The mess of sheets stirred as the pillar of light glanced in at the bed from the window. Morning had just arrived in the small town of Varrock, and the sun was creeping over the blackened veil of clouds from the lands of Morytania.
"Ugh, another boring day it seems," grumbled something from beneath the sheets. "Seems I'll have to find something to occupy me today."
From under the sheets crawled out a young boy. He appeared to be around the age of twelve maybe even thirteen. He stood up in front of his bed, and the cold wooden floor met his bare feet. He trudged over to his dresser to peer into the large mirror that rested upon it. Greasy brown hair adorned the top of his head with bangs reaching almost to his eyes. The boy ran his hand through his hair trying to get out as many little knots as he could. It was a normal experience for him, since his hair never wanted to stay flat, and always managed to twist and curl over night.
"Looks good enough," the boy muttered to himself with a slight bit of glee in his voice. "Now onto breakfast."
Moving away from the dresser the boy slipped on some socks. They were plain, white cotton just like his shirt, although it was more of a beige color. As he grasped the doorknob to his room and pulled it open he proceeded to think how he could spend his time today.
"Hmm, well those kids I was playing with yesterday said they didn't want to see me around anymore." The boy approached the stairs leading to the ground level of his home. The light from the window opposite from the stairway nearly blinded him, and he stumbled backward in a feeble attempt to shield his eyes. "Oof!" He landed with a thud on the floor. "Cursed light. Why is that window facing east anyway?" Standing back up he brushed off his faded black pants and continued on his way down the stairs making sure not to look back through the window.

"Morning ol' chap." A familiar voice greeted the boy as he entered the dining room and pulled out a chair. "Have a good sleep?"
"It was just peachy, Daskal," replied the boy. "Now where'd you squander off to?" He leaned over the side of the table to peek under it in search of his friend.
"Why I'm still in the kitchen silly." The boy rose from his seat and re-entered the kitchen. "Over here in the cabinet."
As the child approached the sink where the cabinets hung above, he reached up to one of the handles and swung open a cabinet door. Inside was a cat lounging without a care in the world, as most cats usually are. The feline was covered in orange and white fur. The orange fur ran from the top of its head down its spine to the tip of its tail. The white fur coated from its chin to all over its stomach and legs.
"Now how did you manage to get in there, Daskal?" questioned the boy as he reached in to snag out his furry little friend. The cat was in perfect shape, and probably only four or five years old.
"Well you see, as I was on the prowl for a mouse I spotted a day ago, I spotted him dash away into this cupboard. You must've left it open from when you got the glass out. But anyway, after I hopped inside, the sneaky little rodent made a break for the door; all the commotion I made trying to catch him slammed it shut."
"What luck you have," snickered the boy. "Seeing as this is the one cabinet that has that little notch lock on it. I can see how you would've gotten stuck." He clutched the cat tightly and went back into the dining room stroking the cat's back as he walked.
The boy sat the now purring cat down on a chair next to the one he was previously sitting in. Back in the kitchen he grabbed a bowl and filled it with some fish pieces he retrieved from a bag, which was crudely labeled "Daskal's Food". While still in the kitchen he got out a loaf of bread from one of the boxes he had placed out on the counter, and chopped two slices for himself.

"Here you go," said the boy as he placed the bowl of fish in front of Daskal. "Your advice about making that 'ice box' thing really helped. Your food doesn't seem as bad anymore."
"When most foods are kept cold they tend to be more fresh." The cat tried to make as appreciative of a face as a cat could. "And I'm sure you feel the same, since you looked so pleased at last night's dinner." The boy nodded, as he recalled last night's fish and cold water. He was ecstatic at the thought of a meal being cold, yet fresh, that he did not have to get right before he ate it. "So do you have any plans on what we might do today?"
"Oh! I forgot to come up with something after I came down and had to help you." The boy took a pensive pose by placing his hand in a fist under his chin, and losing himself deep in thought. "Why don't we explore outside of the city today?"
The cat had already finished its meal by the time the boy had crammed the second piece of bread into his mouth after ending his sentence. "Sounds like a splendid plan. You should probably bring that weapon of yours so we can be safe if we stumble upon a goblin hole or something!"
"What a thrill that would be!" shouted the boy while he jumped from his seat, and dashed off back upstairs.
On the second level of his house was a balcony overlooking the kitchen. Across from the railing was the door to his room, and at the end of the walkway was a table. Placed on the table was an axe. It had two blades on either side and a firm metal handle down the middle. Wrapped around the base of the handle was a worn cloth that served for a grip.
The boy clutched the axe by the grip and slung it around his waist through a loop he had made on his pants. He felt like a tough warrior any time he held the axe; it was the greatest feeling in the world. Although he had never actually used the axe to do anything other than chop logs, he still felt like he could take on the world with it.

"You ready to go?" asked Daskal, as he leaped onto the boy's shoulder, making his perch with all four paws scrunched together.
"Yeah, I'm ready to go! Let me just grab my shoes and we'll be on our way." The cheery boy was broken from his trance, and bounded to the steps. Leaping down two steps at a time he twirled about as he landed on the ground floor. The worn out, leather flaps he called shoes awaited him next to the door at the front of the house opposite of the kitchen.
The outside town of Varrock was a peaceful place at the start of the morning. A refreshing cool air floated through the streets. Birds chirped from high on the rooftops. There was still a good hour or so before the hustle and bustle of town life would over come Varrock square and the surrounding streets.
The boy took note of a rustling sound in the alley behind him as he walked. He had only made it a house away from his and already someone was following him. The boy passed it off and decided he could have some fun with his follower. He paused in his step and withdrew his axe. Turning around he started to swing randomly in the air as if he were imagining himself to be fighting with some unknown foe. The follower moved about again creeping backwards a little behind their hiding wall.
"So then you noticed 'em too?" Daskal whispered quietly into the boy's ear. Seeing as Daskal was a cat his senses were much keener than the boy's, and he had realized someone was tailing them much earlier.

The boy ceased his swinging. "Yup, I think I have a plan on how we could at least find out who it is. Hold on tightly." With his last comment to Daskal the boy bolted down the road away from the person behind the wall. Surely enough the follower took off after him making sure to stay close to the buildings next to them. Off in the distance the boy made a sharp turn to the left down an alleyway. The other person, who was now obviously a boy of the same age, skidded to a halt on the corner of the alley. As he peaked his head around the edge he was met with a clunk to the skull, which was just enough to make him fall to the ground.
"Ow! What'd ya' do that for?" shrieked the boy as he clutched his now aching head.
As he shouldered his axe, the boy casually walked over to the slump on the ground, and towered over his fallen foe. "What're ya' following me for?" asked the boy in a mocking tone.
