Erik would rather fight to the death no matter what. The trailer for the Warlord alludes that he leads charges for his people to set an example, as if he doesn't, he's no leader at all.
The Warlord class in For Honor seems to be based on the huscarls, who did fight to the death if their leader was killed in battle. Those who served as bodyguards for Byzantine emperors also had the mindset to fight to the death.
If required self-mutilation is just cutting open one's hand, that doesn't seem troublesome.
Sakura does not value her own life, and as historic samurai, would accept fate and go to her death. Unlike in the Western mindset, Japanese view going to one's death as a positive thing, nothing to be afraid of. No nation fears death less than Japan's, hence numerous accounts even as late as World War 2 of regular Japanese soldiery and even citizenry commiting suicide or even mass suicide.
There is an emote Hitokiri does of which they cut open their own hand on their axe. So, Sakura wouldn't have a problem with that.
Like historic samurai, and what Westenev said, a samurai would commit seppuku as an act of honor if unable to complete a task, or commited a disgraceful act, or was unable to carry out one's lord's wishes, or requested to do so if one's loyalty was questioned.
Female samurai or even noblewomen also committed this.
Seppuku seems to be the more historic term, whereas harakiri comes in later centuries. The terms tend to be interchangeable, though seppuku seems to have been committed by tanto followed by a beheading delivered by someone else.
