. Period.
So you're willing to let the game die because you don't want Jagex to have more funds to develop it?
Let's just say, I'm pretty confident Jagex didn't simply forget to list the alternative when it came to Hero Pass.
Why? There wasn't an alternative in the first place. Jagex isn't in financial straits. They've done well for themselves year after year and you can actually view that data publicly.
Jazz - both of us want Jagex to be better at communicating. However, I want Jagex to be honest. They wouldn't be if they were going to offer some kind of sob story that the game needs players to buy into various battle pass systems on top of the already existing subscription model that funds most of the company anyway.
I honestly believe Jagex is making more money from MTX vs memberships. Wonder how much they get from Solomon's Store and TH. Bet it's a lot of money. I know there are players that got maxed using TH. Loads of cosmetics and other junk in Solomon's. Loads of players use Bonds to buy VIP. So I bet you they do not get as much from memberships as you might think.

Yes, I absolutely think Jagex do make more money on MTX (note: MTX as what the entertainment industry and real world regulators defined, not some Jagex game players proclaimed).
It won't surprise me a lot of Jagex Bond MTX revenue just got transferred to another of their game when they replaced Sands Casino from RS3 with the non-gambling while the very same Sand Casino in the other game was only being modified into any gambling Arena.
All games of the sizes of Jagex's Runescape games need more MTX to survive than most of their players think. Jagex might be able to hide their
true MTX color
before the regulation net closed in, but now we know they are actually legally and officially MTX.

They make more from subscriptions.
All Financial information is relevant for the Year Ended 2021. Jagex considers Bonds, TH Keys, and RuneCoins to be MTX.
Jagex made £88,940,273 from Subscriptions. ($110,462,484).
Jagex made £34,557,610 from MTX. ($42,920,033).

Assuming what you quoted is correct, MTX revenue still made up of close to 30% of Jagex's 2021 revenue. It is very significant, of course. Thanks for making it obvious MTX is significant for the survival of Jagex, just like to their other peers.
