Well, you're allying with a bunch of barbarians who have the largest standing army and only have political power because everyone else is afraid of them. You should have been uniting all the other houses against them.

You know what I found really interesting though?

The fact that these extremely powerful families have been fighting each other for a hundred years, and suddenly the heir appears...

Heir: U wanna team m8?
Darnich: Sure
Deltrith: Sure
(Queue old hag effectively eliminating both houses)

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country:
Jordyn: U wanna team m8?
Kraji: Sure.
Bjorna: Hey, can we get in on this?
Jordyn: Sure.

Three of the five houses had allied with each other, and the remaining two destroyed each other, all of which occurred in the span of a few weeks.

I really don't remember the specifics of that thread. I mean, I remember most of what happened involving my house. But hey, at least I was part of the three houses that didn't straight up get rek*. :P And allying with Kraji was smart in the sense that I would not have been attacked if they started warring - or at least, I wouldn't be the first one they attacked. PLUSSS: We all had our bonuses, in terms of houses. I was so rich I could have bought an army if I needed to defend my house from Kraji. :P
I just play FFXIV at this point. DC: Crystal

I think the problem was that too many people wanted to be special or unique, and came up with over the top ideas that really didn't fit in with the setting as it was first described.

Why can't we just have normal characters? Not everyone needs to be a magic wielding half elf, demon, angel, or demon/angel hybrid. Just keep it mostly regular folk who are exceptionally skilled in non-magical combat. We can maybe have a mage or two, and maybe one character who is secretly a demon or undead or something.

It can still be interesting if you actually work on your character's personality. And combat without magic can still be fun and engaging in it's own way.

You would have been attacked eventually once the other houses were no longer a problem. Also, as a rich city, you had to have been a huge player when it came to trade, and trade requires diplomacy. Allying with a warmonger house that everyone fears does not help your reputation.

You could have bought an army, sure, but you can't make said army magically appear. You would have to either pay another family to loan you their troops (they're all dead at this point so that's not an option), recruit mercenaries, or conscript a bunch of lowly untrained peasants and draining your coffers to outfit them with good gear.

House Kraji had rhinoes. Any long term 'alliance' would just be you paying them not to attack.

Hey! My character was decently skilled in swordfighting and possessed naught but the meekest amount of magic ability. Her skills lied in charisma and negotiation. Lady Kraji kept her place by being strongest and most respected, Lady Jordyn kept hers through trade negotiations. I mention those specifically because they were the houses run by women and thus the ones expected to fail.

EDIT: Even in those cases I would have probably reached the crown by the end, meaning I could effectively shut down Kraji (and if they rioted, I'd still die having been queen). So yeah. Doesn't matter anyway because it devolved into everyone wanting to be super special snowflakes. :P

I think it's more likely that you would have suffered an unfortunate accident during the crowning ceremony...

History and politics in a nutshell: Everyone looking back on and judging your decisions, their criticisms based almost entirely on hindsight. :P Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

So this is why you went on a spree of anti-magic threads?
