“You must be very confused and I’m going to try to make as much sense as possible.”

“So when I woke up in this place, and when I was wandering I stumbled across a group of people who appeared to be friendly. The leader, who’s named Lorja, asked me if I could help them find a way out of this place. Apparently they’ve been living here for months and started their own settlement, almost like a village. They were placed here long ago by the people in control of the entire area, called the Chiefs, and they woke up here randomly one day just like you and me.

“They’ve been here for so long that the Chiefs have taken a liking to them and so Lorja and his group often do favours for them. They can’t really show that they want to get out of here because the Chiefs are in control of everything and will do things to ensure that they don’t get out, because Lorja’s group are essentially working for them. The Chiefs buried the key under the group of dates in hopes that it would remain there forever. Nobody ever dared to go there because it was rumoured that everyone who visited that place always died. We’re being used for their own entertainment, but we have no other option because they always promise us that as long as we keep killing people they’ll be happy with us and they won*t kill us. We kill for them. All these rules aren’t really set by Lorja but they’re set by the Chiefs.

“They communicate through cameras hidden in the desert and when they want to speak to him they activate his microphone which is clipped onto his shirt. He doesn’t get to choose when it’s activated, but there are usually certain times when it is. So we’re alright speaking for now, and plus these cameras were given to Lorja by the Chiefs, they’re not actually accessed by them.

“When I first met him, after you had visited him and parted ways, he told me about you and your friend and the fact that you told him what happened to his son, and he told me he was thankful.

That was the real Lorja, the friendly, honest man you met. When you were at the date crop and then had to run for your life because of the arrows that were life-threatening - that was us having to shoot you. We were doing that because we had to, because we were scared of getting killed ourselves if we did*’t comply.

“I felt so sorry for you that I parted from the other members and I chased after you and helped you. I did*’t think it was right that after doing such a good thing for the Alebans * that’s our name – you had to get this as some sort of twisted reward. So this is going to be my reward for helping you. Getting killed. If the Alebans decide not to kill me, they are all going to get killed, including me as well, so I have no choice.” He looked up and smiled at her, slowly letting out a breath that seemed to have been building up. “I hope helping you was worth it.”

“So let me get this straight,” the eighteen-year-old replied as she struggled to understand. “There are these people who have actually organised all of this just to kill people? What do they get out of this? How do they find entertainment in this? Is this some sort of punishment to the entire country or what?” Her calm tone of voice slowly rose to one of anger.

“Well, I’ve recognised a few people here including you and it seems that we all come from a similar background. Did you have rich parents?”

“Not really…”

“Did your family have excess money to spend on technology or things that they wanted?”

“Not regularly, no.*

*Were you considered ‘lower class’ or ‘middle class*?*

*Yes…” Emma could see what Aaron was getting at.

*I don’t know if this is for certain but I think it’s to weed out the poor to make the rich, including the Chiefs, richer and more powerful. The horrible thing is, I don’t think anyone outside this place knows about it. The Chiefs keep it a secret by not publicising it or letting the media get in * otherwise the whole thing could be considered murder and the rich would get a bad reputation. Apparently only one other person since this began managed to find the infamous key and get out but they were paid massive amounts of money by the Chiefs to keep quiet about it. And then, of course, they took the key back.” Aaron sighed, tugging at the chains fastened to his limbs.

“How do you even know all this?” Emma asked when the door to the next room opened and Lorja appeared, removing the fabric worn on his head to reveal the familiar grey, curly mass of hair that accompanied the aqua eyes the girl distinctively remembered. “I thought I recognised you,” she said to the man smugly.

“I was told by the Chiefs – well, not directly, I gathered information that was given to me bit by bit through our conversations.

And Aaron’s just as curious about this place as you are – I think everyone is, given that it’s an entirely new situation – so I told him. It’s not like we thought we were ever going to get out anyway.” Lorja chuckled to himself. *Until we looked through your bag and saw that you do indeed still have the key that you found at the circle of dates.

“We basically need you, because we have no idea exactly where we are on this map of yours, and therefore we won** know which way to go from here to get out. Though we must make it look like we’re not wanting to get out. The Chiefs have seen you carrying the map and told me that some of it’s true and some of it’s not, so we*ll have to be careful. The key, however – I don’t know if they saw it, but they haven’t told us so probably not, they probably just thought you were grabbing one of the dates that had maybe fallen – the two items are similar in colour anyway.” He smiled at her. “So we have to be subtle. Otherwise, we could all be potentially dead.”

“Alright…” Emma paused for a moment. “Can I be freed now? I don’t see why I’m still secured like this. Or why you were wearing that thing that covered your face. Or anything, really.”

“Chief’s orders,” Lorja responded simply, slipping the mask back onto his face. “Also, I have a feeling they’re going to call us up soon, so until then you’re going to be staying like that.”

Just as the words escaped his lips, a ringing sound erupted from somewhere inside the room Lorja was previously in. Turning on his heel, he swiftly exited before re-entering with a phone. Holding it to his ear, he waited a moment before pressing a button near the top of the device, which turned it to speakerphone, as a voice rang out. It was masculine and authoritative, but Emma did**t recognise it this time. “Are you there, Lorja?” it questioned.

“Yeah, James,” the man in front of her responded, pressing another button on the phone which caused the screen to light up.

Lorja had his back turned to her, and because of this Emma could see the face of who was apparently James. In the bottom-right corner of the screen she was taken by surprise to see herself and Lorja’s face, but tried to hide it by yawning.

“Where are you?” James asked with a curious tone. Lorja’s face immediately transformed into a panicked expression as he lowered the phone to his side and immediately went into the other room. Almost on purpose he left the door open, and the sound of climbing could be heard as he reached the surface of the desert through the trapdoor Emma originally fell through. His voice could also be heard as he began talking to James once more.

“Sorry, I was with the girl.”

“Ah. I saw you had the girl with you. I believe you also have the boy as well?” James asked.

“Indeed I do. They are both very secure and there’s no way for them to escape.”

“Very good. You can commence with the execution now.* Emma’s eyes slightly widened as she heard those words. James continued, “However, in order to make sure that you actually go through with the execution, you will need to keep the call open and make sure that I am able to see what is going on. It is also required that the girl watches the execution.”

“As you wish,” Lorja simply replied as he came down once again, entered the room and attached the phone to the wall opposite Aaron. He turned his back to the camera so that he was facing Emma before giving her a look that could only be described as sorrowful. He spiralled back round, now facing the guards. “Start,” he ordered.

Emma glanced briefly at the four guards surrounding her and noticed that they were intensely watching her eye movements. The camera was shifted occasionally in the girl’s direction by Lorja to show James that she was still watching before being angled back towards Aaron.

Whenever the woman flinched or looked away from the scene, one of the guards would give her a slap across the face; it was not hard enough to cause injury but enough to make a sound that would be heard by James. Eventually, with reddened cheeks, Emma was forced to look at the scene before her.

The awful screams of Aaron echoed around the room as the guards relentlessly tore at his body, which was still helplessly bound to the chains, with fierce punches and violent kicks. Emma looked on as blood began to seep out of countless wounds inflicted on his large frame, yet the guards still tirelessly continued until his body was no longer recognisable. His head lolled, the chocolate-brown of his eyes now dulled and the brightness now missing, for they were lifeless. His hair was tinted with crimson, contrasting with his pale face as his breathing gradually slowed. After to what seemed like the girl was hours but was only a few moments, his body fell limp.

Emma had to gather the last of her remaining energy to resist the urge to scream. Lorja glanced up at her with an expression full of regret as the guards detached the chains from Aaron’s limbs and dragged him out of sight. James’ voice could be heard clearly from the phone as he laughed and said, “You have done well, Lorja. It is up to you what you do with her now. I will talk to you again later.” A far-off click was heard before the screen went dark, and silence consumed the room. Neither Lorja nor Emma knew what to say, yet both had so many questions to ask each other.

“I’m sorry you had to see that,* Lorja mumbled, diverting his gaze to the floor.

*Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault,” Emma retorted as the four guards loosened the ropes constraining her. Shakily, she jumped down from the wall. “I’m just really confused,” she stated, brushing sand off of her knees and staring at the man opposite her.

He grabbed the phone and placed it back into his pocket, and the girl noticed that his hands were shaking just as much as she was.

*What about?” Lorja asked, gathering the rope and chains and pulling back the lever, closing the door to the room where Aaron once stood. Emma followed him to the other room and recognised the square hole in the ceiling she fell out of, along with a ladder leant against one of the walls. She watched as he opened a box full of various items and placed the chains and rope neatly on top of them. “Aaron and I have already explained enough. What else do you so desperately need to know?"

Emma sighed, causing Lorja to turn around. “I still don’t get why you’ve just murdered someone, who saved my life, in front of me. And I know you’re sorry for it, but is there really a need for all of this? Why are you all trying to hide everything you do and are being so cryptic?”

“Aaron told you the majority of what you need to know,* Lorja answered, furrowing his eyebrows, “but that might have been a bit too much for you to take in. Basically, the Chiefs are the heads of this place. They know everything as long as they have cameras and microphones to watch what we’re doing. Nobody outside knows about this place, because the Chiefs… well, they’re the richest people in the country, they can do whatever they want, they can pay people to keep quiet about it.* Lorja returned a sigh. “Oh, and they can kill you if you don’t comply,” he added quickly.

“So I’m involved in all of this because I have a key to get out of here?” Emma asked. *Wait, if they have cameras everywhere, doesn’t that mean they can watch us and hear us right now?*

*I thought Aaron told you,” the man replied as the girl followed him into the now empty main room. “Because we’ve been here the longest, we know how things work around here. The Chiefs, I guess, did*’* want the cameras anymore and discarded them –

as they do with everything they don’* want – in the desert, and we picked them up and used them here. They never asked us about it, so either they trust us enough or they simply don’t care. Anyway, they can** see anything that goes on, so we can talk freely.”

“Okay, that makes a bit more sense. But what’s with the key and the map? Why’d you take everything?”

“Well, again, seeing as we’ve been here the longest, and they don’t ever enter the arena, they have sort of made us the second-in-charge. They give us orders and we have to do what they say… otherwise, long story short, we get killed. The orders are like when we had to kill Aaron, or when we had to kidnap you, and then when they had to watch Aaron getting killed. Things like that. It’s not stuff we want to do – well, I don’* want to do most of the stuff they get us to do anyway – but we have to do it.* Lorja paused, before remembering Emma’s original question. “Oh right, the key.

“There were always rumours of three things that were hidden in the desert; a key, a map and a gate. You’ve found two of them, and luckily for you, the gate’s shown on the map. However, the map was actually created by the Chiefs, and it should be confusing because some of it’s not true. They saw you carrying it, which is why they got us to kidnap you. We’re going to give you both the key and the map back. However, you can** let them know that you’ve still got the map because they’ll get suspicious; we’ve supposed to have destroyed it by now.*

*Why haven’t you?” Emma suddenly interrupted, her eyebrows raising.

“Emma, we don’* want to live like this anymore. We’re sick of being forced to do things that are so inhumane. We thought we’d never have a chance of getting out of this place until we heard about you. We’d have never guessed that the woman we met at our village would be you, the one who’s given us so much hope. We need you to help us escape.”

Everything began to come together in Emma’s mind. “So… you’re going to be using me to help you find a way out?” she asked.

“Well, yes,” Lorja started, “but I’m sure you want to get out just as much as we do, so we can both escape.” He went back inside the room that contained the trapdoor whilst Emma stood and waited and brought out the key and the map soon after. Giving them to her, he warned, “Remember though, you must make sure they don’t see either of those things in your possession, otherwise there’s no doubt we’ll get in trouble. If you want to see the map at any time, you need to either come back here or make sure there are absolutely no cameras facing your direction, though there likely will be.”

“Is there anything else I need to know?”

“I don’t think so, apart from – well, I don’t know for certain, but I think there may be some sort of system near the gate – it seems that when I started out here, and when I was in a certain area, I would get attacked more than when I was in a more remote section of the desert. So that might help us. But other than that, I don’t have anything else I need to tell you. Now, before you go back outside, you need to firstly put those things back in your bag.” He exited and entered the room once more with Emma’s satchel in his hands before the woman took it and did what he said. “Also remember that you’re meant to be replacing Aaron, so you can*t look suspicious, and you have to look like you’re helping us.” The man gestured to the guards who were waiting in the room Aaron’s body once lay, saying, “You can take your armour off now.”

As each guard revealed their face, Emma vaguely recognised Elsah, the man who had healed her at the village, and a few other faces who she had seemed to memorise when sitting at the campfire. She was still astounded at how a man who was truly so caring and kind could have a completely different personality when given a few commands. She hoped he wasn’t one of the men who slapped her.

“Come on, Emma. We need to find this exit as soon as possible,” Lorja commanded as he beckoned for the girl to follow him. She took one quick look in her bag before rushing off, up the ladder and into the cool yet startling air, her frame illuminated by the pale moonlight.

When looking into her bag, she was pleasantly surprised at the fact that all the items she had before the kidnapping had remained intact. There were some scorpion leftovers and a few half-empty flasks, but what she was grateful for was that her bag was still mostly full with the dates she had collected. As she struggled to catch up to Lorja, who was busily walking towards the village nearby, she took a generous bite out of the sweet, delicious fruit. As juice ran down her lips and onto her stained shirt, she broke out into a gentle jog, soon going at the same pace as the man in front of her. The moon was the only source of light she had until Lorja began to tend to the centre fire, and as Emma looked back she could faintly make out the silhouettes of Elsah and the rest of the guards strolling along the plains.

Lorja opened the door of one of the huts and flung himself down on a small bed, burying his face in a pillow. Before Emma could ask, he mumbled, “Go and find the room you had the other day and sleep there. If you want to ask me anything else you can talk to me in the morning. I’m exhausted.”

Without saying a word, Emma followed his command and after quietly closing the door behind her cautiously walked over to her room. Upon opening the door to that room, she noticed that it was in a similar state to how she and Scarlett had left it. Feeling her eyelids droop more and more each second, she quickly settled into her bed. Within minutes she fell asleep, and for the first time in a long while, it had been peaceful.
