Dragon Ball Z wasn’t bad, but Dragon Ball Kai (the shorter, more polished DBZ) helped shorten down the 3-episode stare downs and fillers the series was notorious for. I also feel the movies (BoG and R'F') and Dragon Ball Super was a good successors to the series (better than GT, which I also enjoyed), which are probably a contentious opinions among die-hard fans.

I've never seen Cowboy Bebop, FLCL or Big O - but I do notice they tend to be the animes people seem to remember as kids. I instead grew up on Naruto, Dragon Ball Z and Yugioh, though most anime (like Gundam Wing) were restricted to the 11pm-2am timeslot due to “excessive violence”. So I remember setting the alarm in the middle of the night so I could sneak a peak. I was at the age where I couldn’t understand what was going on, but the pictures were pretty.

I dunno, some people think you should grow out of Anime, but I prefer the medium when compared to live action productions like Hollywood Blockbusters, GoT or The Walking Dead. There are just things you can do in animation that would never work in real life - and often look really shit when you try. This doesn't only apply to comedic or slapstick either - I think animation can handle darker or more serious themes that I would never take seriously with real actors.

I think a good portion of the anime 'fandom' can get pretty cringy, as in a lot of the older guys who are still really into it and very vocal about it. Most of the time those guys are REALLY weird. However, I think they just give everybody else a bad name. Most people can watch it and enjoy it and not talk about it constantly. I'm not in the habit of demonizing certain activities. I have some hobbies and what-not that would appear stupid, boring or cringy to others as well. I can relate to the hardcore anime guys when it comes to that. Most people look at me like I'm crazy or the most boring person on Earth whenever I start to rattle on about history, entheogens or pharmacology.

Anyhow, you might be a tad bit younger than me or perhaps your parents actually cared what you watched. Big O, Inuyasha, FLCL and Cowboy Bebop were staples for me when I was younger. I remember being eight or nine years old and watching them religiously every night at 2, 3, 4AM on the original run of Adult Swim probably circa 2002-2004. Mostly I was able to do that because my parents didn't give a damn what I watched or how late I stayed up. If I stayed up until 4AM and was tired as hell for school in the morning, that was my problem. I had way too much free-reign and independence as a kid but I guess it paid off in some ways. I got a lot of my stupidity out of the way when I was younger and it didn't infect my teenaged years so badly. Likewise, from age 11 to 15 I was pretty much a latchkey kid. Homeschooled and I was alone at home 90% of the time and pretty much allowed to do whatever as long as I didn't hurt myself or others, burn the house down or break stuff.

I can definitely appreciate anime but it just doesn't really click for me anymore. Last anime I kinda liked was JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, I thought it was neat. Used to get drunk and watch it some nights. Video games have kinda gone the same way for me since I turned 20 or so. Every once in a while, but not very often.

Also, I find that most people who think anime people are cringy have their own cringy habits and oughtn't be so quick to judge. I mean, sure, I've met plenty of guys who won't shut the hell up about anime and it's their passion in life. Likewise, I've met plenty of annoying guys who won't shut the hell up about Game of Thrones, Magic the Gathering or Fortnite. All of those fandoms are equally annoying and cringy to me but hey, you like what you like. I don't judge them for it, I just get annoyed by them.

I just find it hilarious that these guys complain about the anime fans yet they'll go on and on and on about GoT, MTG or Fortnite when the other person in the conversation clearly doesn't care. Usually that other person is me.

Fortnite though is particularly annoying because it seems inescapable. You go on YouTube: Fortnite videos, Fortnite streams, Fortnite comments. You go on social media: people talking about Fortnite. Out in public, more people talking about Fortnite. Even my nephew, all he wants to talk about is Fortnite. Overall it's probably an okay game but I just wish people would play it and shut the hell up about it. Personally I wouldn't play it myself because I don't like multiplayer unless it's co-op and I don't like playing games with a bunch of gradeschoolers.

Y’know, I actually didn’t know about Fortnite until a 40 year old co-worker asked if I knew anything about computer games. A few weeks later, I babysat a pair of 9 year old kids who were aghast that I had never played. Then my Discord pal’s found out that I had never played, and now I can’t miss it. It’s on the news, it's on social media, it’s in the papers, and it’s the only game anyone seems willing to talk about irl.

So, yeah. As a fellow co-op casual, I feel your pain.

You're forgetting that is true of any game that really hits it off.

Overwatch. Destiny. Pokemon Go.

Even single player games aren't immune.

The popularity will hold until the next big thing comes around or until the developers do something stupid that nerfs or breaks gameplay and most of that community gets so pissed off they bail.

Streamers and Youtubers will continue to show videos/streams of it until the followings/views drop and monetization gets hurt.

Hm, I can't add much to this, but I never had problems with fandoms. But yes, as Gun said, people who complain about cringy things are often quite cringy themselves. Lack of self-awareness is common in humans, after all. I've also never played Fortnite, Overwatch, Desinty, or whatever else, I'm not into trendy things. I still play Nintendo 64 once in a while, but waiting for my S-Video adapter to come, then I can hook up my N64 to HDMI which will be amazing. Will be focusing on For Honor in the meantime, as I just joined the Wu Lin weekend open beta test, so maybe I'll be able to unlock some cools things or something later.

Sometimes, I feel a bit left out regarding anime, because it's supposed to be a nerdy thing, yet I don't focus on it. But, as I said a couple pages ago, Googling my username Azigarath somehow led me to a .gif of Angel's Egg, so I'll keep that 80s anime in mind for the future. Gotta at least try to fit in.

Why does Anime have to be a nerdy thing? It's just an alternate way to view media through the use of shapes, colour and sound.

I don't think watching Anime will have the effect you're looking for. Different anime will resonate better with different people - so unless you watch seasonal anime, the chances are that bringing up your favourite anime will invoke the "Bored Eyes Syndrome". I mean, a few of my friends are REALLY into guys sports anime like Kuroko no Basketball... though, frankly, I'm happy not to join that fandom.

This. The main reason I prefer anime over "real" tv shows is because the art just appeals to me more than the real people. It just feels like the types I want to watch feel like they fit better in that medium.
