After a dozen explosions, Josh found himself on the ground, ears ringing, the room full of smoke. None of the others were badly hurt. Josh didn't look at the mangled body of Melzar for fear of being sick.

"Peace," one of the other six people said. "We shouldn't fight each other. We do the quest together and whoever strikes the killing blow on Elvarg wins, simple as that. Who's with me?"

"I agree," said Josh. "Elvarg is probably stronger than any one of us anyways."

Four others agreed.

"Wait. Where's Ace?" Josh asked.

They all turned to the open door behind them.

"You know what this means," the first speaker said, loading his machine gun.

The others all prepared their weapons and followed him through the door.

Through the doorway was a long hallway. Every so often they would reach an open door leading to a small empty room. Ace had already searched here. Suddenly the hallway ended with an open trapdoor leading down stairs into the darkness.

All but one of them had done Prince Ali Rescue, so five of them including Josh turned on night-vision visors.

"Stay behind and if Ace comes up that trapdoor, shoot him," Josh instructed the man who had to stay behind. Josh led the way down the stairs into the enveloping blackness.

They turned a corner and saw a large object glowing white with infrared radiation. Warm liquid was spewing out of it all over the stairs. Upon closer inspection, they found it was a decapitated demon bleeding out of its neck.

"Hopefully that slowed Ace down a bit," Josh whispered into the radio.

They stepped over the dead beast and continued down the stairs. Finally they reached the bottom of the stairs. They didn't go far before reaching the edge of a deep pit in the ground. There was a ladder and a sign that read:

"Find the key to operate the elevator."

Something large glowed white from the bottom of the pit.

One of the others leaned over the side and fired a machine gun into the thing. They all heard an earsplitting shriek and the place where the bullets hit started fading into grey. Suddenly the gray spot shrunk into the thing and was replaced once more by white.

Hundreds of shrieks filled the air and the thing separated into hundreds of smaller white things that began climbing up the walls of the pit at an unbelievable speed. Now they could see that the pit was full of giant rats. The five men could now see fierce eyes and razor-sharp teeth racing up to attack.

Josh and the others fired, dislodging several from the walls, but it wouldn't be nearly enough.

"Look!" one of them shouted.

On the other side of the pit was an elevator door. A key was already turned in the lock.

"Ace must have already gotten the key somehow! Let's go!"

They all ran across the slim walkway that went around both sides of the pit. Meanwhile the rats were getting closer and closer to the top.

Suddenly one of the rodents launched itself from the side of the pit and locked its claws onto the helmet of one of them. He flailed his arms around wildly, firing his machine gun into the air.

"No!" they yelled as he stumbled towards the edge of the pit and fell, screaming, into the pit of rats.

There was a sickening crunch and they saw a white figure fade grey as it was swarmed with smaller white objects.

"Keep running!" one of them yelled.

They finally reached the elevator and Josh turned around, blasting a rat out of the air mid-jump.

"****! The elevator is probably at the top of the house since Ace was the last one to use it!" one of them yelled as they waited for the door to open.

"We have to hold them off!" Josh yelled.

The group opened fire, taking out as many of the rodents as they could. One of them jumped up, landing on Josh's head and began pulling his helmet off. One of the others used an arm-blade to skewer the monster and throw it back into the horde.

There was a ding as the elevator door opened. The group shuffled backwards into the compartment, still firing. Josh pressed the close door button once they were all through. The steel doors slammed shut, slicing a rat in half. There were no safety features on this elevator, luckily.

They all collapsed onto the floor as the compartment slowly moved upwards.

"Don't forget, there's still Ace," Josh said.

They got up and prepared to come out swinging once the elevator reached the top.

Ding.

The door slowly slid open. They were forced to deactivate the night-vision by a blindingly bright orb that hovered in the center of the room. They were standing in the middle of a scale model of the RuneSpace world, a three dimensional map of the solar system. They could see hundreds of tiny asteroids floating past, with the planets beyond them, and finally the sun in the center of the room.

Josh noticed that the planets and asteroids were all rotating around the sun. He had never thought about it before, but all the planets in RuneSpace orbitted the sun at different speeds so that they were always aligned. Then what was on the other side of the sun?

Josh stepped out of the elevator and found that there was no gravity in this room. He floated along past the sun. Beyond it sat a red-brown sphere, covered in burning lava and hot barren earth. Crandor.

Josh swam around to where he could see the others as they sat in the elevator.

"Hey come over here! I found Crandor!"

They all launched off the elevator and floated towards Josh. One of them was on a collision course with the model of the sun. Half his body passed through the glowing orb and they were shocked to see him scream in pain before his body went limp. When his body floated past the sun, they were horrified to see that the part that went through had been melted off.

Someone cackled, "They teleport you to the planet they represent!"

Ace was floating under the cieling, rocket launcher in hand.

Josh jumped out of the way as Ace was thrown upward by the rocket launch. The rocket struck one of the other two, killing both of them. Josh turned around in time to see himself floating towards Falador. He curled up into a ball so that he would all fit through.

He landed in Falador square, drawing looks to his bloody, scratched armor. But before anybody could ask him questions he took off toward the POM portal. Inside he saw his adamantite single-operator spaceship, just as the Champions Guild had promised.

Jumping into the cockpit, he roared out of the portal and set a course for Crandor. It would be up to him to make sure Ace didn't win after what he had done.

He rocketed through the solar system and past the sun. Sure enough, he saw the real version of Crandor floating there, just like the one in the model. Now where was Elvarg?

Josh brought his ship closer to the surface of the planet and spotted a large volcano dominating the landscape. It would be a good place to start. Josh saw a cave on the side of the volcano and brought the ship in to land on the rock shelf that led into the hole in the mountain.

Josh was getting out when he saw a fireball fly out of the hole, followed by a massive, scaled, green monster. Josh jumped back into his ship as the creature roared.

Josh was about to fire his lasers when he remembered that dragon skin resisted lasers well. Instead he armed the missile system, but before he could lock on, the dragon took off, knocking the ship off the cliff.

Josh fired up the engines and saved the ship from the long fall, bringing it back up to face the dragon once more.

Elvarg took flight, beating her leathery green wings and rocketing toward Josh's ship. She latched on and battered the ship with her spiked tail. The added weight was forcing the ship down towards the rocky ground...

Josh pressed the button to open the cockpit. Leaning out of his seat, he stabbed his arm-blade into the dragon repeatedly until it released the ship.

Josh closed the cockpit and righted the ship, turning around to face Elvarg. The mighty dragon pulled a boulder off the side of the volcano with its claws and hurled it at Josh, who barely managed to maneuver around it.

Elvarg opened its maw and spewed deadly fire all over the ship as Josh raced towards the dragon, locking the creature in his sights and arming a missile. Suddenly Josh broke through the stream of fire. Elvarg was straight ahead. Josh was about to fire the missile when suddenly a ship flew out of nowhere, crashing into Elvarg. Its momentum carried both dragon and spaceship into the side of the volcano, where the ship exploded, killing Elvarg.

Josh looked up and saw Ace hanging from a parachute as he floated down to the ground.

Josh flicked him off as Ace disappeared in a flash of light, teleported to the Champions Guild to recieve his reward.

Quest Incomplete.

Chapter 12: Finale

Josh set his radio to send a message to PLAACE01.

"That was my kill! You and your clan can meet me at the Arena to settle this once and for all."

Josh called his clan together, enraged over the outcome of the quest. They all made their way to the Arena for what would be the final showdown between the Dragons of RuneSpace and the Warriors of Legend.

In the meeting room once more, Josh sat on one side of the bartering table and Ace on the other. They agreed to a grassland battle with twenty players on each side.

"So what are we betting on this time?" Ace asked in his full runite armor.

"Just a second," Josh replied.

He called MODBRIAN, who appeared in the room in adamantite armor with a gold crown on his chest.

"What do you need, Josh?" Brian asked.

Josh took a deep breath and began. "We're settling a clan dispute in the Arena. I want you to permanently ban the loser of the fight. Even if I lose, ban my account."

"What?" roared Ace.

"It's the only way to solve the problem permanently. You scared?"

"No. I agree to the terms," said Ace, regaining his composure.

"Ok," said Brian. "Are you sure about this Josh?"

"Yes."

"Then proceed to the waiting room. Good luck," the moderator said gravely as the twenty best players from each team filed to the elevators.

There was a POM portal inside the waiting room that they used to withdraw several vehicles. Josh's plan was simple, everybody would be in a vehicle, because it was safer. Also, there would be no single-operator vehicles so that drivers could focus on driving and weapon operators could focus on shooting. Finally, he would have several vehicles of each type in order to deal with any combat situation.

They ended up withdrawing three triple-operator adamantite tanks, three double-operator adamantite spaceships, and two double-operator adamantite Light Assault Vehicles. Josh put his eighteen warriors in the different vehicles according to their strengths. Tyler would drive one of the LAVs and Josh would operate the laser cannon turret on it.

They heard the muffled voice of an announcer declaring the winner of the previous battle. The elevator began to hum as it was lifted to the ground level. The battle was about to begin.

With a clank they reached the ground level. A grated gate separated them from the battlefield. Josh pressed his face up against the grate to get a look before the battle began.

"3"

"Looks mostly flat with a few hills and trees. Not much to worry about as far as terrain," Josh announced.

"2"

"Spaceship operators, stay out of range of ground attacks. Kill any enemy birds before blasting the hell out of their ground armor."

"1"

Josh ran toward his vehicle and jumped in place behind the turret.

"FIGHT!"

The gate slid open and the vehicles rolled out of the elevators onto the battlefield.

"Spread out so they can't get us all at once!" Josh bellowed into the radio.

The vehicles fanned out, stretching the width of the arena. As they roared over the grassland, they could see that DoR had two tanks, two LAVs, two spaceships, and ten footsoldiers.

"The infantry will be easy. Take them out first but don't forget about the armor!" Josh commanded.

The battle began.

"Hold still for a second," Kyle, who operated the 85mm in one of the tanks, yelled at Roxas who was driving. "I could take out that LAV if we weren't moving!"

Roxas stopped the tank but yelled back, "We're supposed to take out the infantry first!"

It was too late. The main cannon fired, rocking the tank. In the distance, the shell hit the front end of one of DoR's LAVs, flipping it back over front and sending it crashing into a tree.

"Nice shot," Roxas conceded.

"Move!" yelled the woman operating the tank's optional machine gun, a newer TWoL recruit. "That ******* in the full rune is pointing a rocket launcher straight at us!"

Ace slid backwards as a rocket exited the weapon on his arm, destroying the tank. Kyle managed to crawl out of the wreckage before being finished off by Ace's arm-blade.

Josh spotted Ace and turned the laser cannon on him, but missed as Ace dove behind the burning tank. Josh cursed and turned back to the line of infantry, burning a swathe through their ranks with a red laser.

Above the spaceships were having an all-out dogfight.

Josh had made the Z twins, Thomas and Mark, pilots in two of the spaceships with two of the newer recruits gunning for them. The other ship was piloted by Alex K. with Zed manning the laser cannon.

With uncanny, unspoken teamwork the twins approached one of the ships from two different angles. As it dodged fire from Mark's ship, Thomas's partner fired a laser straight through the vehicle, sending it crashing to the ground in a deafening explosion.

The other spaceship proved tougher to defeat. Zed did severe damage before his ship was targetted by the enemy's missile system and shot down.

The twins turned to the other ship and split up, Mark coming at it from above and Thomas from below. But Thomas swooped too low and an enemy tank seized the opportunity to blast it out of the sky. Luckily Mark was successful in bringing down the last enemy ship.

Now Mark and his partner were free to rain destruction down on the remaining armor from above. Mark swooped down and the gunner managed to do major damage to one of the tanks with his laser cannon. He pulled up and turned around to make another pass.

DoR realized that this would be a problem, so they all turned their weapons skyward and fired simultaneously. It would take incredible skill for any one of them to hit the ship at the speed it was going, but Mark was unable to avoid the barrage of all of them combined. He swerved out of the way of the remaining tank's 85mm shell and right into the path of a footsoldier's laser, slicing his right wing off. The ship spiraled out of control.

Josh cried out in frustration as Mark's ship crashed into one of TWoL's tanks, destroying both vehicles.

Meanwhile the four remaining footsoldiers ran up to the last tank. Option turrets took out two of them but the remaining two jumped up on top of the vehicle into the weapons' blind spot. Ripping the hatch open, Ace fired his rocket launcher into the machine and jumped out of the way as TWoL's last tank was destroyed from the inside.

DoR's other LAV pulled up beside Josh and Tyler out of nowhere. The drivers were right next to each other and struggled to pull out their weapons. The enemy was first, putting dozens of bullets in Tyler's armor.

"No!" Josh screamed, blasting away at the other LAV's engine with his laser cannon.

The other vehicle exploded, sending Josh flying out of his seat. The force of the explosion stopped Josh's motion forward, causing him to fall straight down as the two vehicles flew past, coming to a halt as they collided.

TWoL's remaining LAV pulled up beside Josh, who jumped into the passenger seat.

"What now?" the driver asked.

"Head for the tank," Josh commanded, reloading his handheld laser cannon.

By this time, DoR had four people left, Ace and another footsoldier as well as two people in a tank. TWoL had all three of its surviving members in a LAV, it's last remaining vehicle.

Nick, who was operating the LAV's laser cannon, blasted the nearby footsoldier as the vehicle turned around and began bearing down on the damaged tank, DoR's last vehicle.

Helen, the LAV's driver, made a hard right to dodge the tank's 85mm, causing the back end of the vehicle to fishtail. Back under control, she began circling the tank as Nick slowly burned through the thick tank armor with the laser cannon.

Suddenly the tank's main cannon locked on the vehicle. Helen had no time to dodge the shell. Josh stood up and fired his handheld laser over her head, melting part of the 85mm gun. When it fired the shell struck the melted part of the barrel and exploded.

The crew on the LAV screamed with joy as the entire tank erupted in flames. Their celebration was short-lived, however, as Ace appeared out of nowhere and landed a rocket right in front of the LAV, sending it flying.

Josh was stunned, but managed to get out of the wreck with only minor injuries. The other two were not as lucky. Now it was just Josh and Ace, once again.

They stood several dozen feet apart among the burning wreckages and charred corpses of their teammates. Ace fired first, sending a rocket straight towards Josh, who jumped out of the way of the slow-moving projectile and fired a burst of red laser. But he was inaccurate and Ace managed to load another rocket into his weapon.

This time he aimed for the ground where Josh was standing. Josh had to jump behind the wreckage of the LAV to avoid shrapnel from the explosion. When it was clear he ran forwards, firing lasers at his opponent. Several struck home, but Josh was forced to dive out of the way as another rocket came soaring towards him.

Suddenly Josh's laser cannon beeped. He was out of laser runes.
