It's not quite the end of combat for us, mostly just the end of range xp from a cannon for us.
Read edit first.
For recoiling, which I happened to have Crawling Hands to test on, you have to make it your target by either of the two methods I had mentioned, the arrow in the upper left of the hot bar or clicking it with a c'bow on and no ammo. Then you cast your curse to get it on you, if you used the c'bow method to target, just spam curse until it does it, usually after two "you don't have any ammo" messages. From here you can use any of the mage abilities without doing any damage so long as you don't have any spell selected for autocast. These shouldn't cause any damage, some will even get the ones around you to attack you as well. Using just one ability should make it count when you recoil it to death.
Short Version:
-Target
-Cast curse
-Use mage ability before it dies
-Recoil to death
Another odd thing I noticed was that when i had nearly killed one by recoil only, a guy came up and hit it and killed it for me giving me the slayer xp and counting toward my task, but with no drop.
Just make a trial account and get a basic task from Turael and attempt to recoil it like I said above. You should be able to get the slayer xp without any hp gain. You may run into some glitched creatures too. I had Icefiends at one point and no matter what I did I couldn't gain any hp xp whatsoever.
Edit: After further testing, it is possible to hit with the abilities so I wouldn't chance it. I'm attempting to kill wolves on a trial account and the basic keeps hitting somehow, but I'm not getting the slayer xp if it dies and the ability doesn't hit. I'm starting to think that you either need adrenaline or have an ability do its effect on the creature. Your safest bet for finishing any recoil task would be to co-op slay and not attack any. It seems a bit random overall, I'll have to do further testing later.
