I have a lot of trouble with games like Dead Rising or Dead Space – they did their job of pressuring the player’s endurance a little too well. Problem was that I could never really tell pauses from closet action sequences. Consequentially, playing the games quickly tired me out. (It doesn’t help that I refuse to play horror games during the day, and play on the frustratingly dark “recommended light”).

They kind of fixed this pacing issue in Dead Space 3, but the whole experience was just less intense. I guess it’s a case of being careful what you wish for.

It's no different than the forced laughter you hear durring sitcoms which tell you when it's okay to laugh.

Not really. Music doesn't tell you when it's okay to be afraid. It exists either to build up to the moment you are supposed to be afraid of, or to heighten the amount of fear you are already feeling.

I mean, I don’t disagree with your points Fishing, nor do I think they invalidate my own. There are plenty of ways to portray an idea depending on the context. I simply don't believe that running away from monsters with chase music in the background constitutes as true horror (at least, for me).

... well, I would have agreed up until the point I quoted. :P Have you listened to the tracks that were linked, and how did you feel after listening to them? What sort of narrative was the music trying to sell?

To me, it was a very sinister beat (especially the second one). The low gutteral bass definately gives a dangerous vibe - I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a scene with this sort of tune.

I think the only "recent" story I've seen that gave me lasting nightmares was Doki Doki Literature Club. I mean, I generally know horror stories are fiction, so they're hard for me to take seriously - but that one hit a little too close to home. O_o

That being said, I guess different people have different triggers.

Good points about horror, all. As for Dead Space 3, I personally found it underwhelming, however, the idea of exploring the past via messages left behind was rather isolating and lonely. I also liked how death is the only option in the end.

But yes, running away from a monster with tense music, in itself, isn’t horror. But, I just really liked the Dead By Daylight soundtrack. Makes me wanna kill things. I think it fits very well with an evil character. Or indeed, during a chase scene.

Yes, I just noticed XD

I haven’t encountered anything that was genuinely scary for a long time. The one time that did scare me was about two years ago, when I was stalked by a black bear I thought was a deer for the first half hour or so. I only say it jump across my path for half a second. That was pretty scary, so I went into my car and drove home XD Good thing my car was just a minute’s walk away upon me seeing the bear.
