Seems I may have found a rather consistent way to recoil without gaining hp xp. this method involves using the Mage ability Chain, while technically you could use all mage abilities. It's rather simple and straightforward.
Optional step: (Reccomened) Relogg to clear any offensive spell you may have cast/selected during that play session.
1. Target your creature. Do not use the attack option to target, use the arrow on the upper left side of the hotbar. Using the attack option will act as if you have selected a spell, making the next step hit.
2. Use the Chain ability. Mage abilities won't give xp/do damage so long as you never select an offensive elemental spell. For some reason as soon as you select a spell to cast that would normally do damage, even without runes on you, the abilities will start to hit. This can be reset by simply relogging.
3. Recoil to death. Just make sure that you actually used Chain on the creature that dies. If this ability wasn't used or it splashed the kill won't count and no xp will be awarded whatsoever, but the drop will show.
That's pretty much the process. As I said before, you can use all mage abilities as long as you never select an offensive spell. I don't know why this works but it just does. Eventually ended up using Tsunami without it hitting for a bit of fun. :p No need to cast confuse or any other curse on the creature, simply casting Chain will agro the creature. This process should be applicable to boss monster that required recoiling before the EoC, however, now they should be much easier to recoil.
If for some reason you do hit you can leave the area to have your target cleared, and the hp of the creature will be fully restored, though I haven't recoiled a creature to death that I had previously done damage to. I'm assuming that since the hp was reset so would the damage you had done to it.
If anyone needs something clarified please, do ask.
