Dawn broke across the horizon of the desert in the early hours of the morning, and Emma woke up refreshed and glad to have gotten some proper rest for the first time in a few days. She hadn't bothered to count the days since she had been there but she assumed it was at least five, and she was correct; it was the beginning of the sixth day. Strolling over to the doorway, she peered outside and noticed that the group were already beginning to make breakfast, so she decided to join them.

James also awoke, however not because of sunlight shining in his face but because of an alarm clock next to his bed. Grumbling under his breath, he considered pressing the 'snooze' button jutting out from the top but thought against it; after all, he needed to see what Emma and his ally, Lorja, were up to, as well as the other contenders scattered in various places around the desert.

Slowly he stood up and stretched, immediately getting dressed into the clothes already provided for him and sat brushing his hair. A few moments later, a woman came rushing into the room, holding a pack of tablets. “Sir, we've just brought these in from overseas, and we want you to test them, as we know how much you love testing things!” she said, a wide smile on her face. Gently she pressed them into his outstretched hand and he instantly took one from the packet, placing it on his tongue. The woman continued. “If they work, we won't need toothbrushes any more; we can simply chew two of these per day and they clean all the bacteria off your teeth!”

“Good t' know, Mary,” James replied, his mouth full. “I always like convenience.” After the woman had gone and he had finished chewing, he opened his door and walked along the corridor towards a large room, hearing the door automatically swing shut behind him.

The room was big enough to fit around five hundred people, each with a computer, and it was one he was always in, as it was part of his job.

It was the largest room in the entire building, which was impressive to some as it was directly connected to the entire Chiefs building. Some people were already seated and busily inspecting the feeds that came from the cameras, typing a phrase every so often, whilst others were just beginning to leave. The faint humming and buzzes of technology filled the air, and most felt like talking would create a nuisance, so barely anyone spoke apart from James, who often made announcements.

“Okay everyone, stop what you're doing.” James spoke loudly, well above the quietness that was the normal atmosphere in the room, and made a few people jump. Within a few seconds everyone had their heads turned towards him, apart from one person. She had her headphones in and for the first time unfortunately didn't manage to catch his order. In one swift movement he was beside her and one hand gripped her shoulder, the other grasping the back of the chair. He jolted the chair and the headphones fell off, causing her to twist her head towards his, her gaze meeting an angry glare.

*What did I just say, woman?” He spat the words out one by one, causing droplets of saliva to fly through the air and land on her face. The female kept a calm expression, although she was visibly shaking.

“Well, I don't know, sir. I was just trying to do my job and-”

“And part of your job is to obey your boss! Remember that I can quite easily fire you from this place – and you think you'd survive without this job? Just wait a few years and you'd see. We'd probably see you on the other side of the camera.* A few sniggers were heard from around the room. James paused for a moment, muttering an inaudible word under his breath, before continuing.

“Now that you're listening, let me start off by reminding you all once again: you're all here for a reason, and that is to make the world a better place.

Each day, we are advancing the human race by eliminating the worthless civilians we like to call the poor, and you are all doing a good job so far. We've still got a lot to do though. In two days' time, the next group will be released into the arena, so we need to see how they get on.”

“As usual, Dalan,” he said, pointing to a man with a silvery beard, “will be in charge of refilling the supplies for each of the participants, as will his team. Gondra, tomorrow you and your team are making sure that all the cameras are properly working. Make sure no-one's broken any of them. And Musled, as always you and your group are checking on the day where everyone is on the map, especially our little friends.” James laughed along with the two other men seated at opposite ends of the room. “Half of us will be helping me go out and find the participants, and the other half – well, some of you are fairly new, so you can just watch. Any questions?”

A man at the back of the room raised his hand. “Yes, Irensi?” James called.

“How do you know that the girl and Lorja aren't going to find a way out in two days?”

“Oh, I don't blame you for asking that question, you've only been here for three days,” the man responded, chuckling slightly. “See, we told Lorja that the map was wrong when it's actually more or less correct,” he began to explain, “but it's just outdated because it's been there a long time. There are some places that they simply won't have been to because they don't exist any more. Some places will have moved as well. That'll make it even more confusing. We like to mess with their heads a little.”

“But it looks like they're going in the right direction,” Ire_n_s_i responded, wrinkling his small nose.

In an instant Ire_n_s_i's screen showed up on James', and he pressed a few buttons. A camera disguised as a rock zoomed in on the pair, and sure enough, it showed them walking towards the direction of the gate, the map in Emma's hands.

“They don't even have the key to get out, but if they find a possible exit, it'll make them more motivated to find it, so we need to distract them for as long as possible. We can't do it too often though. We don't want it to look obvious, do we?” James smirked. “So we need to prepare a few surprises for them.

“However, what we need to do more of is strengthen the friendship between them. We need to make it so that they're almost inseparable. Then imagine what’ll happen when the girl dies. Because she will eventually. They all do.”
