It takes place in a world that's just a step or two below our modern world. The new technology - named crystallis tech due to it using special crystalline material to power everything - already caused a first war and now the continent is in a stand-off because nobody wants to instigate mass destruction (or what a lot of people believe would lead to that). It's a time of peace, but uneasy peace.

EDIT: Oh, right, forgot about the landmass. It's a single large continent with several nations on it, each varying in size and tech advancement. You'd be starting, and probably spending most of your time in, one of the smaller ones that's also at the head of technological advancement.

As for plot, all that's really important now is that you start on a passenger airship that's going to get hijacked, and we go from there.

Player abilities are essentially open. There's magic, brought about by crystallis tech, guns, which are of the same base, or older-fashioned swords and whatnot. I've got a slightly more detailed explanation written up, but the basics of power variety is that you can either be able to do one or two things powerfully, or a lot of things in a much weaker sense. This applies to everything.
