Since your characters are figures from the distant past, I figured you'd like to hear about the Sudovian battle tradition called Privati Dvikova . It goes like this: When two enemies of even skill level meet up in a space that is too constrictive, or too populated by idiots, One or both warriors can request to carry out this tradition, although the other warrior has to accept the duel as well.
It's similar to the one-on-one honorable duel. The difference is that both parties can use whatever tools at their disposal to bring down their foe. When Privati Dvikova is announced by one party. By tradition, all idiots, except the two fighters leave the area, allowing ample space to move. Privati Dvikova can be fought as a duel of honor, a duel of blood, or a duel of superiority.
Duels of honor, are pretty straightforward: Someone has slighted somebody's honor and is challenged to a duel. They are never a duel to the death, but inadvertently, fighters have died in duels of honor centuries past.
Duels of blood, are the real deal. They used to be used as capital punishment in Sudovia. The gist is that someone has offended somebody so badly that a duel of honor wouldn't be sufficient. Duels of blood are always to the death.
Duels of Superiority are literally just duels to prove who is better at a certain activity, or in some cases, to settle who is the better mate for a disputed woman. They were typically done by Sudovian nobility to pass the time, or settle disputes. They were done with wooden weapons, not sharpened blades.
