I'd be the Queen, seeing as that's the best piece.

If you are attacked by a knife-wielder who knows what he is doing, it is almost a certainty you are going to get stabbed or cut regardless of what you do, unless you manage to flee or happen to wear armour. It does not take much skill or practice to kick someone in the groin, claw the eyes, grab the throat, or stomp on a knee, these are all very easy things to do. Unless the victim happens to be abnormally inept, which I consider unlikely, I cannot think of any easier ways to defend yourself if you are unable to avoid such a situation.

Ancient Greeks, medieval Europeans, and the warriors of India, all did these moves. Since real human beings have been utilizing moves similar or identical to my advice, on battlefields and streets of their era, for thousands of years, there's probably something useful about it. If there is anything better, I have not experienced it, and would like to study it if possible.

It is illegal to walk around with a weapon in public, generally; if you had a katana or tachi sheathed at your side, you'd probably get arrested, or even shot and killed by police. However, if you happen to have a katana or tachi sheathed by your side, and you see someone coming at you, yes, you could suddenly withdraw your blade while drawing it across your attacker. This was done historically in Japan. In Europe, there was a similar technique to iaido: you raise your sheath and stick it in your foe's face while unsheathing your sword, then you fight with your sword.

Different countries, different laws I guess - but if you carried and used an obvious weapon like a knife or a sword, this could be viewed as premeditated assault even if you were to only use it defensively.

Indeed, if you carry a weapon for self-defense, you intend to use it, so it can end up being premeditated assault. Improvised weapons can be used, such as solid steel bracelets which can suddenly be used as knuckle-dusters or narrow shields, a belt (using the buckle like a mini flail), or a rock in a sock (you keep a rock and a sock in your pocket; before the police come, throw the rock away).

Anyways, if anyone else has anything to add to self-defense against a knife, feel welcome to, especially if you think I am wrong in anything.

I'd feel sorry for any officer of the law who might have to pat down a walking sock drawer on the street.

Sad thing is, weirder things have probably happened.

EDIT: I've somewhat revamped the power system of my proposed thread - with power classifications being based on two factors.

1) The "rank" of the ability - or the class. At the moment, I'm using a chess set as my model, with the King being the team recruiter and leader, the queen as the ace of all stats, bishop as support, knights as your tactical combatants, Rooks as your frontline bulldozer and pawns as your less developed members or trainees.

A king would be able to see the potential rank of a candidate before recruitment, and would only be able to empower the pieces of a common chess board (ie. 1 queen, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 2 rooks, 14 pawns).

2) How the ability is fed/used. At the moment, I have three possibilities a character could consider:
a)
Magic, the ability to shape the world by denying how it presently works. Feeds off leylines, an invisible force that connects all living things.

b)
A Talent, or a physical manifestation of who you subconsciously want to be. Like a certain fireball toting 10 year old we all know and love.

c)
A Miracle, or the ability to contract with spirits, demons or gods and beseech them for abilities, information or eventualities. Different beings are stronger or weaker in different aspects.
