The funny thing is, you picked a time within th 30 minutes I have for lunch, during which I always check stuff on my phone (**** typing on it, btw. This is really irritating).
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.
Interesting you should pick dragons, seeing as how they always seem to herald the end times. Or are exceedingly scary booksmart monsters who keep orphaned children as morality pets. Pick your flavour of "our dragons are different".

Chinese and Japanese dragons have always been seen as intelligent, and Paarthunax more or less adopted the greybeard's (who basically fit the theme of morality pets given his past oppressive relationships with humans).
You could always go down the Guildwars route. "Your gods have abandoned you and your demons are dead, so now we must reap and zombify all sentient races now that we know the mortals are sufficiently advanced to fight us on our terms. Only then can we eat all the magic in the world to keep nature in balance for the next cycle".
Come to think about it, those dragons might be Reapers from Mass Effect.

HTTYD took western themes if I recall, making their Dragons little more than (cute and misunderstood) monsters of calamity. Hardly the kind of creatures one would expect to roar defiance at gods and/or end the world in a sea of flames.
But.
I will admit those dragons were cute. And I may or may not want one.
Anyway, it's just a starting point, and I've deliberately left it vague. We don't even know if it's a dragon, all I've said is it has colossal scales and is sleeping. And it's in something similar to a cave.
