Well, everything is an option. Whether or not said option is warranted is entirely up for debate. But some options are a one time opportunity, and by the time you actually realize that's the one you should have taken it's too late.

The question is: do you have the credentials to order a strike? What's to stop the nearby Alliance vessel from sending their own investigation teams (or, worse, call for backup)?

EDIT: Are the UNSC and Alliance two separate entities? Is one dominant over the other? I seem to have forgotten. O_o

EDIT 2: Does the Alliance even carry the ordinance to destroy the Icarus Rising AND the science facility? Both seem to be infested with Necromorphs. More importantly, what if some bigwig (or unitologist) within the chain of command wanted to protect their find on the Research Station?

It is assumed that all Earth-based militaries are part of the same faction, one way or another. Different generals/admirals will have control of their according franchise's military forces.

Icarus Rising is the science facility. So far, the Systems Alliance just sent a recon team to the area we're at, alluding to the mission to Mars from Mass Effect 3. It is assumed that additional forces are combating Cerberus, the Collectors, and the Servants of Chaos at other parts of Mars.

I'll admit. I'm lost.

EDIT: So is it a case of different branches, same job? Like how a country could have an Army, Airforce and Navy... the Earth could have several different Navy's?

EDIT 2: I looked back to page 24, and everything makes a little more sense. It seems WE (namely, Shirley and Annie) are the alliance "shore team" I eluded to.
