We knew Jagex was working on a game called Runescape Remastered according to Fukong's preview on Chinajoy. This is the description of the game:
"Runescape Remastered
Game Focus
- Takes place at the end of the 6th Age.
- Open more expansive world with the removal of the blocky grid-system/0.6 second tick system.
- Added height features and a more 3D world than RS3 (think of Skyrim).
- Allows for Offline skill training.
To be Determined
An ability to shapeshift into a variety of NPCs/content.
- Community oriented markets, cities, and other mechanics.
- World roaming bosses for PvM.
- Unique PvP interactions across the game world."
Since then, all indications have been this game is cancelled and Jagex is now working on a survival game, not an MMO anymore.
But what happened to the MMORPG work they have done to the former Runescape Remastered? Take a look at recent content of RS3:
"- Takes place at the end of the 6th Age.
(Done: we are official at the Age of Chaos, after the 6th Age)
- Open more expansive world with the removal of the blocky grid-system/0.6 second tick system.
(somewhat happening. We will have a 0.3 second tick system instead of a total removal of it)
- Added height features and a more 3D world than RS3 (think of Skyrim).
(somewhat happening. We are already getting more 3D graphics and VFX, and Jmods showed us they can be as tall as Solak and Vorago)
- Allows for Offline skill training.
To be Determined
An ability to shapeshift into a variety of NPCs/content.
- Community oriented markets, cities, and other mechanics.
(Got Fort Forinthry already)
- World roaming bosses for PvM.
- Unique PvP interactions across the game world."
We can easily see many of the major RS Remastered content is beginning to show up on RS3 recently. What do you like to see next? I will like to get shapeshifting next, and playable races if possible.
