After catching their breaths from the long walk, Jack and Ryan continued into the city and slipped through the crowds of people, that could only be seen in the morning and at night, until they reached the CCS(Central Cart Station).

"Alright, we gonna take these tickets or use our 'prize' money?" Jack asked, unsure about attempting a theft now.

"We'll pay" Ryan responded. "Big city, a lot of people. Even I'm not stupid enough to try it here" Ryan chuckled and pulled a handful of coins from the, nearly hidden, bag around his waist. After taking the money out, Ryan walked inside the main building–located in the southern end of the station–and came out a minute or two later with two tickets.

"Next stop, Taylen" Ryan announced to Jack as he handed him one of the two tickets.

Chapter Four
Thieves Camp

Tram rides were known for their speed, one of the key reasons for New Roy flourishes economically. Many argue New Roy should be the continents capital, but the Heran dictator would not hear of it. Within half an hour, the tram in which Jack and Ryan boarded had made a journey north that would take all day on foot, even longer if you took any breaks.

Ignorant and unappreciative towards whoever designed the cart system, Jack and Ryan hopped out of their cart and had a good stretch. Ryan made a deep sigh, and scanned the city. Taylen was the exact opposite of New Roy, and Ryan was disgusted by it.

Unlike New Roy's massive buildings and dense population, Taylen was a small town of shacks. the town had a population somewhere between one-hundred and two-hundred people, and the sole reason a cart track was built this far north was because Taylen was built against the eastern side of the Blank Sea; making it a perfect spot to build a docking point for those going to and from the three islands surrounding Yoren.

The cart system up here also served towards the purpose of Jack and Ryan; for only a few miles north-east was a harsh jungle of large bushes and other types of normally small-plants. The Akarv army has sent multiple scout parties into the jungle to try to find any possible trace of the thieves, but no one ever returned. Once The Sergeant took a boat all the way around up behind the jungle; but to his disappointment, all he saw was that the jungle went right up to the edge of the water. After that The Sergeant concluded that his scout parties had gotten lost and probably killed by wildlife.

He was wrong.

---

The sun was now tucking itself in, and the light of day was vanishing. Jack and Ryan had commenced walking since they arrived in Taylen, and were just now reaching the edge of the jungle. Neither of the two stopped to reconsider entering the forest; meaning they knew where they were going.

Ryan entered first, sliding past the plants with caution; he did not want to leave a trail. Jack followed his exact movements, until the two reached a very small opening. From here the night sky could be seen, but surrounding it was plant-life. Ryan held his head towards the sky for a few moments, then he inhaled. He pressed his tongue to the back of his teeth, and whistled. Silence ensued, and then the surrounding bushes began to rattle.

Suddenly, two men clad in leather armor leaped from the bushes and raised expertly crafted bows, loaded with arrows of an iron alloy, towards Jack and Ryan.

"Theo and Ranzarr." Ryan said without being asked anything. The two men lowered there bows, and cracked a smile.

"Good to see you made it back, brother" one of the archers said as he and Ryan shook hands.

"You can't get rid of me that easy, Len." Ryan laughed as Len walked by him, into the jungle. Jack and Len's assistant archer followed them, making sure they were careful to not leave any trail as Ryan and Len were not.

It came as a relief when the four cleared the entangled mess of the forest, and found themselves in a much large opening. All around was more forest, extending at least a mile out in every direction. The perfect place to hide something; like a camp.

In the center of the opening, a light shown; a campfire was burning. Around it, twenty-or-so people could be seen from the light the fire was given off, and numerous tents could also be seen scattered about. Before any of the four advanced forward, Len put his hand on Ryan's shoulder, then moved back into the jungle. His assistant followed him, leaving Jack and Ryan alone in the outpost.

A smile crept onto Ryan's face, and he walked forward towards the laughing bunch of people in the camp. Jack followed him for a little while, then stopped just before the light of the fire could reveal him. Ryan did not notice, and continued forward into the center. He stopped by the fire, and silence fell upon the camp.

Each of the camp members stared up at him with mixed faces; but after a few moments they all broke into laughter. Each of them got up to shake Ryan's hand and welcome him back. Ryan laughed as he was greeted, and then he was directed south of the fire where someone was sitting with his eyes closed.

Ryan nodded and waved at the person directing him; marking thanks. He walked up to the man, and sat down next to him. He stayed silent for a minute, before saying: "Oliver"

Oliver's formerly emotionless expression broke into a smile, and his eyes opened to reveal two dark green eyes. "What's happening?" Ryan chuckled, standing back up to offer a handshake.

"Welcome back, Ryan" Oliver greeted and stood up as well, locking his grip with Ryan's. The two clenched their grips as if in competition, and they showed a playful face. After the two released grips, Oliver continued: "How was your theft? New Roy is a tough one, so I don't imagine well." Oliver predicted, as if he already knew.

"It's not one of my best grabs" Ryan admitted, pulling his sack of loot out of his pockets, and he put it into Oliver's hand. "But it's something. Jack's insisting that I'm losing my style."

"By no means should you take this offensively, but I think he may be right." Oliver sighed. "I mean, look at me. Two years ago I was starting to slip up, and now I don't even leave the camp."

"Don't feel bad about that, Oliver. You easily make up for it as a strategist." Ryan said positively towards Oliver.

"I do not feel bad about it at all; I'm just saying my skill as a thief has vanished, and yours very might well too." Oliver explained, and then his face became confused. "Speaking of which, where is Jack?"

"I'm here" Jack's voice came abruptly from behind Oliver, now faintly visible from the fire's light. "And I do not appreciate you talking about me behind my back, Ryan."

Ryan sighed and chuckled slightly. "Oh come on, you know I'm not going to talk down about you or anything, I just don't appreciate you telling me that I suck."

"The truth is not always appreciated." Jack finished, and stepped over the log Oliver had been sitting on, and made way towards a tent in the North-eastern part of the camp.

"What a party-pooper" Ryan sighed, and turned back to Oliver, whose eyes were now closed again.

"Live on warnings and possibilities, not pride and the past." Oliver said in a calming voice; one that would get through the head of the most thick-headed person in the land, with no argument received. Oliver was famous in the group for this; he knew how to think. Since he and his former partner quit there lives as thieves, each have become so much more important to the group. Oliver became a strategist; he could accurately predict how a theft would play out, and how to go about doing one. Ryan has lived by Oliver's advice since he started strategizing. Oliver's former partner, however, infiltrated Akarv's guard and acts as a spy for camp.

Ryan shook his head in amazement. "You never cease to amaze me, Oliver." He said in almost a whisper. He could find no more to say, and stood up. The chatter had picked up since Ryan and Oliver and Ryan began speaking, but now it was dying down as the flap to the largest tent in the camp opened.

From within the tent came a man of about seventy years, walking with the support of a well carved cane. His face was darkened by years in the sunlight, and a gray matte of hair sat upon his head. A beard of the same shade as his hair fell from his chin, and his brown eyes showed experience. The old man walked through the circle of thieves and approached Ryan. The old man reached his left hand up and rested it on Ryan's shoulder.

"Welcome back, Theo" He said in a voice that surged authority; required respect.

"Thank you, Stealer" Ryan thanked as the old man removed his hand from Ryan's shoulder. Ryan, and the entire camp, had never learned the name of Stealer, so they called him just that; because he had started the camp all of them were now in, and he was once a master thief. In curiosity of his identity, some of the thieves in the camp started some rumors, one being that he used to hold a high position in power among the Akarv military. He immediately denied this rumor, as well as every other rumor that popped up from time to time. Eventually, they ceased.

Chapter Five
Revelations

Silence; broken in a heart beat, yet it can be crafted in an instant. Throughout the camp of thieves the soundless art sat as light began to shed from the massive wild life surrounding the camp. With that, the silence was broken.

Jack walked out of his tent, being the first one awake as usual, and stood over the remains of the fire from the previous night. He stared down into the embers, and held his arms crossed. Jack’s gaze sat in the fire, and one might think it would reignite itself from the intensity of Jack’s glare. Ruffling came from a tent beyond the fire, and Oliver appeared in the opening.

“You are difficult to understand, Jack” Oliver sighed as he walked towards Jack, his arms crossed behind his back. “I can never tell what you’re feeling; what you’re thinking. You could swear innocent on a crime I watched you do, and make me question your guilt. You know more than you show... and even hide-”

“Stop.” Jack interrupted, his voice gruff from slight drowsiness. “I am what you see in front of you; a thief’s assistant with a mysterious personality. Well, there’s nothing to hide. I know myself better than anyone else does, and that includes you.”

Oliver exhaled through his nose, and bowed his head. “I shall take your word for it... but will the others? More and more recently have you been becoming suspicious. Some may begin to think you are insane... or worse.”

“I said stop.” Jack exhaled roughly, and he glared at Oliver. “You’re the smart one, so you should know by now that I have nothing to hide.” With that, Jack turned his back to Oliver and walked back to his tent.

Jack rarely talked in a voice as low as Oliver's. In fact, his voice was much of an uproar; thus much of the camp was awakened by the short dispute between Jack and Oliver. Among the group was Ryan, but not Stealer. Another thing Stealer was legendary for was that he could not be awoken by anything but himself.

The interesting part of that was that his body seemed to have an active alarm system; when he was in some kind of danger he would awaken in time to save himself.

Most of the thieves went immediately for a larger tent north of the fire pit, where all the camps food was held. A select few threw some old wood into the remains of the fire; ashes flying into the air as the wood crashed into the char.

“What was with up with Jack’s uproar?” Ryan asked as he walked to where Oliver had taken a seat.

Oliver remained silent for several moments, then spoke: “I was trying to figure him out. He’s complicated… and stubborn. All I did was try to get him to speak his mind, and he refused.”

Ryan sighed and shook his head. “That’s Jack for you... paranoid and impossible to read. But I’d be dead or rotting in prison without him.”

“Perhaps you should try to talk to him. You are better friends with him than anyone else here.” Oliver suggested, his voice filled with worry.

Unable to refuse Oliver’s request, Ryan stood up and walked towards Jack’s tent, opening the flap quietly as he entered. Inside he saw Jack sitting on his bed with his head lowered. The only source of light was the rising sun, and a small candle just in front of Jack.

Ryan walked forward, and placed his hand on Jack’s shoulder. Ryan quickly reconsidered if that was a good choice as Jack immediately turned and shoved Ryan off, almost throwing his fist into his gut.

After letting soak in what just happened, Jack shook his head and spoke: “Sorry, you startled me.”

“I was just coming to see if you were all right. You have been acting strange, lately.” Ryan explained, trying to decide whether on not he should take a seat, still startled from Jack’s reaction.

“I’m fine... I’m just tired” Jack sighed, looking down at the candle. “Could you leave me be now, please?*

Ryan smiled understandingly and raised his palms towards Jack. “OK, I’ll tell the others to leave you alone too.” With that, Ryan left Jack’s tent and made his way back towards Oliver.

---

“Weeds... that’s all I’m good for. Watching a bunch of overgrown weeds,” Len grouchily mumbled to himself, though it was his lack of sleep that drove his speech; not what he actually believed. Len enjoyed the guard as watchman, as did his partner Ron. In fact, the two had volunteered. Their job was to be either an escort, or an assassin. No one on the outside must know of their camp; that’s what the two constantly told themselves.

Adrenaline rushed through Len as a slight snap of a twig caught his ear, then rustling from not to far away. He grabbed an arrow from his quiver, and held it against his bow. Staying low to the ground, he crept forward slightly.

The rustling had stopped, but Len could feel that someone was still here. Since there was no sound, though, Len became suspicious. “Ron? Ron, is that you?” He called in a hush voice, then the next thing he knew a knife was being held against his throat from behind. Len gasped, and held his neck back, trying to avoid his throat being split open.

“Take me to the camp, and my little friend here won’t slice your head off” A female voice threatened, and Len’s face grew white with shock. The right corner of his mouth raised as if in a smile for a slight second, and then he said: “Yes Ma’am...”

---

Ryan huffed as he took a seat next to Oliver, and then he sighed deeply.

“I take it you got nowhere with him?” Oliver asked without looking at Ryan.

“Unfortunately; he just wants to be left alone. He claims that he’s tired.” Ryan answered, shaking his head.

“Then it is for the best we leave him. If it is rest that he needs, then it is not our right to deny it from him.” Oliver answered, in a ‘the last I want to hear of it’ tone.

Ryan nodded, and flinched as a crash and grunt came from the forest behind them. He and Oliver stood up and looked at where the crash came from, and several other thieves came from the ‘eating tent’ to see what had happened.

Within several moments, Len had fallen from the brush; his bow not with him. He looked up at the group, a look of fear in his eyes. The thieves looked back up, and a woman–Terri–in Akarv armor came out of the forest, holding Len’s bow.

The thieves glared at Terri with anger, and Terri simply smirked. Oliver shook his head and smiled, while the other thieves around him laughed and walked away.

“Terri” Oliver said, still shaking his head with a grin on his face.

Terri nodded, and helped Len to his feet. “Thanks for playing along” she said, and handed Len his bow back. She turned towards the camp, and walked up to Oliver and Ryan.

“Welcome back” Oliver greeted as the two hugged, Ryan smirking.

“I wish I got along with my partner as well as you two do.” Ryan said, truly not caring how he and Jack got along. Though he called Jack a friend, Ryan thought of him as nothing more than a partner that assaults his confidence.

“It’s good to see you too” Terri laughed as she and Ryan shook hands. “But you’re getting a bit careless... Akarv’s Sergeant sent me out here looking for you. I don’t think he suspects anything, though.”

“Then we shall be thankful that he sent you here rather than another. Is there anything else we should know?” Oliver asked as he took his seat, and offered the one next to him to Terri.

“No, but I find it humorous that the Sergeant sent two of his men to the peninsula. Knowing the guys who were assigned there, they’ll probably walk over the Gine flowers and burn to death.” Terri laughed, stretching her legs before she sat down.
