I never studied in any professional capacity and I've sold over a thousand copies of my published e-book. I suppose that's not the greatest of success but I think people either have it or they don't, as far as writing goes. You can teach some writing skills but I really don't think you can just teach anyone how to write. It won't necessarily make their writing any better.

Building up a fanbase via social media networks works, too, and indeed, some authors do pursue that. I was talking about traditional publication. Or, maybe traditional publishing has also changed, and I did not notice? My knowledge is like a decade old, after all.

Self-publication is definitely a quicker means. Congratulations on sales! Well done! I've been making stories for two decades and haven't made a single penny, literally. However, I do disagree about your point of writing skills. Training and education makes you better in whatever field you're in. Being educated and trained in professional writing will give you advantages, however, it does not grant you creativity or talent.

Hey gang,

Just dropping by for a quick visit and to put in my two cents.

I think the best thing a person can do to improve their own writing is to read the written works of others, and of course practice their own writing. In that sense you could call that the study of professional writing, but one certainly wouldn’t need to take specific lecture based courses on how to write. Like any other skill, writing is something that can be learned and developed over time. Some people have a natural creative talent and predisposition for words, that may grant them a leg up in the beginning, but it is the practice and continuing development that will win out in the end.

Annie, it is great to see you made your own thread! That’s very exciting!

Azi, I like your new thread, Wake Up. It is everything I would want in a dystopian sci-fi (had I the time I would play a self aware AI named Schell that ghosts between 3 separate bodies)!
