Not to me, no. I can see the humour in "offensive" names, and most of the people I met with those names were really nice and funny and brought a good atmosphere with them. Sure there are people with offensive names who aren't nice, but there are also people with regular names who aren't nice. In the end I judge their behaviour, not their name or taste of humour. I also expect my own members to be mature enough to not get offended over such little things on the internet.
We have a clan deputy who has what's arguably an offensive name, however he did not have this name when he joined.
If I see an extremely offensive name, then I report it. If I see a moderately offensive name, I'll be wary of them. If they do join our clan or start guesting, I keep a very close eye on them while also trying to get to know them.

This is a definition of 'maturity' different from the one I use, and evidently the one some other leaders use too. *I* expect my members to be mature enough not to use names - or language of any sort - that could reasonably be assumed to be likely to be found obnoxious or offensive by other people in the chat.
This reminds me of the argument that it should be permissible to use certain language in-game or in the forums because "most players are adults" or "kids these days hear and use this language all the time."
This leaves out the fact that for a certain group of people it's *because* they're adults that they find certain language unacceptable, not to mention the different cultures and methods of upbringing that different players have.
How do you know, for example, that your grandmother doesn't play RS? I know grandparents who do. Is it right to tell people from more conservative eras, countries or cultures that what distresses them is something they just have to stop being so immature over?

I don't do much recruiting, but if I did I personally wouldn't choose anyone with an immature name, or something that could be considered offensive/inappropriate. Other than that, I'm fair game.
I prefer a mature clan with people who can have a laugh, even over some content that *some* may find offensive, but there has to be a limit, and if you can't resist making an immature name, then you probably wouldn't fit in.
Pretty much this.
Clan:
A long term clan member changed their name to "if*ckalot" or very similar. I asked them to leave the clan chat until the 28 days were up to change it back. They did. They changed their name later not sure if it was 28 days or if they got reported or whatever.
But i regularly make sure anyone recruitting knows that I dont appreciate names with swear words in it or very immature names.
The richest person is not who has the most. It is who Needs the least.
Yeah the name matters as it is part of the overall picture. It's not everything, but it's part of it.
I expect people to be reasonably mature and considerate towards others, with the name they choose. It's sometimes a tricky line, but that's why we set up our clan with several leaders, so we get a variety of opinions.
People know I don't like name changes at all, and so I did cop a bit of ribbing when giving someone a bond so he could change his inappropriate name asap.
My personal opinion (not my clan's opinion) is that allowing name changes is the worst update ever, and I've been playing over 15 years. The best update ever is the GE.
(Again, personal opinion.)

A fair number of my clannies agree with you, Princess Rae. They have a custom of addressing anyone whose name they don't recognise as "Bruce", and it's not exactly affectionate.
I mind less, because we have a rule that the very next thing a clan member should do after changing their name is to post in a thread that exists for that purpose. So I usually already know who it is who's now using this new name before I see them log in.
Doesn't stop other clannies from snarking though.
And as I commented above, if someone changes their name to something likely to be found offensive by others, they get short shrift.

Lol I sometimes make a joke when someone changes their name that they must hate me - I don't ask people not to change their name, but yes name changes do add to the workload.

I understand your vision as well. I don't believe people have some sort of right to not feel offended, it's just a feeling. People have to learn to deal with all their feelings, instead of trying to hide from the unpleasant ones.

They don't HAVE to read it. This is really a problem of egocentrical righteousness. What's acceptable is completely subjective. When you're going to the middle east and say God doesn't exist, you can end up in prison (or worse) for simply saying something that they find inconvenient to hear despite it most likely being true. Do you think that's right? Probably not, as most people in civilized countries believe that freedom of speech is a human right. It's of course limited by law so you're not allowed to discriminate or purposely offend a human or group of humans. But in most cases of "offensive names" that's not the case. They're merely inconvenient for some people to read.

My grandmother sadly passed away a year ago. If someone wants to be conservative it's their own choice and shouldn't affect what others can say.
