Think of using shadow magic as solidifying shadows, then manipulating said solid shadows. You could lift and throws objects using the shadows, or grasp someone in a big shadow hand, shadow blades, etc. You can stealth with it too (to varying degrees of success) but it tends to be used to throw weight around by thugs who pledged themselves and got the luck of the draw - enough power to actually be scary to people.
