However, they don't sit in a corner, afraid of everything that's happening while their powers set the surrounding buildings on fire.

Not literally, anyways.

Nobody's going to idolize anyone that doesn't at least act confident and competent.

This actually reminds me of an episode of Darker than Black. A girl suddenly discovers she has out of control pyro powers, and people around her are set on fire during her outbursts. That being said, she got a bad ending at the end of the episode. She is kidnapped, her scientist father is killed in the exchange, and she is put into protective custody. This last point wouldn't have been overly terrible, if she had not come back at the end of the season as a brainwashed puppet without any lines.

But, yeah. I think the general perception is that girls who are scared of everything usually harden into psychopaths when faced with adversity. That being said, if they're cute, who cares if they're psycho?

EDIT: It doesn't really help that I'm kind of into the break the cutie trope, if it's done right.

Sounds like Annie's dream come true.

Stannis Baratheon from Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire fits in with the 'Break the Cutie' trope.

...okay, that's not true. He was never a 'cutie', he was always a bit of a cynical anti-social dick, but he is actually the most strongly principled character in the series and his story-arch is about him gradually abandoning those principles in order to reach his goal.

If you want characters with an actual 'Break the Cutie' arch on that show, though: basically anyone with the last name 'Stark.'

Lets hope not, since said character died a humanoid weapon (since superpowers makes one inhuman in this universe). That being said, if you work for a shadowy agency, I don't see how you could ever expect a character to be anything but cannon fodder.

… Unless, of course, you’re that universes eqivilant of Durzo Blint, where nobody in the underworld messes with you because the distant second who would replace you doesn't match your level of skill or abilities, and know you WILL kill them if they even think about trying something.
