I'm basically taking this approach to roleplaying where I think to myself: "What if this was a real novel?"
And in a dark fantasy novel, no journey is ever had without death, so if a couple of my characters need to die to give it the depth it needs, then so be it (although hopefully it is on my terms.) I'm a fan of stories that feature casts of likeable characters who are slowly whittled down to a fraction of their original number (but not horror stories), and the few who left get a positive-but-bittersweet ending. I don't know what that says about me, but that is just the way I like stories to go.
That said, I am not giving Angel express permission to murder all my characters, since I do intend for some of them to make it through. But I don't just think of my characters as the heroes of their own personal stories, I also think of some of them as supporting/background characters in the grand scheme of things who can die.
So, take Cirion. He killed the antagonist of the previous thread, so it makes little sense for such an influential character to be inexplicably absent. Also, I found it odd how all this chaos in the east has yet to attract any actual good-aligned characters who want to stop the madness. All the heroes seem more concerned about watching big sweaty ogres fight or chasing vague rumors of hags than rushing to stop actual towns being destroyed by a literal army of darkness, so I decided to be different and add a bit more complexity to the story (and also give Angel more work, mwahahahahaha.)
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.
