Not exactly a security warning more of a Microsoft Warning for Windows 8 peeps.

Having been at home most of the week ill and bored I finally relented to the constant reminders for me to upgrade my new windows 8 laptop to windows 8.1. The download seemed successful enough and most of the installation until it was almost complete then the laptop suddenly rebooted and went into a loop of trying to find the O/S. Many hours later after quite a few wrong number for the maker's tech support I finally got wind of how to reset the laptop to the factory settings. All data lost.

Sooooooo.. just to remind everyone make sure you do a backup of your data before installing any major updates from Microshaft. Something I have never failed to do before so I'm blaming being bored and ill. =)

I am guessing the problem I had was with one of the drivers causing a problem as it seemed to be causing some confusion in the installation. I guess you were lucky Ryan or me and Biteem were unlucky but I suggest for future reference not to take the risk and backup your data first. Does no harm and can save disappointment.

To OP, you might look into Ghostry for script and ad blocking. Its a free browser plugin, and even automatically updates itself for new scripts and ads. You can allow certain pages for good and or one time allows if it blocks something you really want to view. (for instance it blocks soundcloud on any page except soundcloud. I just hit allow once, and let it play when I want it to.)

Do your homework, and recommend if you see fit. Hide my post if you deem it unworthy.

I know it has made a huge impact on my security, I wont go another computer without it.

AoDude - I actually use Ghostery myself, as well as things like BetterPrivacy and LightBeam, but I am very wary of Ghostery's ties to the advertising industry. (The company that owns it, Evidon, provides anonymised reports to advertisers so that they can find better ways to AVOID being blocked, for example...)

Benja 12345 - This thread was sticky for a while, but there are an awful lot of other stickies, so it got unstuck. If you see what I mean.

Finance - yes, that's on the update list. I'm hoping for a few more suggestions before I get on with the edit! ;)
