Corb, all your points are reasonable. The Grays have enough knowledge to make two-handed swords and polearms, but, as you alluded, chances are they wouldn't be of the same quality as modern homogenous steel! I kinda missed that point. I will have to pay a little more attention next time.
It's just that I didn't want the betas (whom just happened to be nearby for some reason) to be useless! I did make a few mistakes; I mention that an alpha died of old age, and there is a little bit of grappling going on, though.
Generally, only the older warrior Grays can fight to the death, and only with their chieftain or warlord; the ones at Tanik are just raiders, but considering their swords and light armour, probably are warriors, but their leader is just the equivalent of a captain. They are brave enough to challenge just about anything, but once half of the Grays are killed, the rest will leg it. They will then regroup and attack again but only if the time is right.
Grays can sprint faster than humans in open areas, and for longer periods of time, but since the Grays are not used to heavily forested environments, the Goeracks might be able to trample the Grays before they can get into a sprint, or throw boulders or logs at them. But it's your choice.
