At one point they explained the purpose of that rule. It's just to further reinforce the idea that you need to be physically in control of the device.

So if your cat jumps up there and breaks every rule in about 10 seconds, there is no excuse for it.

AFK

AFK training is Away From Keyboard training. While you are playing on our games, you must be at the computer. Away-from-keyboard training is not allowed, and you should log out when you leave the computer.

To keep RuneScape enjoyable for everyone, please observe and follow our rules. We will not tolerate disruptive players, and if you break our rules your account is likely to be banned or muted. Members who are banned or muted for breaking our rules are not entitled to any sort of refund.

i would say this was more deter from people doing this back in the day (and also now) from when people (kids) played in libraries and at school etc. as more of a security to stop them getting hacked.

stepping away from the game now to answer door, make some tea etc would be silly to be against the rules. and back then too.

AFK training was fairly unfeasible back when the automatic logout timer was 90 seconds. When the timer was increased to 5 minutes, it made sense that the rule against it was scaled back. These days a lot of content is designed around AFK and multi-tasking, for better or worse. Low on bank space? Click here .

I must say that the context has been lost over the years giving AFK another purpose one that is prohibited. Hopefully this thread will bring back said context.

With keybinding in RS3, we don't have to look at the screen to stay online legitimately in a lot of case, including killing 4k enrage Telos for some players. At least in the case of RS3, what exactly is AFK is not really a big issue, especially when there are no 3PC allowed in RS3 so there are far far less undetected macros.

The "AFK"' phenomenon in RuneScape is getting ridiculously out of hand.

Everyone wants to be distracted from actually playing the game while - somehow - still "playing" the game.

It's akin to macroing, whether you want to admit it or not.

Gaining gains while not looking at the screen is, technically speaking, a violation of the game rules.

I mean, compare the botter who macros 120 Woodcutting in 2 weeks (for instance) to the player who clicks a Yew tree, gets up to make a sandwich, and comes back with 28 yew logs in their inventory. The difference is merely inches and degrees.

I feel that the logout timer should be shortened. Massively.

If you don't want to play RuneScape, then for fuck sake don't log in.

"AFK" content is an game industry standard now, even for action based games like Diablo 4 they have added AFK Thorn Barbarian build. When the game industry is getting crowded with all kinds of new games and new genres, as well as living dead classic games that aren't wanted by new school players but aren't shut down yet, all kinds of games want to add such "AFK" content to attract causal players and the yet to be exploded non-gamer markets.

It is smart for RS3 to have such causal content. It is also an anti-botting measure as when their causal players can legitimately pay less attention to their screen, they are less vulnerable to botters and harmful sites.

I suppose there is a general misunderstanding of this simple term and in today's gaming environment, people have to understand that the "Online Game" whatever it is, is just that. A place to play and relax, blow off steam, etc.....NOT A PLACE TO WORK, you come to a game to PLAY. That denotes pure fun and enjoyment. Now, for those who consider working in an online environment to be fun and rewarding, then it exists, do it. For those who simply want to PLAY and have some mindless fun, let us get to the end of the work and just do that.

In either case, the company that spends its money developing this game has to be compensated with real profit to continue doing so. Having both of these concepts available to players fosters the whole profit center idea beautifully. So for those who want to work, do it, for those who want to play do it. Everybody wins and has their fun doing it.

Why would you afk? Why would you bot? Surely if you play a game, you "play a game". How can you be playing if you are not there to do it? Anything other than actually playing the game has got to be some form of cheating both the game and your ability to play and progress in the game. It's clearly dishonest in some form, and against the spirit of gaming. AAARRGGHHH! I need a bigger sword!!!
