And don't get me started on Special Relativistic effects of firing a slug unless your using FTL tech for firing at a velocity FTL.

The opening ceremony began with the Parade of Nations in Anchorage's recently renovated Olympiad Soccer Stadium, seating over 85,000 people. In the Olympic Park, Arrentinian Jets over flew the stadium streaking colors of the flag or the PRC and Arrentine. The ceremonies started with a holographic presentation of the beginnings of Arrentine's history. As the holographic presentation continues, actors and dancers act out various events that were important to the nation history. As the ceremony progresses, it shows the dark time in Arrentine's history as the nation was plunged into war and suffered its centuries long dark age. It then shows the rise of Sithlord Man, President of the nation during its industrialization an Unity Movement on Arrentine. After some time, it the actors show the first steps of Arrentinians on Earth in Mongolia, and soon the establishment of Arrentine. Leading through the time (CYOC 4-Present) shows the dire times Arrentine has been through, along with the merger with Porschestan and the establishment of the UCN and People's Caspian Republic.

As the presentation ends, a firebender from Arrentine Major, holding the Olympic Flame, augments it around it to appear, and begins his jog to the caldron. Firing the flame into the caldron, President Sithlord Man II presides over the crowd and declares the Olympic Games open.

"Now firing an object that is essentially neutron star material is impossible, as you would have gravity being generated from a massive object (It would bend space-time, causing gravity to occur. It would be impossible to generate anti-gravitational effects with material that mass around.)"

Is it impossible because of the energy requirements of making the anti-gravitational effects, or because of something else?

"And don't get me started on Special Relativistic effects of firing a slug unless you're using FTL tech for firing at a velocity FTL."

Which then leads us to actually accelerating something to FTL and it all falls apart even more .

Also, can I get you started on the Special Relativistic effects? They sound interesting, and I like knowing things =P

Its because the object creates in own gravitational force. Using the gravitational constant 6.672x10^-11, you can find the gravity of any object. If you have a large shell made with neutron star material, you're potentially dealing with an object that has a small gravity field.

Since you ask about relativistic effects, I'll explain.

First, if you fire an object at ANY fraction of the speed of like (1%-90%) and you start getting into time dilation, length contraction, and mass increase. Whenever an object approaches the speed of light, length of the object will begin to contract and and the effects of time begin to slow. Essentially, a meter stick being fired at 85% the speed of light will contract the meter stick to half of its length.

This is where Einsteins E=m*c^2 formula comes into play. Essentially objects traveling at the speed of light (c) that have mass (m) have massive amounts of energy. The same can be reversed, saying E/c^2 = m will give you mass of the object from its energy if traveling at the speed of light. By interchanging the equation, you can obtain mass from energy, and lose mass and obtain energy. Those are the common laws of Physics (Conservation of Mass and Energy).

Essentially, an object traveling at the speed of light will become more and more massive. Objects don't want to do that and will never obtain the speed of light (only up to 99%).

You'll want a Modern Physics book for more details.

I was aware it had its own gravity field - I was more wondering why that made it impossible to fire if you could generate anti-gravity effects (this is assuming the existence of gravitons and the ability to manipulate gravity as a field, of course).

Would it still be impossible then for a different reason, or would it just come down to the energy costs requires to continuously counteract the gravity field of the slug?

However, I did forget that continuously accelerating it (well, I say forgot, I mean I didn't pay attention to the equations and probably should have) would increase its mass, though I did, of course, know that objects will never, in reality, be able to obtain the speed of light (unless they're already travelling at it, ala photons and tachyons, though the former don't have mass, as far as I can remember, and if the latter even exists, I believe their mass is supposed to be imaginary).

That said, the continuous-acceleration weapon I was discussing assumes that the projectile is already travelling at FTL and is being accelerated from that point onward (since for anything FTL in this game, we basically ignore the how of getting to FTL), i.e. from x c to y c where y > x .

I'm assuming other effects come into play in that case, of course.

That. You essentially need infinite energy generation to fire the slug, and a Zero-G environment, along with enough energy in the first place to move the object (K=1/2*m*v^2, play with the equation using algebra and such) would be the energy of an object at some velocity. The required energy would just be potential energy added on to kinetic energy to get total mechanical energy (in an ideal environment, ie, no outside forces).

If its fired at FTL, I can't tell you want would happen but using K=1/2mv^2, you can find out the energy released upon impact (where v is FTL speeds, or >3x10^8 m/s).

Luckily, thanks to the fact we have the implied ability to accelerate smaller objects to FTL, we therefore already have infinite energy generation, which means the slug can be accelerated to FTL just as 'easily' as anything else.

Of course, said infinite energy generation can't be applied anywhere else other than accelerating objects to FTL (at least, that's how I see the 'rule' in-game, since if everyone had access to infinite energy all the time for anything, warfare and so on would be meaningless. As would most things, really), but given that's exactly what we're discussing doing, I figure it applies here, too.

I will be kind of inactive for awhile, I have lots of assignments now that I am doing prelim (Oh I can't wait for the HSC...) so I can't let myself procrastinate (though yay! Tanicia won its first Olympic medal!).

Meh... I now feel justified in using a simpler semi-fictitious (Theoretically possible... So I consider it only partly fictitious.) alloy for my shells... All this math is making my head hurt having just got off work...

But, what about using Dark Matter to generate the anti-gravity needed to force the shell to the appropriate speeds?

Er, what?

Dark matter doesn't have anything to do with anti-gravity.

In fact, the gravitational effects dark matter has on the space around it is how we theorized its existence in the first place.

That's actually the second time you've mentioned dark matter and anti-gravity, and I remember raising an eyebrow the first time around. Where do you get that from?

Original message details are unavailable.
The thing is, of course, once you create FTL technology, (thereby giving you a method of creating beyond-infinite energy if you really want to, amongst other things), physical possibility is thrown out of the window. Which we all know and don't particular bother with anymore.

Right.

But we couldn't resist of course!

Ok since I'm pretty much the certified Astrophysicist on this thread I'll clear some things up.

You never fail to impress.

Belozay celebrates their medal winnings.
