Well, to summarize what is happening with my roommate, basically he's trashing the apartment on the regular (leaving crumpled paper towels everywhere, clogging the shower drain, piling trash to be a foot taller than the can, etc.) and when my third roommate and I tried to tell him to clean up his mess he got huffy with us for not cleaning it either. Me and Amanda (the third roommate) feel uncomfortable even being in the apartment because it is such a mess and he tries to tell us to clean it. It's gotten to the point where I've half moved in with my boyfriend just out of a strong necessity to not be at the place I'm paying to live in. In addition, my male roommate fails to recognize anyone else's struggles and hardships, and invalidates those who choose to pursue a degree in things they enjoy if those things are anything other than engineering. Overall, a prick.

Amanda and I have tried to politely inform him of the various chores in the apartment that need to be done (AKA, shit like "take out the damn trash once in a while&quot ;) , but he says it's just as much our responsibility. When we tried to counter that by saying that both Amanda and I avoid being at the apartment because we don't feel comfortable there, he straight up walked away in the middle of our sentence and just left. Didn't say anything.

TL;DR: My roommate basically just assumes he's god's gift to this planet and is also oblivious to his white male privilege. And is also a slob.

Sounds like you are dealing with a psychopath, Maddy. I think you should move out permanently, because such a person is also often capable of terrible crime. If you must stay with him, be sure to keep a kitchen knife in your room at all times, just in case you must defend yourself.

TBH, it kind of sounds like he hasn’t had to clean for himself before (or doesn’t understand what a clean environment is, or the import of maintaining one). I’d like to think nobody likes to live like a slob intentionally… and pointing it out kind of just puts him on the defensive.

I think Annie does bring up a good point though; have you tried speaking to the landlord or landlady? It could be possible that they may be in breach of their tenancy.


EDIT: Not every unclean person is a psychopath, Azi. That's just intollerant. :P
