They say there is a demon in that cave. He comes in periodically to posses spelunkers and force them to kill their friends, all the while cursed to forever seek the exit for eternity...

... I think there was a thriller based on that. O_o

EDIT: I was just reading Allen's ability, and had a thought- what if someone actually had the ability to duplicate themselves. Not like shadow clones, more like actually duplicating themselves, as in make real copies that shared the same experiences and feelings up until they were created.

Think about that for a moment - if you used such an ability, how would you ever know if you were the original?

I wonder if such a superpower has turned up before. O_o

I've known a few movies that had that.
7th day? starring Arnold Schwarzenegger comes to mind (an evil guy cloned him, then there were now 2 Arnies to kick bad guy butt. They also made clones of other people, their last memories were whatever they were when they were copied. So it was possible to have a business leader or congressman that you just assassinated irl then wake up thinking that they just woke up from the procedure.)
you also ad Michael Keaton in Multiplicity. slightly different approach, but again using technology.

I know these weren't quite what you were looking for.

Sometimes the point of conflict is that the clone may not realize they were the clone ... unless that was the point of the power (copy yourself so that if you did die, you would still technically go on). Sometimes in a power like that, the clones are somewhat aware of who the original was.

I'm sure you would remember meeting the version who created you.

I'm assuming that your duplicates also have the ability to duplicate themselves?

If so you would eventually multiply and form an army large enough to conquer the world.

Seriously, no army can match you if you can just make clones faster than they can be gunned down.

Heroes had that!
There was a side story where that semi-immortal regenerative guy (blonde hair) fought in the American Revolutionary War. He came across a guy in the British Army who had the power to duplicate himself, and his copies could too.
you had a char that could constantly regen vs an eternal army ... I'm not sure who won ... but the generative guy did show up in Season 2 of Heroes, while the cloner did not ...

There couldn't have been a winner. If the duplicator was smart, then he would have left some copies in another country to continue carrying out his legacy/agenda.

Unless killing the main one also kills all other copies. In which case it would be smarter to simply stay in one place and send clones out to do your bidding, instead of directly fighting.

Of course, if you're trying to take over the world, you clearly have a thirst for power, and if your clones are exactly like you then they too will carry that desire to be at the top, so the movement will collapse on itself when some of them try to betray you and take your position, or go free and do their own thing. Especially because any one of them can kill you and take your place. The backstabbing and replacing will occur non-stop. Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

I actually considered making this the ability. However, in my opinion the side effect would almost certainly be insanity in the created beings. Think about it. If you create things that are definitely going to vanish, and you know that you can do that, there would always be that seed of doubt in someone's head that they weren't the real one, which would lead to the knowledge that you are entirely fated to die.

A clone knowing that would probably end up killing at least the original, and possibly others, just because of how unfair its own existence is. You wouldn't be able to make it do anything that you wanted, and it would render the ability 100% harmful to yourself.
Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

Well, considering they're you (for the moment), they will share your ambitions and goals - and aren't likely to self terminate/teamkill (because there was a need to replicate). Moreso if they think they were the ones who created you.

The issue (as I see it) is how to constantly kill yourself en-masse, without letting yourself know how you did it or getting yourself in the crossfire. Of course, if said character was an idiot, this might not be too much of an issue.

You just don't want eact copies of yourself running around. They won't listen to you, have the power to make your life hell, and outside of tasks that require multiple people they really offer nothing that you can't do yourself.

Even if you create someone just to send them off to do their own thing, they still have your memories and thus share all your personal connections, so for them it would be the equivalent of somebody kicking you out of your hone and forbidding you from seeing your friends and family, all completely out of nowhere.

On duplication, the power does have another weakness: you need to put some effort/energy into it.

While utilizing technology, even under ideal circumstances it took hours. Anything faster and the clone had a short life expenctancy.
If you took the far more fantasy aspect, either via magic or pseudo-science, the incantation or process to phase in copies of yourself still needed at least a few seconds. Not to mention that most of the time, the character rarely gets out of the cost without some energy payment.
