Chapter 2: Tracking a Killer
It was eleven at night the day following the murders. The White Knights had been up around the clock trying to find and capture the killer. Killing a member of the Faladorian Guard was one of the most serious offences there was in the city. You do not kill a guard or a White Knight in Falador.
“Captain Roven, is there anything new about the killer?” Commander Lorad asked. The giant Fremmenik ducked under the oak door frame as he entered the room. Lorad was the second in command for the White Knights, right after Sir Amik Varze himself. He was a very large man with long brown hair and a braided beard. Lorad was born in Relleka, but had moved to Falador with his parents at an early age. The Fremnik clan was at war with the Moon clan, and his parents had wanted him to avoid the fighting.
Lorad took a good look around the room, which was covered in scattered papers and multiple posters on the wall.
Roven quickly rose from his chair. He removed his helm and saluted the commander, revealing a man with dark skin and long black hair. He could almost pass for being from Al-kharid.
“We hadn’t been able to find much more on the killer,” Roven replied. He was a well built man, who had lost both of his parents to the Black Knights. Ever since then he had been out to destroy the Black Knights for all that they had done. Roven saw no better way to accomplish this than join the White Knights.
"Do we have any names or descriptions to go on?" Commander Lorad asked.
“We do not know much about the man himself. The only description we were able to get was a tall and lean man in black robes. This guy was no ordinary thief.”
“Obviously,” replied Lorad. “No street criminal would have been able to sever the carotid, the sub*lavian, and the jugular arteries in one stab.”

"We also have not been able to determine where he went to. The criminal left the city, but beyond that we have no clue. The killer mostly likely went into the wilderness.”
“I doubt that. All of the wounds the victims suffered were of expert precision to vital body parts. The murderer is most likely a high profile assassin. He would not want to be that far away from his contacts.”
“Or her contacts. We assume that the killer is a man because of his build, but no one ever saw the face,” added Roven.
“Well, a woman being over six feet tall is very unlikely, but everyone is a suspect. Remember the female barbarian that killed the three merchants, and it took us two months to arrest her because we thought the killer was a man?”
"I did not work on the case but I certainly remember," replied Roven.
“Well he or she would have at least gone to a region outside of our jurisdiction.”
“Yes, but which region?”
“No idea. That is why we are investigating it. What about the stolen weapon?” Lorad asked.
“We have some good news there. One of the shop assistants was hiding in the loft at the time of the murder. Lucky for us, he managed to give us a good description of the three murders inside the building as well as the dagger. Apparently this was no ordinary dagger. It had a strange eye etched into the hilt that glowed a faint blue. The dagger might have belonged to the killer at some point, or someone heard about this rare weapon and wanted it for themselves. We still do not know the origins of the weapon or what it is capable of.”
“Was the glowing symbol magic?” Commander Lorad asked.
“I do not know, but Kargill went to go check it out. Gill should be back soon."

Without missing a beat, Captain Kargill entered the room. Commander Lorad was startled by the hooded figure in black robes.
“Dangit Kargill! You keep running around in those magic robes and people will think that you are the murderer!”
“Would not be the first time,” replied Kargill. “Two people already tried calling the guards on me. After all, the killer and I have a similar build.” This was true. Both Kargill and Garth were a little over six feet tall. They were also both muscular yet lean. The only significant difference in their appearance under their robes was that Kargill had much broader and wider shoulders.
“Then why don’t you take the robes off?” Lorad asked.
“I will have you know that these are the most powerful magic robes known to human or elf,” Kargill added.
“You elves are a strange lot,” replied Lorad. Kargill then removed his hood revealing his light blue skin. He had a very light complexion with a faint greenish tint. His ears were long and tipped at the end. Kargill's eyes were such a deep brown that it felt like he could see right through you and into your soul.
“Well then maybe I will not tell you about the murder weapon if you think that way about us elves,” replied Kargill.
“I am sorry Gill; now please tell us what you know,” said Commander Lorad.
“Is the strange eye magic like we thought?” Roven asked.
“It indeed is. The eye was some sort of magical enchantment. I could not find the origin or the meaning of the eye, but this guy must know a very powerful mage."
“How do you know that he did not place the enchantment himself?” Lorad asked.
“I suppose it is possible, but if the killer’s magical prowess is that good then he definitely would have used at least some sort of magic during the murders. Enchanting takes a lot of skill."

“So there was definitely an enchantment placed on the dagger,” saod Roven. “But why would he kill nine people just to get this dagger? I mean, if he was a robber he would not have passed up on the store’s numerous other valuables.”
“There is something about this weapon that makes it very valuable and powerful, possibly the magic imbued within it. The dagger must have belonged to the man at some point. The shop keeper’s assistant said that the dagger began glowing much brighter the evening of the murder. This man had obviously lost his dagger, and was afraid that it could have been traced back to him.”
“I don’t follow you,” replied Lorad with a confused look on his face.
“It is simple. Over time the dagger started to absorb some of the killer’s own life and magical energy. That is the reason it glowed brighter before the murders. The killer was closer to the weapon and the weapon could feel its owner’s magical and life energy. If a White Knight had seen the dagger, a magic user like me could have very easily traced the magical energy back to its owner.”
“Of course!” Lorad shouted. “The White Knights go in and stock up and sell their supplies every few days. This weapon must have been used for a separate murder at some point in the past. That is why the killer would go through so much trouble to obtain it!”
“Exactly,” replied Kargill. “I went and looked up to see if there were any murders or crimes involving the weapon. I found four separate occasions in which a killer matching this man's description had used a similar dagger. Apparently, on one of the occasions the dagger had been used in a failed assassination attempt on a high profile merchant in Ardourgne. The killer lost the dagger during the failed assassination, and he knew that it could be traced back to him.”
“We are really starting to get somewhere,” said Roven enthusiastically.

"Alright, so we know that the killer wanted his dagger back because it is very valuable and could be traced to him. Now that we don’t have the dagger how can we trace him now?” Lorad asked.
“Well that is a problem,” replied Kargill. “We cannot track the killer directly, but I think we can get a pretty decent idea about where the killer went.”
“Somewhere out of our jurisdiction I assume?” Lorad asked.

“Well, I had Kane do a track of the weapon.” Kane was a fellow White Knight and a friend to both Kargill and Roven. Kane was shy and stayed to himself a lot, but he was very reliable. He was also someone you would want to have on your side in a fight.
“He says the merchant that had almost been killed by the dagger had actually sold it.” Both Roven and Lorad laughed at this.
“Those merchants will do anything to make a few pieces of gold," laughed Roven.
“Kane said that the dagger exchanged hands several times until it was sold to the general store two days ago. As far as we know the merchant and his caravan are still in the city. He might just know where the weapon has been and had sightings of the killer."
“Good. First thing in the morning I want you two to find that merchant and find out what he knows. Also, make sure to thank Kane for me.”
“Will do commander,” Kargill and Roven said in unison.
“I almost forgot, what happened to Griff?” Lorad asked.
“Griff had a family matter to attend to. He says that his mom is sick.” Griff was the premier archer of the White Knights, and was very good friends with Kargill and Roven. He had also been helping the two with the case.
“Hope she gets better,” replied Lorad. “You boys better get some sleep, I want you two up at dawn and to find that merchant. I will make sure that the stable boy has horses ready for you two. Goodnight.” The commander then nodded to the young captains and made his to his office. Gill and Roven could go get some sleep, but Lorad still had a lot of work to do.
“So Gill, ready to track a killer?” Roven asked.
“When am I ever not ready? With a case this big we might just be looking at a promotion," replied Kargill.
“I hope your right. I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Later," replied Kargill. He gathered up his things from the room and strolled down to the White Knights' dormitories. He and Roven had a long day ahead of them
