Haven't logged in in a week, so read the main page and saw the "shop" for Christmas, and I am beyond disgusted.
When they made holiday items untradeable, they basically assigned a cachet to the fun stuff from classic holiday events that was commensurate with things like lava capes, etc: if you didn't do it, you weren't there, well..too bad. It wasn't yours.
To place things like snowglobes, s'antar spawn, and so on into a grind-token shop is such a devaluation of loyalty to the game.
Things like santa hats, which I busted butt to earn years ago when they only cost 30-40M, are now a mutlibillionaire's toy.
Have to say, I never ever want to hear again some combat junky saying "if you don't do it, you can't expect to have it" about things like levelled gear in a skill.
If you weren't around for the untradeables, tough shit. You shouldn't be able to get them for having no life.
Or, just make the existing ones, earned by BEING HERE, tradeable.
Oh wait, no--that would upset the boss billionaires, lolol.
Kill the game faster, why don't you? smh

Imagine being one of those people that thinks engaging in a Christmas Event to earn previous events' Christmas rewards is going to kill the game. Couldn't be me.

I was pretty happy about having been around to get Sparkles, the garland snake pet, as a reward - and I'm actually pretty okay with people being able to get Sparkles today.

I've knocked a fair few of the items off the shop fairly quickly today. I don't think I would say you need to give up your life in order to obtain the items. Mayhaps, you have placed a value on an untradeable that was merely sentimental, and that you only cared about that item as it pertained to its rarity?

It's Christmastime, sheesh.

As for the event as a whole - this is EXACTLY how Jagex should do ANY holiday event. There's a quest for players who just want a short experience with a reward to remember it by. There's a skilling station for xp and wrapping paper and previous cosmetic points for the afk-scapers. There's the Purple Santa for the whales. There's the Black Partyhat for the people like the person above who only care about an item's rarity even. The longterm rewards that actually take some effort are freaking hats and scarves - evocative of an earlier Christmas season - that can be recolored like the Max/Comp capes!

then you have the uniquely Christmassy things like the Secret Santa returning (someone gave me 3m in battle staves today. Thank you!) and the Advent Calendar, and a totally new every-weekend present opening sesh with 1999 (at most) of your best pals (or just like-minded individuals) where someone might get something really really special. Or you could pick up those items at your leisure if crowds aren't your thing.

It's all. so. satisfying.

Generally joyful about this one, Jagex. It's like you read a certain 'holiday compromise' thread by a certain someone and decided she was worthy of the Nice List...or something. :)

Cheers.

cheers to you too.

I would prefer holiday events to be one of those fun little quests with a fun toy with which to remember it.

But they haven't been in years. They are grindfests for token transactions.

The purpose of making holiday items untradeable was to keep them rare, and a keepsake for being there and participating, as opposed to rares for billionaire merchers.

And now that is negated, which destroys the value of the rare keepsake. Yes, a sentimental value. Which is still a value, and one more valuable in some ways than simply grinding something, whether it be an event or a boss.

The being there, and doing it.

Again, never want to hear another "if you don't do it, tough shit".

and they can take my 4M+ "loyalty" points and shove them.

Hello,
I am confused on this ability to purchase the Santas Letter from the shop for 400 Christmas spirit.
We are allowed three letters a day
1 from speaking with Clemente
1 from doing all of your dailies
1 from randomly skilling in the Christmas village

So for my situation. I spoke with Clemente, got one. I spent some time skilling in the village, got another. But I do not have time to do all my dailies. So I went to purchase that ticket and it says LOCKED.
I have also NOT been able to do the holiday quest yet either. So, I guess my question in two fold. Is the option LOCKED because I have not done the holiday quest yet? or is it only allowed to be purchased for the missed ticket from skilling in the village.
I was under the assumption you could purchase that ticket if you missed either of the three I have mentioned above ( speaking with Clemente, completing all dailies, skilling in village).

If anyone has a definitive answer to my question, I would greatly appreciate it.
.
THanks and CHeers....

I'm going to say this as someone who happens to like that items are untradeable from holiday celebrations.

Jagex didn't make these items untradeable to preserve rarity, but because of how much of an effect the rares market - which only consisted of holiday items - had on the rest of the game's economy. (Think of this way - Jagex -WANTED- players to be able to trade any duplicate party hats they found on the ground at the time to their friends as a part of the Christmas festivities. That's the exact opposite of promoting "rarity".)

Secondly, these items are still "untradeable" - and you can easily equate your 15 minutes of getting a snow globe back in the day to another player's 45 minutes getting it from this year's event. In both cases - you both had to earn the snow globe by doing a Christmas event.

Thirdly, sentimental value can't be taken away from you unless you allow it to be taken from you. If you enjoyed getting that snow globe back when it was released, did that enjoyment really suddenly disappear because it was back on the rewards shop a decade or so later?

I prefer the short and sweet events too - but the reality is, there are people out there who like the xp-fests, and buying a cool item off of Treasure Hunter, and chasing the mega-rare wealth flex item, more than the short quests with priceless items - and in this year's Christmas event, Jagex found a way to make EVERYONE accounted for here. It's huge progress.
---

Valena, there are a couple of things I might try here.

1. I might check my bank for seeing if I had accidentally put away a letter.
2. I might speak to Clementine again.
3. I would log out, log in, and try to purchase the letter from Holly again.

If those three things don't work, and you knew for sure that the reset time had passed - then it's possibly a bug.

I don't believe the letters are locked to the quest - as I got my Christmas Village letter on release day doing the construction activity FOR the quest.

yes, way back in the day, Christmas crackers lay on the ground, and anyone there to pick up as many as they wanted could have a full set of p-hats and then some.

And could trade them if they wished.

Not a problem, that was the rules.

They became rare precisely because they were dropped then and then only, then became vastly unaffordable as time went by and people who had a raft of them could indeed gradually get the price into the billions.

Unfortunate, but not a problem. They were available to everyone once and once only--you had to be there. As they were tradeable FROM THE OUTSET, anyone can still get them. Theoretically. IF they are a multibillionaire.

A santa or a p-hat is as out of reach for the average player today as any (formerly) untradeable, because of what that had-to-be-there-long-ago rarity has done to the price.

Sorry, but we must agree to disagree. It isn't just the cool toy, but that it was available through a FUN, SPECIFIC, community event. And it was fun on holidays to see others who you could tell were there too, and talk with them, or others would ask questions and again, talk and have fun.

Fun and fun toys have not been available for some time, because of some of the things you cite, yes. People do want to grind xp instead, or just...buy something.

How nice if they came up with something original instead.

Not holding my breath.

Next time I want something in game, I'll just expect to get it because I want it, lol.

Contrary to what I thought, I actually have plenty of old Christmas items I missed out the past years despite having played this game for 22 years.

It seems like I am going to spend more time in Santa Village than I planned for. The good thing is all the activities are 100% AFK and I have phone, so not too big a nuisance even when I am going out shopping or visiting friends.

Remember if you hand in the daily santa sack presents you get 200 points x 7 days x 5 weeks is another 7k free points.

Old account I need 6k points and on this I need 21k + 4k for the 2 new items, it won't take long I think it's about 3k at fishing and 2k afking snowballs.
