I very much liked the "think, take advice, think again" thing. I use this myself. Just make sure the advice is coming from multiple sources and not just from one source who has their own agenda.

Be prepared to be a confidant. Be prepared at times to make an unpopular decision.

Don't get caught in the trap of "we cannot do without these people", even if their presence in the clan chat is causing disruption.
