Chapter One
Ryan Theo

Ryan continued to run, though he knew he was not being followed. He continued away from the city towards the east, until he reached an outcrop of rocks. He purposely ran into them, and slid between two of the stones, find himself in a small concealed area with a hidden trapdoor. Smiling, he bent down and opened the trapdoor, climbing down the flimsy iron ladder that allowed one to enter and exit.

Halfway down, he let go of the railing and landed with a splash. With a slight sense of disgust, Ryan trudged through the slimy water until he reached a small island at the far north end of the room.

He felt safe now, having surely outrun any enforcers of the law. With this feeling of security at hand, he pulled his hood back and his scruffy, neck-length hair fell free. His dark black beard dripped with sweat from both running, and from the building heat of his black-clothed disguise.

"That was fun" Ryan sighed as he sat down against the wall of the cave, placing the bag of loot he stole next to him. For several minutes he sat there and rested, the heat that had built on his body surging away and his beard and hair drying from the sweat. As his heart rate slowed down, he opened his dark-blue eyes again and turned to his loot.

"Let's see what we got in here.." He thought out loud, and opened the sack. He reached inside, and he could feel round pieces of metal rubbing up against his gloves. Unsatisfied, he grabbed the bag and lifted it into the air. With a turn of his wrists, he dumped the bag out onto the floor, and a handful of coins fell from the bag; nothing more.

"This-... this is it? Why.. this is probably only one hundred thousand coins!" Ryan gasped, staring at the money horrifyingly.

"You're losing it, Ryan" Jack said from behind Ryan, and he trudged through the slime up to the island Ryan was sitting on. "I can remember when you could steal millions.. in both items and coins."

"Ya.. well, I don't know what happened. I had plenty of time.. It was the bankers fault!" Ryan replied desperately, not wanting to be taunted by his partner.

Jack sighed, and placed his hand against his cleanly shaven face. His dark brown eyes fell to the floor, and the light from the torches dimly lighting the room flickered against his dark skin. "Sooner or later, your high-risk tactics and recklessness are going to catch up to you."

"..Explain." Ryan said after a momentary pause.

"Higher-scaled thefts in broad daylight, waiting on the bankers to give you the items, entering a guarded bank. You. Are. Losing it!" Jack responded, his voice becoming more enraged towards the end. "You used to steal millions! Now look at you, you're sitting in a pile of your worst steal yet!"

"At least I made anything!" Ryan retaliated, and got to his feet. "All you did was break some glass!"

"You would be half way to the prison colony right now if it weren't for me!" Jack retaliated, standing at his full height, barely standing taller than Ryan. "Or worse-"

"Oh please, give it up with that dumb reaper tale already" Ryan sighed, falling back to the floor. "As long as I've known you you've been pulling that card. I'm surprised we haven't turned you over to an asylum."

"Believe what you want, but I know it exists. There is a reaper out there, in one form or another!" Jack responded defensively. an emotional side of him seeming to have been struck.

"Yah yah, let's just forget this day and move on. It was a bad catch" Ryan sighed, taking into consideration the peaceful advice that would have been given now by a good friend of his, Oliver Herwall.

Jack sighed harshly, but he nodded his head in agreement. "Now what?"

"We might as well head back up to camp. Ditch your disguise here, I'd rather not be tracked." Ryan suggested, and got up high enough so he could shift to his knees. He then commenced to replace the money he retrieved in his bag.

"Alright.. let's go" Jack sighed, and began to walk towards the ladder, removing his beige-tinted, armored robes and dropping them into the slime. Under his armor was your average pair of jeans, and a casual shirt. His hair fell down past his back, and rested as a mop, matted by sweat. When Ryan finished returning the money to his bag, he pulled the black clothing off of him, revealing his own pair of casual clothing. With his disguise ditched, he followed Jack out of the cave.

---

"Unlock the gates, the Sergeant approaches!!" A voice from atop a watch tower called, and the wooden doors of the Akarv castle slowly pulled upon from either side. The Sergeant, so called by the watchman, did not have to cease walking to gain entrance, for by the time he reached the doors they had been opened wide enough for him to enter.

He continued to walk through the castle, the only sound he made was the clinking of his light gray armor. Each of his shoulders were sharply studded, and he wore a piece of cloth around his mouth for a helmet. He dark blue, almost black, eyes stayed focus dead ahead, and his buzz-cut hair remained motionless. On his belt hung a scimitar of similar material to his armor, and a small black dagger rested firmly on the opposite side of his belt.

After walking to the adjacent side of the castle from which he entered, he began to climb a staircase at the base of one of the watchtowers. He climbed several floors upwards, until he reached the top. As soon as he did, he walked forward a ways and looked over the edge, staring into the distant lands.

"S-sir" A familiar voice stuttered behind the Sergeant. With the memory of an elephant, the Sergeant immediately recalled the man as the soldier he deployed to patrol the Alred bank.

"What is it, Herman? Why have thou returned when you should be protecting your post." The Sergeant asked, still not having turned around.

"Well.. the bank was robbed. I got distracted for a mere few seconds, and when I returned the thief was already gone.." Herman sheepishly replied.

"It must be code-name reaper thief.." The sergeant sighed, sounding like he thought he was alone. "Named for his unusual appearance as a reaper, and his accomplice; a man whose identity is unknown and is found wherever the reaper thief strikes."

"That must have been who distracted me, sir." Herman replied, fearing for his job at this point. "I chased him down, and almost got him! But the little crook sucker punched me and got away" He lied, desperately trying to save his role as an Akarv soldier.

Finally turning around, the Sergeant said: "This man is the trickiest thief we know. I do not blame you for his outsmarting you. However, I am officially putting you on this case."

Too fearful to argue, Herman nodded his head and walked back down the stairs. Alone again, the Sergeant turned around and continued to stare. "This time.. he will not escape."

Chapter Two
Heran Point

Ryan knew the path all too well. He was constantly making trips back and forth from Tedre to Yoren, and though it was a long walk from Alred to New Roy, the capital of Yoren, he walked without a complaint. Jack followed him a few feet back, his focus elsewhere as he instinctively followed the trail that he knew led to the capital.

As the sun began to hide under it's mountainous cover, Ryan and Jack stopped to rest for the night. Their walking had taken them north, out of Tedre, and into the sliver of the country Hera that separated Tedre and Yoren. Luckily for them, the Heran Point, a small town located on the sliver, was only a short distance; thus they did not have to sleep on the ground.

Ryan and Jack entered the city and made way towards the only structure with lights; the local inn.

Ryan entered first, barely having to nudge the door to open it. There was much chatter here, and the smell of beer was almost enough to intoxicate you. "I'll pay for the rooms" Ryan stated, and he squeezed his way past the drunken men of the inn.

"Two rooms please. No questions asked" Ryan commanded, pulling a handful of coins from, what seemed like his pocket to the bartender, the sack of money he stole and placing it on the counter. "Add a drink to that as well." The bartender nodded, and turned around to get a drink for Ryan.

It took a few moments, but the bartender returned with two keys and a filled beer glass. "Thank you" Ryan thanked, and turned from the bar, shoving past drunken slobs towards the stairs at the far left side of the bar.

Ryan assumed Jack had already went upstairs, and he ascended to the upper portion of the inn. as he suspected, Jack was leaning against the wall to the back of the stairs. "Pay for the rooms?" He asked, his eyes locked onto the floor. "I guess that means your lock picking ability has diminished as well.

"It's late, and my vision is blurred from being tired" Ryan pathetically lied, trying to avoid the truth in Jack's statement.

"I can distinctly remember when you ate free, slept free, and traveled for free. Now you're relying on your stolen profit to live!" Jack rubbed in, now looking Ryan in the eye.

"You know what? Fine!" Ryan scowled in retaliation. He spun around and walked to one of the vacant rooms. He knelt so that he was on eye level with the lock, placed his drink to the side, and pulled a tiny metal wire out of his pocket. Closing one eye, he pushed the wire into the lock and began to move it around. He squinted his other eye to try and see better, and he moved the wire deeper into the lock. Unexpectedly, his fingers slipped and he lost grip of the wire, which fell a short distance, yet still out of reach, down the lock.

"Perhaps thirty years doing the same thing has worn you out" Jack sighed, and took a few steps forward.

Feeling defeated, Ryan grabbed one of the keys he had been given and angrily shoved it into the keyhole, unlocking the door. He grabbed his drink, and walked to the room next to it.

"Tomorrow we'll enter New Roy and take the cart system to Taylen.." Ryan sighed, never having used the cart system before. Surprisingly unsurprised by Ryan's decision, Jack entered the room Ryan left unlocked and fell onto the bed, falling asleep near instantly.

Ryan entered his room and slammed the door shut, turning the inside lock as he did. He growled, and chugged the beer, sitting on the edge of the bed. "What's happening to me? I've been doing this since I was twelve.. why is it going away after all this time?" He asked himself, and lifted his legs onto the bed. He lied against the straw-filled pillow the inn had to offer and closed his eyes.

Some hours into his sleep, images of the night kicked in. In his head, he could see an ally being murdered by an friend, a partner dying, and the hood of the rumored grim reaper flashing around in random areas. Thunder roared inside of his mind, and the complete image of a grim reaper appeared in his mind.

His body unable to take the shock lightly, Ryan swung awake, panting from being startled. Meanwhile, unknown to him, Jack slept peacefully in his room with a wide smile drawn across his face.

Chapter Three
New Roy

The Sergeant paced in front of a line of armed soldiers, four men and one woman. His head hung limp, and the fingers of his right hand were clenched the the bridge of his nose. He took a deep breath, sighed deeply, and began to speak: "Soldiers . . Our continent has been plagued for a period of time longer than I can remember. And this plague . . has just struck our peaceful brothers in Alred." The Sergeant lectured in a depressed, angered, and commanding tone. "But this plague is not infectious . . it can not be caught."

The Sergeant took a pause, looking into the eyes of each soldier in front of him. His facial expression now lost the little depression it had and became fully commanding. "Thieves. The most notorious thief on this continent has made his latest attack, in the most peaceful city in. This. Land!" The Sergeant scowled, ending with an uproar. "It is in both my interest, and the interest of the whole of Kondrania that this man be brought to justice. So, that is why you five are here."

Each of the five soldiers, one of them being Herman–the soldier on duty in Alred at the time of the theft–straightened their stance. The Sergeant raised his chin, and paced by the soldiers again, stopping at the only female in the group. He looked down at her, and his scowl worsened. "What is your name?" He asked, lowering his head and backing up a slight step.

"Terri Lawrence, sir." Terri responded quickly, her posture remaining erect.

The Sergeant looked at her curiously, like he was trying to dig into her mind. He could not. Terri's mind was like a wall; near nothing could be told about her. "Quick to follow an order" The Sergeant thought out loud, referring to Terri's quick response to being identified. "A good quality.. which is why I want you to investigate the continent of Yoren to find this thief . . dubbed the Reaper Thief."

Terri's posture broke for the slightest of moments at this order, and she knew that The Sergeant knew it. "Yes sir. But, I have to ask, how am I going to cover the entire continent alone?"

"You will start in the capital. From there you will use the cities cart system to visit each city and investigate each inn; he is likely to be staying in one." The Sergeant replied, and turned away from Terri. "You are are dismissed, Lawrence." The Sergeant stated and continued on to give out directions to the other soldiers. All Terri heard as she walked away was The Sergeant directing Herman and Andy–one of the other soldiers–to search the curved peninsula for the thief.

Terri felt a slight sense of sorrow for Herman and Andy, but quickly got over it. Her reasoning for having any feelings towards the matter was that the curved peninsula was the most dangerous place on the continent. The entire area had been gated off and declared it's own country many decades prior, and the only way to get access through is to have a letter from either the king of Akarv, or a military official. However, it was still possible to break through. Then again, no one would want to. The country can not sustain wildlife, and the only things that can grow are a special kind of fire-thriving flowers called Gines. Other than that, the only other things in the country is a mass lava flow that seems to originate nowhere, and a network of caves under the continent.

Terri smirked after her slight sorrow, laughing at the thought of Herman and Andy exploring the peninsula. Andy was afraid of his own shadow, and Herman was a pacifist.

~That Sergeant is to desperate for soldiers.~ Terri smirked in her thoughts. ~I'll bet there's not a reasonable or loyal soldier in that group.~

"Ah" Ryan exhaled as he stopped trotting, Jack catching his breath behind him.

"New Roy" Ryan said under the breath of his next exhale, looking up at the five or so story buildings constructed of nothing but wood and stone.

Earlier that morning Jack and Ryan had left the bar, after Ryan recklessly–yet safely–stole a drink right behind the bartender's back. Since then the two had been walking nonstop to the northeast, to the big-city capital of Yoren: New Roy.

New Roy was the most modernized city on the continent, in the sense that it was the only city with a transportation center. At the base of the city was a large station with railroad tracks pouring from it like the extended tentacles of a squid. Whether they be connected to the tracks or lying upside down off to the side, carts were in an abundance. Each cart was large enough for roughly two people, and had a coal-driven motor on the back that caused the wheels to move.

The tracks went out from New Roy and to the three major cities of Yoren: Taylen, Jern, and Yoren Port. The tracks also went right up to the Heran border, and half a mile or so northeast of the Tedre city Tripoy(named after it's location near the three connecting points of the three main countries).

New Roy itself could be called a ghetto, and for most, the quality of living was poor. There were little to no private homes, just a system of tiny apartment buildings which the locals referred to as tenements. Business, however, was not an issue. Despite the poor living conditions you would not find a man out of a job if you looked high and low with a magnifying glass.

Jack always seemed to dread this city; dread being so closely packed with so many people. But Ryan loved it. If it were not for his status as a crook, and his now constant fear of being caught, this would be the first place he would choose to live.
