"Sword Art Online" or "My Hero Acedamia" have solid english dubs, so they are good "gateway" animes. If you're looking for a good "first" anime, I'd try those.

I'd recommend MHA over SAO. Don't get me wrong, I actually really like SAO, and it was the first anime I actually watched so it's got some nostalgia for me. However, it does get a little...weird in parts, specifically the end of Fairy Dance. Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

To be fair, SAO isn't a gateway anime because it's the best one on the market - it's because it introduces A LOT of anime genre's in one sitting. This allows people to comfortably branch off into more niche anime based on the aspects they enjoyed - whether that be romance, action, waifu wars or lewd tenticle hentai.

You have to admit though, the moment Kirito kicked his ass in the parking lot was the most satisfying moment in anime.
