Y'know, I realise I so readily turned down Lasky's roleplay idea the other day... but then got to thinking. Refugees in a zombie apocolypse heading through towns to resupply as they fled? It actually sounded like an anime I'd seen before. So, after much soulsearching, I found it.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress!
Unrelated? Maybe, but perhaps this shows running away doesn't have to be
BORING and COWARDLY

Every single dedicated roleplaying website that I have ever seen always devolves into rampant elitism, autistic screeching, glorified weeb fanfics, and legbeards acting out their sexual fantasies.
Roleplayer Guild is pretty good, if you stay in the Advanced section. Though I have stumbled across some elitism here and there, and there were a few threads that were too crazy across the rules.
For instance, I tried to join a Skyrim RP. The GM was only accepting a certain amount of characters, so they created a deadline. I posted my bio early on, then I hung out in the OOC section, offering other users tips on Elder Scrolls lore and meme-ing around. This went on for about a week, and not once did the GM offer any feedback towards a person's bio.
Then the deadline comes around, and I'm rejected solely based on two reasons. None of them had anything to do with the quality of my writing. The first reason was the fact that I didn't include a personality section in the bio. I clearly stated that I would prefer not to include my character's personality.
The second was that they had one of those "post ____ in your bio to show that you've read rules" things (their rules were almost exactly the same as every other RP) and I forgot to do it.
They had a full week to address either of these things out didn't. I told them this, and they basically said: "Well, you're clearly incapable of understanding the importance of the personality section so I'm not going to RP with you."

That's been my only real negative experience, though. Other than that, it's been fine. Not as bad as
this
place used to be, certainly. Though the Casual and Free sections are filled with fanfics.
Though that advertisement posted by Sanni certainly doesn't encourage me to join.
