LoneWolfe, if you apply your story will be given the rank I think it deserves; you will not simply start out at the bottom. As for joining separate guilds, it was certainly in style back in the day when this forum had more than two or three active guilds; some of it was about the signature, but for the most part it was for the individual benefits offered by each guild. For example, I'll review the whole story with which an author applies, but The Novelists' Guild reviews only an excerpt from it.
For purely academic purposes, here is a relatively complete list of all the credentials I've picked up along the way:
