Siegward isn't a phantom though. He physically shows up and fights the boss alongside you.

I personally like kitting myself up in boss armor, mix and matching to include as much variety as possible. Kind of like trophies. On my next playthrough, I intend to use Wolnir's crown, one of the Pontiff's swords, Yhorm's greatshield, and Lorian's armor. Then go for the third secret ending, with my character kitted out in the gear of all these different leaders. Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.
