Interesting you should mention X-Men, I did suggest a superhero thread some time ago, though if I recall correctly, Inferi was not interested. I had suggested a superhero thread somewhat similar to Batman, Spawn, and Shadowman: a mix of cities, crime, corrupt cops, betrayal, and even demons and hell. The idea was we play as a character, who died/got betrayed/left to die, gets sent to hell as you were a prick your entire life, but you escape hell whilst acquiring superpowers, and must embark on vengeance before the demons find you.

I... think that's a little different - the psyche's of the characters would be drastically different from your average hero thread. Revenge, as a plot, is okay - but unless you have a cast of sociopaths and mary sues, you'd have to slowly build characters to have resistances to situations... otherwise you'll get a repeat of Koray, where everyone just spends the thread running away!

I'm talking about a thread where people mutate into power. Yes, it's uncommon (and not all that popular), but it happens - and you have to deal with it and learn to control your powers... or don't, and suffer the conciquences. This offers the chance to join any side of the moral compass by exploring your own characters beliefs, as well as their circumstance.

Just my two cents though. :P

EDIT: I suppose superpowers are just an analogy for tallents. We all have them, though some people are more skilled than others... but this doesn't nessicarily mean a person wants their gifts, or knows how to use them. While this can cross into dark themes, I don't feel it's as exciting if you begin from a dark theme from where a person has nothing to lose.

I suppose, but there are other ways you could coin it. If the phenomonon were unexplainable and unavoidable, I suppose the logical conclusion would be either a witchhunt or a specially crafted facility (potentially private sector) that would specialise in tutoring and guiding the use of these powers. Such a facility would likely rake in money from corperate and government contracts, who would likely hire graduates into six figure jobs.

Personally, I think gifted labs are somewhat unethical in a modern world, and I'd rather avoid the whole "...Lets escape, just cause" plot.

Instead, think something along the lines of UA in My Hero Acedema, Hogwarts or Xavier's school. A place with the intent to "Exercise Control" as well as "Experiment".

My origional concept was something similar to Azi's FOG thread, whereby supowers exist because we (humans) blew on the trumpets of god, opening up special individuals (magi) to non-invasive posession. In keeping with the biblical story, with three of seven horns blown, a third of the world's drinkable water and greenery went kaput, and the seas became a toxic neigh impassable sludge of blood.

There would be three forces at play in this setting;

The Valkyries, ordinary people who are bestowed powers in order to complete their inevitable task of blowing the remaining horns and ending the Earth.

The Demons, who fight for nothing but greed. They posess humans and bestow their power and knowledge for sacrifice.

The Humans, who would likely be suffering or studying these pheonomena. While life does suck, their way of life has barely been touched in some areas.

EDIT: WAIT, Gerorge is back? :P

BORING. Cute, but boring. ;)

I was thinking something similar to a latent genetic template - if certain conditions are met, a person's body will begin rewriting itself to match this template. Depending on the person, ability or situation, the person in question could change before your eyes in a gulf of flame (of course, you'd better hope they have a medic or a regeneration factor for this method) - or through months or years of transition.

Of course, reincarnation, posession or other methods remain valid possibilities to consider.
