The City

Daralt was founded fifty years ago, and has a population of approximately twenty-five thousand people. It is surrounded by a stone wall, which was wisely built with room to grow, which means that there is an open field around the city's edge. There are a few districts and key locations in the area.

The Market

Located in the center of the city, Daralt's market is surrounded by shops, and the marketsquare itself is filled with stalls selling various goods - some from the natives of Maphis, some from the Sorusian Empire, and some that are locally made. In the very center of the market are two statues standing side by side - Emperor Darius I, founder of the Empire, and Emperor Cidius II, the one who ordered the colonization of Maphis.

In the market district you can also find the city's three most popular inns. The Sleeping Goblin is the cheapest establishment, but is much more rowdy - every couple of weeks a barfight breaks out. They have a small arena where every Friday night they hold a fighting tournament of sorts. The participants are stripped down to their undergarments, bets are made, and then they beat the hell out of each other - no magic. The Mercenary's Pub is the next establishment, and while anyone is technically allowed there it is mostly a meeting ground for mercenaries and employers. The last one is The Dancing Dragon , which is of higher quality and price, frequented by the city's wealthier citizens. But if you can afford it, the food and ale are great and the beds are extremely comfortable.

The Slums

Located on the southwestern quarter of the city, the slums are where the city's poor live. Although many of the buildings are new enough that they don't quite look run down, it is not a great place to live. Crime rate is high - gangs control territory and deal out the addictive Fareroot Elixir, guard patrols are lower here than they are in the other areas of the city, and if you walk

down the streets at night you are likely to be robbed. Fortunately, criminals will usually leave you alone if you are unarmed. Still, you should probably avoid this area if you don't have business in it.

The Middle District

Located in the northwest corner of the city, his area is mostly home to the middle class or those with stable, decent-paying careers. Not as fancy as the Rich District or as run-down as the Slums, it is a decent place to live in. While the drug trade does spill into the Middle District, is not as bad and the guards maintain a tighter hold of the area. But being robbed at night is still a possibility.

The Rich District

Where the city's wealthier residents reside - nobles, merchants, businessmen, land-owners. This is one of the more heavily guarded areas, with richly appointed houses and mansions, and plenty of lovely waterfront properties. Those dressed like they don't belong are often regarded with suspicion by the guards and shunned by the local residents.

The Docks

Located on the southeast side of the city, the docks are the first thing a person sees when they arrive in Daralt by sea. The entire area smells like fish. Three military ships are permanently stationed there, and there are also cannons on land ready to fire on invaders. The area surrounding the docks is mostly warehouses and fisheries.

Custom officials inspect cargo in search of the highly illegal and addictive Fare*root, forcing smugglers to find creative ways to either hide it or resort to outright bribery, the latter of which has a 50-50 chance of working.

Important Locations

The Job Board
Located in front of The Mercenary's Pub , the Job Board is a godsend for both mercenaries and those in need of aid. Simply get a piece of parchment, write a brief summary of your problem, the reward, and a time and place for them to meet you (usually inside the pub itself) to discuss further details. Then all you have to do is wait and hope someone actually shows up. Head back to the first page to see what is actually on the job board.

The Magic Academy
Located in the Middle District, the Mage School is a facility where young mages are moved to when they first discover their powers, where they will spend most of their teenage years learning and studying magic, how to read and write, mathematics, and science - an education many would not get if they didn't have magic at all. They also have an extensive library full of books and tomes, which any visiting Mages are allowed to make use of if they seek more information about a particular spell or field of study.

Fort Daralt
Commonly referred to as 'The Fort', Fort Daralt was first established by the Sorusian Army as a garrison their soldiers could reside in while they purged the local area of goblins (rip in peace goblins.) Located on the northern side of the city, between the Middle and Rich Districts, it is now where Governor Gareth Arenar and the one-thousand-strong City Guard reside.

Daralt Cathedral
One of the nicest buildings in the city, Daralt Cathedral is located in the Rich District. Three stories tall, built with smooth stone bricks and stain glass windows, it where many of the city's clergy members, including the twenty Paladins stationed within Daralt, reside. People often come here to give donations or pray. It has a shrine to every god.

New Sorus

'New Sorus' (that is the name of the island) has a shape similar to Japan in real the real world. It has a temperate climate, with lush forests and rolling hills. The south in particular is packed with mountains, rich in minerals like coal, iron, and silver.

Daralt is located on the eastern coast, and the surrounding woods have been cleared away for farmland, some of which is owned by nobles and some by commoners, although the nobles are slowly but surely buying the land from them.

The rest of the island is dotted with towns and villages, that usually specialize in either milling, mining, or farming. There are also a few ancient ruins here and there - nobody knows where they come from, although they are filled with traps and magical constructs, and often have valuable items at the end.

Before the Empire's arrival, the island used to be populated by goblins who lived in tribes and were quite disorganized. The Empire crushed them with relative ease, although a few small tribes still remain, attacking travelers and evading Sorusian soldiers.

Technology

The Sorusians are currently nearing the end of the medieval age. Black powder is a recent invention, and the military on mainland Sorus has already gotten rid of the crossbow and longbow.

But the colony of New Sorus has been a bit slow on the update. Although Daralt has some cannons and many of its guardsmen are starting to carry pistols, most people still rely on conventional medieval weaponry. Due to the scarcity of gunsmiths and ammunition, guns and bullets are also quite expensive.

As for the other races of Maphis... they are far behind. The Dark Elves have only recently invented the crossbow, the Sand Elves have only recently discovered steel, the Wood Elves are nomadic, and the Orcs are still using iron.

Currency

For currency, the Sorusians use coins of various metals, each representing a different value, all of which have the face of Emperor Darius I stamped onto them. The values are as follows:

1 Copper - 1 Sorune.
1 Bronze - 10 Sorunes.
1 Silver - 100 Sorunes.
1 Gold - 1000 Sorunes.

1 Silver per day is considered to be a decent wage for an unskilled laborer.

A gold coin is slightly smaller than a human palm. A copper is about the size of an ordinary penny.

Religions

The Sorusian Pantheon

The Sorusians worship the following gods:

Yoralf: Also known as the Creator. He created the planet and all life on it, and then had five children who he left to watch over it. When he returned to find that his children had divided the mortals with their differing philosophies, he banished them and went to sleep.

Toralf: Firstborn of Yoralf. The God of Order, Stability, and Peace. He decrees that people must adhere to tradition, be fair and just in their judgements, remain loyal to the state, and is said to have created the first code of laws.

Zeolf: The God of Wisdom, Knowledge, and Magic. He urges his followers to forever try to unravel the secrets of the universe, question their surroundings, and always work on expanding their knowledge and magical abilities - but never succumb to blood magic.

Neolf: Yoralf's youngest child. The God of Freedom, Parties, and Relaxation. He decrees that people should enjoy life to the fullest, but not selfishly. But despite that, his followers are often seen as irresponsible or lazy.

Mora: The Goddess of War, Honor, Strength, and Courage. Never use deception, always face your opponent on fair and even terms, always look to improve your physical strength, and do not back down from a difficult situation. The Order of Paladins dedicated to purging the land of all undead, demons, and dark magic wielders - in her name.

Klora: The Goddess of Love, Beauty, Compassion, and Social Interactions. She urges her follows to always be kind to others and always seek out a diplomatic solution to problems.

Renora: The Goddess of Death. Also known as The Destroyer. She was the wife of Yoralf, who helped him create the world. But when her children divided the mortals who lived in it, she too was heartbroken.

But she had also realized that banishing her children would solve nothing. The mortals would still continue to fight, if not for the gods then for something else. So, she decided to destroy it all and start again. Yoralf, wishing to preserve his own creation, banished her as well.

It is said that a war currently rages in the heavens - Yoralf's children against Renora, trying to hold her off until their father wakes up. Every time a wicked person dies, Renora takes their soul and absorbs it, strengthening herself. But if the person who dies was good - truly good - she sends their soul to her new world. Either Renora will eventually become powerful enough to defeat her children, break through the barrier, and destroy the world, or Yoralf will finally wake up and defeat her once and for all.

The Dwarves

The Dwarves believe in one god, and one god only - the All-Maker. It is said that he created the world on an anvil, and modeled its various species and creatures out of clay, which he then turned to flesh and blood, giving them life. This is why the art is smithing is respected in Dwarven society.

The religion encourages Dwarves to go through life with a strong sense of honor and loyalty, to remain true to themselves and always do what they think is right. Dwarves who adhere to these principles will go to the All-Maker's heaven - an eternal party and feast. Those who could be classified as morally grey will be re-incarnated to try again. Dwarves who fail these teachings completely will have their soul destroyed, and shall never exist again.

Wood Elves

The Wood Elves believe that the world was created by a diety known only as The Creator, and he has entrusted all mortal races with the duty of protecting and preserving the balance of nature. When an elf dies, their body is burned to release the spirit, which then watches over and guides their descendants,

bringing them good fortune.

Sand Elves

The Sand Elf Religion is almost identical to the Wood Elf Religion, only instead of protecting and preserving nature, it is more about honor and family duty.

Dark Elves

The Dark Elves are athiests.

Orcs

The Orcs follow the teachings of their god Rorak, who decrees that the weak will die out and the strong will inherit all. To this end, Orcs often fight amongst each other. If you die a coward, you are a disgrace and your soul is destroyed. If you die in combat, then you are considered brave, but your body not truly fit for the world, and you are re-incarnated to try again. If you manage to lead a life of combat and die of old age, then you are deemed fit to enter Rorak's heaven - a peaceful land where you may finally lay down your weapon and relax.
