I have a lot of trouble with games like Dead Rising or Dead Space – they did their job of pressuring the player’s endurance a little too well. Problem was that I could never really tell pauses from closet action sequences. Consequentially, playing the games quickly tired me out. (It doesn’t help that I refuse to play horror games during the day, and play on the frustratingly dark “recommended light”).
They kind of fixed this pacing issue in Dead Space 3, but the whole experience was just less intense. I guess it’s a case of being careful what you wish for.

It's no different than the forced laughter you hear durring sitcoms which tell you when it's okay to laugh.
Not really. Music doesn't tell you when it's okay to be afraid. It exists either to build up to the moment you are supposed to be afraid of, or to heighten the amount of fear you are already feeling.
I mean, I don’t disagree with your points Fishing, nor do I think they invalidate my own. There are plenty of ways to portray an idea depending on the context. I simply don't believe that running away from monsters with chase music in the background constitutes as true horror (at least, for me).
... well, I would have agreed up until the point I quoted. Have you listened to the tracks that were linked, and how did you feel after listening to them? What sort of narrative was the music trying to sell?
To me, it was a very sinister beat (especially the second one). The low gutteral bass definately gives a dangerous vibe - I wouldn't want to be anywhere near a scene with this sort of tune.
