Interesting you should mention X-Men, I did suggest a superhero thread some time ago, though if I recall correctly, Inferi was not interested. I had suggested a superhero thread somewhat similar to Batman, Spawn, and Shadowman: a mix of cities, crime, corrupt cops, betrayal, and even demons and hell. The idea was we play as a character, who died/got betrayed/left to die, gets sent to hell as you were a prick your entire life, but you escape hell whilst acquiring superpowers, and must embark on vengeance before the demons find you.
I... think that's a little different - the psyche's of the characters would be drastically different from your average hero thread. Revenge, as a plot, is okay - but unless you have a cast of sociopaths and mary sues, you'd have to slowly build characters to have resistances to situations... otherwise you'll get a repeat of Koray, where everyone just spends the thread running away!
I'm talking about a thread where people mutate into power. Yes, it's uncommon (and not all that popular), but it happens - and you have to deal with it and learn to control your powers... or don't, and suffer the conciquences. This offers the chance to join any side of the moral compass by exploring your own characters beliefs, as well as their circumstance.
Just my two cents though.
EDIT: I suppose superpowers are just an analogy for tallents. We all have them, though some people are more skilled than others... but this doesn't nessicarily mean a person wants their gifts, or knows how to use them. While this can cross into dark themes, I don't feel it's as exciting if you begin from a dark theme from where a person has nothing to lose.
