* Make sure you have a proper antivirus and firewall; learn how to use them, and update them regularly. If possible, choose an antivirus that includes link checkers for popular search engines (e.g. AVG or McAfee).

Just because I think my experiece with McAfee is worth mentioning for the safety of players, I'll leave my opinion on it.

Several years ago, my Uncle gave our family his computer that was a few years old, and was irritatingly slow. Surprise surprise, it had McAfee.

Every time the computer would be started up, McAfee would automatically open asking us if we wanted to switch to the paying version. McAfee would randomly open up in the middle of something, lagging out everything else (sometimes causing the whole computer to crash) just to say that there was high performance usage.

After 2 months of this, we tried uninstalling it. Tried to , it's uninstaller was faulty! It took us several months just to get the thing off the computer.

All-in-all, we hated McAfee, and I think people are better off using Web of Trust (WoT) or Norton Security than McAfee for finding safe search results. Besides, 2 years ago I saw an ad-bot in Lumbridge spamming to to buy McAfee O_o

A lot of antiviruses including Norton and McAfee can only be completely removed by using the ''removal tool'' uninstaller on Safe Mode or by reformatting the computer. ;)

It's common for people that once had antiviruses like that to experience problems if they used the Control Panel to ''uninstall'' it because traces will remain and may conflict with other software.

I also disabled Windows Defender on my computer because I noticed it was conflicting with my Kaspersky Internet Security. So it's a good idea to keep in mind that more than 1 antivirus or antispyware software may cause problems. But there are some exceptions like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which doesn't scan real-time unless you buy it and setup that option which I wouldn't. :P

I think we actually tried Safe Mode at one point, lol....

In the end, I think IObit Uninstaller removed it.

Preventative measures
----------------------

To help protect yourself, you can do the following:

* Install a script blocker on your browser, and learn how to use it (NoScript for Firefox/Mozilla is a good example). This will protect you against many dangers and exploits if used properly.

Hey very good thread!! I do have a question about this script blocker though, i have everything else on here under lockdown apart from this script blocker? please can you explain to me what it is and what does it do? sorry if it's been answered already! Thank you and have a nice day! :D

Clanmember got hacked for 1.4b + pop sets around 2 weeks ago, and he told us he just played on swiftkit like any other day.

He contacted a Jmod and they said that there was some sort of hidden advert or w.e on swiftkit which installed a virus or phish on his account without him knowing.

Not sure if swiftkits been covered but it'd be best to not use it :p

Calixte 247:

Hi there! A script blocker is basically an add-on for your browser that prevents websites from automatically running scripts when you open the page. Scripts can be dangerous not only because they can't be stopped without a blocker, but also because they can be invisible, so you may not even realise that one is running! Typically, they are written using javascript.

Although many scripts are benign (e.g. they bring photos to a webpage from another server), some are not (e.g. they install malware on your computer!). A good script blocker like NoScript will let you allow the scripts you *want* to have running on a particular site or page, while stopping everything else.

Hope that helps! :)

Not K Kin:

Yes, there have sadly been many, many cases of people who have lost control of their characters because they used an infected version of SwiftKit. That is precisely the reason for page 1, post 3 saying...
"* Don't download RS-related software (clients, bots), many are laced with malware."

I'm currently using a Mac, and I've read pretty much everywhere anti-virus software isn't needed for it due to how closed it is, is there any truth in this? :P

Also, this is a snippet of information from an older guide I wrote, *several* people are unaware of this, but it's very important to account security after an email hack.

"*IF* you ever come to a dreadful day when you are hacked, there are some very important settings you need to check! The hacker could have changed some settings which could be very damaging, and you might not even know they are in place! Please note, I am again using Google Mail as the primary example, other services will vary on names and the location.

Settings > General:
> Signature - Make sure your signature doesn't have advertisements or links in them!
> Vacation responder - Make sure this isn't giving malicious information, and is "Off".

Settings > Accounts and Import
> Other Google Account Settings - Make sure all e-mails there belong to you, and the hacker didn't place one of theirs! Also check the primary e-mail.
> Send mail as - Make sure it's sending mail as your address.
> Grant access to your account - This is very important to check, if the hacker added their e-mail they will still be able to send messages and read your mail!

Settings > Forwarding & POP/IMAP
> Forwarding - Make sure there is no address other than your own here, if it's set to the hacker's address all e-mails will be automatically forwarded to them without your consent/knowing."

Apples are just as closed as Windows Vista, The reason why it was secure was because it wasn't mainstream enough.

Remember, a computer is as save as you are. Once you run into a nice Java/Flash Exploit and/or run an application that is compromised you are pretty much... Screwed :P Regardless of platform :P

There will always be Zero Day Exploits

I have been thinking about passwords, the issue of them is that they are always too easy to hack(Even with all the variations you can make up...)

So I decided to make a small algorithm that I wanted to share to help others to make their passwords a bit more secure :)

First3-FqdnShortName(ggl, ms, hg, rug,bol etc.)-PWD-CharacerCountOfFirstWordInDomainName-important LvL key(See below)

Importance Level Importance Algorythm(insert in password)
0 FeelFreeToHack ReplaceWholePasswordWithEasyPassword
1 non-important: N/A Replace with "1"
2 Care About(Games, etc) 2-<Censor>
3 Bank, BEH, Mod, Work 3-<Censor>
