Scams happen all the time and we must always be on our toes to detect the next one. However a little official help would be nice occasionally.

A few months ago my Clan was targeted by the now really old scam of capital i versus l. A high profile veteran of the Clan was impersonated and many were asked for money. Fortunately nobody was taken in - the fake name was reported via the usual channels and I raised via raised a concern thread in here. That should have been the end of it surely - I would expect the fake name to never to be heard of again surely.

I log in today to find several asking in cc this same player why he needs the money. Yes the same false name is back and doing the rounds of Clanmates asking for money - we do our best to educate and keep our own safe but what is the point of taking the time to report these scum if nothing is done to remove them?

oh no Tigergal thats terrible.

Are you absolutely sure its the same name and not a different version of ?

We all put our trust in the report system and I would have hoped that since multiple clan mates reported it that something would have been done .

Sadly this is fairly typical of our experiences as well. Very little, if anything, seems to be done to protect clans from malicious actors (even when ingame reports are submitted.) Best you can do is let your clannies know whats happening and reinforce your clan's position on trust trades.

same happened with us - the person seemed to be banned but it must have been temporary, as they were back online a few days later. I agree it's very disappointing - if they don't get a ban for a proven scam, what does it actually take to get rid of these people

Yeah we had a "Meliania" or some such trying to hit up senior members and lower ranks in my clan, too. We immediately banned the name (BTW WHERE THE HELL IS OUR EXPANDED BAN-LIST OR CONTROLS, js..) and warned all clanmates about it. I never ask my clan for gp anyway, so they immediately thought something was amiss.

I always get more than a little peeved when reports we make on the Flag A Concern thread are never resolved. A long time ago there was an individual who had been trying to sexually harass our female clanmembers. When I reported it on FaC, I was told there was insufficient evidence to warrant any action to be taken (The hell?)

We ended up going to a private pay-for-service vigilante organization, and they resolved it. How they did so, I haven't a clue, but the individual still hasn't been punished by Jagex, and I know for a fact he continues to play (Although he did stop harassing us).

Anyway, I guess the best thing to do is to ban names created by imposters and keep your clanmembers informed about the issue, and very clearly state you'll never ask them for money.

Reporting in game for scamming is vital - sadly a massive proportion of those incidents raised in FaC or via email & Twitter have no such reports and make it impossible to track down the necessary evidence for action.

Player Support are aware of the current fad of scamming using name variants and are watching accordingly.

I had someone in my clan impersonate a clan member. They pm'ed me, a high ranking person within the clan, asking for money. I ended up reporting them via the usual means, as well as telling my clan leader - and banning the person who was guesting the chat at the time (we're pretty sure it was the same person who was logged into the scam account).

No idea what happened to them, but it was genuinely difficult to spot the difference between the scammers name, and the clan mate's name. I think a great way around this would be to alter the font - as Jagex once did, however that would probably upset a lot of people (again) and just end up as more of a mess than how it currently stands.

For now, we all just have to remain vigilant in our war against scammers, and notify everyone if anything crops up.

From what I have noticed when it happens in my Clan, there will be a f2p account that joins the clan as a guest then a few minutes later pm's those from the fake account who have it set to on. To solve this I look to see if a guest is f2p if they join, if the are f2p I kick asap and mention the scam and to ignore anyone who pm's asking for Gp.

While that won't work for a lot of clans it works for mine at the moment. It would be nice if we could get that feature to block f2p guests joining. It would solve the issues/make it harder for the scammer. Least then they would have to risk there main joining the clan to see who is on or waste Gp buying a bond for the scamming alt.

No we do not all put our trust into the report system and i can tell you right now that bans struggle to occur for numerous offences despite how many times we are told "just report them" by Jagex staff.

Coupling with the fact the punishments themselves are insufficient to deter such behaviour, its to look like Jagex are doing something without actually losing the customer "the person who is scamming"

As for this specific issue you cant really ban people for just asking for money.
