They had been killing goblins for a while now. Both had recieved class 1 overshields, and a little bit of field medicine. In addition to this, Josh had recieved some more white laser runes and a few fuel runes. Tyler had recieved razor-sharp, serrated attachments to go on the ends of his swords to increase damage. They each had about 500 gold pieces.

Making their way to the general store, they found it quite crowded. New players were showing off their finds to others. A few had spiked balls to go on the end of swords making it more like a mace. These also strengthened one's overshield. One player was drawing a big crowd as he showed off an iron machine gun.

"Excuse me. Do you have anything that isn't bronze?" asked Tyler.

"Sorry, you'd have to go to Varrock for that," said the shopkeeper, a friendly artificial intelligence with gray hair wearing an apron.

"Then do you have ships for us to get to Varrock?"

"Out back. Talk to my assistant."

Suddenly there was a commotion. Apparently one of the players had grabbed the iron machine gun and taken off. Without warning the player froze. The gun in his hands disappeared and rematerialized back in the hands of its owner.

"Rodney H. you have been detected stealing. You will remain immobilized until a moderator can come and deal with you," said a disembodied voice.

The thief's eyes darted around in their sockets, panicking.

"Shoulda known better!" laughed the shopkeeper. "Now that'll be a lesson to the rest of you. The same thing will happen if you steal from a store."

Josh and Tyler laughed and exited out the back door. The shopkeeper's assistant was standing among a group of bronze tanks and spaceships.

"Hey there! Can I help you?"

"How much is a spaceship?"

"You can get a single-op for 2k or a double-op for 3.5. We don't stock anything other than that."

"Great! We're stuck on Lumbridge!" said Tyler, exasperated.

"Tell you what," said the assistant, whispering. "You give me 50gp for some fuel runes, and 50 more for my time, and my kid Stevie'll take you in our ship."

Josh and Tyler were shocked. Was he supposed to do that or was this artificial intelligence truly remarkable? They agreed and handed over 50gp each.

The assistant whistled, "Stevie!"

An AI boy who was polishing the tanks looked up. He had the same black hair and green eyes as the shop assistant.

"Grab some fuel runes from the shop and take these two young men to Varrock in the family's triple-op."

The kid did as he was told and soon they were sitting in the cockpit of a triple-operator bronze spaceship.

"So what do we do?" asked Tyler. The two friends were sitting in chairs behind and slightly above Stevie, who had a dashboard of complex controls in front of him.

"See those laser turrets?" asked Stevie pointing to two battle-stations connected to laser cannon turrets. "Hopefully you don't do anything."

They lifted off smoothly and were soon sailing towards Varrock.

"Uh-oh," said Stevie.

Outside, a winged shape was approaching.

"It's a baby green dragon, ****!" (c) A.I. definitely wasn't supposed to do that.

There was a sound of a collision and they heard claws raking across the roof of the vessel.

"Overshields at 72%!" read Stevie. "Well don't just sit there! Do something for ****'* sake!"

Josh and Tyler hurried to battle-stations. Josh looked around all over his screen. There it was, gliding next to the wing and tearing at the bronze plate. Josh fired a silent, white laser into the creature, burning its shoulder slightly. The baby green dragon detached and flew off.

"Lasers are pretty weak against dragon hide. At least we showed that thing that we aren't easy prey, so it won't be back. Those things aren't supposed to hang out around here anyway," explained Stevie. "Here we are. Varrock."

The ship landed in a space-port and the two got off.

"Hey, could you guys wait up for a second," said Stevie.

"Sure," said Josh, turning around. "What is it?"

"Well, I don't really have any friends back on Lumbridge. None of the NPCs are my age. I was wondering if I could give you my ID code, then we could talk to each other over the radio in your helmets, maybe meet up for some adventuring later on."

"Sure!" said both Josh and Tyler. They had not known about their radios yet.

"Ok, my code is NPCSTE01. You should probably find out what your own codes are in case you are separated."

Josh and Tyler used voice commands to control the radio in their helmets. They added NPCSTE01 to their list of contacts and asked what their ID code was. Josh was PLAJOS04 and Tyler was PLATYL09.

Finally they said goodbye to Stevie and turned to the overwhelming metropolis that was Varrock.

"It's getting late," said Josh. "Want to save that for tomorrow."

"I guess we should," replied Tyler grudgingly.

That was the end of Josh's first day playing RuneSpace. He went to bed but could barely sleep because of his excitement. The next day would be Friday, and after that the weekend. Josh wondered if he would ever stop playing between 2:30 P.M. on Friday and 7:30 A.M. on Monday.

Chapter 4: Varrock

Not surprisingly, both Josh and Tyler called in sick the next day of school. Virtual reality was known to occasionally cause nausea and headache, or increase symptoms if someone was already suffering, so children were still allowed to call in sick. With parents gone, they plugged into RuneSpace and continued their adventure.

They found they were standing right where they signed off, still wearing their mechanized bronze armor. Last night they had been the first ones to make it to Varrock, as most people were still trying to buy a ship on Lumbridge. Now a few all-nighters had made it over and bronze single-ops were parked all over the space-port.

The two friends went into the city and found a store selling ships, but it was still too expensive, so they left the city in search of more goblins to fight. They were walking when they heard gunfighting in a cave they hadn't even noticed. They hurried in to investigate and were shocked at what they saw.

Inside a moderator wearing steel armor and wielding dual mithril guns was taking on a massive green giant! The moderator had put dozens of holes in the monster, but it was still standing. The moderator rolled out of the way of a kick, but got swept up by a swipe of the giant.

"We should help," said Josh.

"I guess."

Tyler rushed forwards with his blades drawn and sliced at the monster's leg, causing it to drop the moderator. Josh loaded his laser cannon with runes and took aim. The giant had barely been affected by Tyler's blades, but the laser burned a hole right through it, causing it to fall dead.

"Congratulations, Josh L., you just gained level 2 Energy. You may now use class 1 blue lasers," said the disembodied voice.

But Josh and Tyler were busy picking up the injured moderator and taking him outside before another giant showed up. On the way out Tyler scooped up what the moss giant dropped.

Josh used his field medicine pack on the moderator, reviving him.

"That was very honorable of you two," said the moderator, getting up. "Most newbies would have let me die and looted my armor and weapons. My name is Brian. Yours?"

Josh and Tyler introduced themselves.

"Tell you what," the moderator said, writing something on a slip of paper. "Take this to the ranging store in Varrock and they'll fix you up with something good. Also, my ID code is MODBRIAN, so you can contact me if you need something."

"Thanks," said Josh. "One thing though. Why did the laser work so well? It hardly did anything to the baby green dragon."

"That's the tricky thing about lasers. Against most armor and monsters, they're the most powerful weapon in the game, but a class 4 red laser might as well be a flashlight if you try to use it against dragonhide."

The two players parted ways with the mod and returned to the city.

"What did the giant drop?" asked Josh.

"500 coins and an iron laser cannon!" exclaimed Tyler. "I guess you can have the laser, since you got the Energy level and everything."

They made it to the general store, where they did some trading. Both sold their bronze laser cannons. Josh equipped the iron one and Tyler gave him his spare runes. Josh sold his machine gun and gave Tyler the unused clip.

All in all they had a little over 4,000 gold pieces.

"We'll probably buy two bronze single-ops, but we have to check by the ranging store first," Josh told the shopkeeper.

The ranging shop was a little to the east and was filled with guns of all types and sizes. Out back were different varieties of tanks.

"We recieved this voucher from a moderator," explained Josh as he approached this shopkeeper.

"Mmhmm. Come with me." The NPC led them out back. "It's for an iron tank, so what kind do you want?"

"Could we get two single-ops?"

"You could, but since you're friends with Brian I'll advise you against it."

"The single-ops are worthless. You can't drive and shoot at the same time," continued the shopkeeper. "You'll be wanting a double-op. One person drives, the other shoots."

"What are the other types like?" asked Josh, thinking of Stevie.

"Triple-operator: one drives, one shoots the big gun, and a third operates an option turret."

"Option turret?"

"Yeah, you can put different weapons on the option turret, machine gun, laser cannon, grenade thrower, just about anything you can think of. Quad has a driver, big gun, and two option turrets. The big quint has a driver, TWO big guns, and two option turrets."

"The triple sounds like what we need. Could we get a laser cannon for the option turret?"

"Sure thing," said the shopkeeper.

The friendly shopkeeper showed them how to operate the tank and gave them 100 85mm rounds for the main gun as well as 100 blue runes for the laser cannon turret.

"Would you like anything else?"

They decided to be courteous and buy some more ammunition for Tyler's gun in return for all the help he had given them. The duo still had enough money to buy two bronze spaceships but they decided to take the tank for a spin first.

Josh drove while Tyler operated the gun. They had been driving for a few minutes when they saw a village coming up. They saw a standard nearby, a goblin skull was on top of the pole and a plain, torn, brown banner hung beneath it. This was a goblin village.

They heard an alarm bell coming from the watchtower overlooking the village entrance. Suddenly they saw three shapes leaving the village. They were faster and larger than any goblins. As the shapes came closer, Josh thought they looked sort of like a go-cart.

So he was incredibly surprised when he saw that it was being driven by a goblin and even more surprised when he saw a machine gun mounted on the back being operated by another goblin.

"Tyler shoot them!"

Suddenly bullets collided with the tank.

"Overshield at 93%. I'm switching the overshield off, our tank armor should repel small arms a little better than an energy shield," yelled Josh over the battle.

"Almost got it..." Tyler's face was right up against the screen as he took aim.

An explosion rocked the tank. Josh realized the 85mm had fired when one of the goblin cars exploded.

Tyler yelled with excitement, shoved another shell into the barrel, and took aim.

Josh stopped the tank so that Tyler could aim better. He wouldn't be able to dodge bullets in the tank anyway.

There was another explosion above them and another goblin-car was sent flying into the air. The cramped inside of the tank was getting hot now.

There was some activity near the goblin village. Some more goblins were setting up mortars. Josh got up and ran to the laser turret.

He aimed and pulled the trigger, melting through the mortar, disabling it and killing the goblin standing right behind it. One of the goblins tried dropping a mortar into the melted launcher. The barrel exploded, killing him and one of the goblins on the other mortar team.

But the other mortar team had fired a shot. Josh hurried to the controls once more. He had a few seconds at most before their new tank was seriously damaged, perhaps destroyed. He shifted the machine into gear and it roared forwards. Not a second later there was an explosion behind them and some shrapnel crashed against their armor.

The mortar team was readjusting the launcher to the tank's new position. Josh took that opportunity to take them out with a blue laser.

There was another explosion from the 85mm and the last of the goblin-cars went up in flames.

"Come on! Let's storm the village!" yelled Tyler, thrilled with the battle.

"No, we took some damage already. We have no idea how many dozens of goblins we'd be up against or what kind of weapons they have."

Tyler agreed, disappointed. He got out and looted the goblin corpses while Josh rolled the tank in between him and the village as cover.

Most of the rounds for the mounted machine guns had gone off in the flames, but Tyler salvaged a few for his gun. He found that one of the mounted guns was still intact. The developers had designed the game so that almost every piece of equipment was a universal fit, so they thought it could probably be put on a vehicle.

There were also lots of coins, bronze blade upgrades, overshield upgrades, even an iron helmet.

Josh felt it was a very successful mission as they returned to the POM portal to park the tank.

Chapter 5: Clans

They reached the portal to POMs in the center of Varrock. It was a slightly raised metal platform with a glowing purple ring on top. There was a metal ramp leading up to it that Josh drove up.

A voice asked, "Go to Josh L.'s moon or Tyler M.'* moon?"

"Yeah, Josh. Where are we going to keep it?" asked Tyler.

"Can we share a moon?" Josh asked the portal.

"Speak the name of your clan loudly and clearly."

Josh looked at Tyler, who was puzzled as well. "The Warriors of Legend," said Josh.

"That clan does not exist. Would you like to create it?"

"Yes."

"Processing. Please inquire at the Varrock Palace for formal registration within 24 hours.

The world around them dissolved into white light and they appeared on a barren grey orb in space. Other than the portal beneath them, there was nothing here. They parked the tank next to the portal and stepped back onto the metal surface.

"Return?"

"Yes."

They were standing back in Varrock without their tank.

"So what do you want to do now? Register our clan or buy some more stuff?" Tyler asked.

"There might be a fee for registering the clan. We better do that first," explained Josh.

"You always think of everything. You should be the clan leader."

Josh had to admit Tyler rushed into things a little. So they made their way to Varrock Palace. They made it to a secretary who asked what they wanted.

"I'd like to register a clan called The Warriors of Legend."

"I see. I'll need the ID of the leader, the IDs of all members, and a 500gp fee."

"There goes most of what we made off raiding that goblin village." whispered Tyler.

"It'll be fine," said Josh. He gave them their ID codes.

"Thank you. Now if you need to register any new members or new property, you can contact the ID code CLANARCHIVE with your radio."

They left the palace. Josh was thrilled that he was now a clan leader!

They used their remaining money to buy two bronze spaceships, as planned. Tyler removed one of the laser cannons and replaced it with the mounted machine gun from the goblin-cars. By selling the laser and a few miscellaneous items the goblins dropped back to the general store, they were able to afford a lot more fuel and laser runes.

They found that the ships had a radio that broadcast on an open channel, so people could talk to each other in space.

Josh and Tyler were soon orbiting around Varrock.

"Let's go see what the other planets are like," suggested Tyler.

In RuneSpace, the planets are much closer together than in real life. In the real world, it would take days to get to Mars or Venus, the two closest planets. In addition, Venus is much hotter than Earth and Mars is much colder. In RuneSpace, interplanetary travel takes only a few minutes. Also, even though there is quite a difference in temperature between the first planet and the last, all are normal enough for humans to survive.

The planet closest to the sun appeared to be desert in most places and tropical rainforest everywhere else. But the two adventurers wouldn't get a chance to see it up close, because suddenly something bumped into Tyler's ship.

"What was that?" asked Tyler.

Josh looked over. It was another ship. This one was an iron double-op. It bashed against Tyler's ship several more times. Because they were not in the asteroid belt, it did no damage, but it was getting annoying. Finally Tyler snapped and hit back. The ship turned around and started flying back towards Varrock. Tyler followed it.

"Wait Tyler!" Josh had no choice but to go along with it.

All three ships were racing away from the sun at top speed. Tyler kept smashing the nose of his ship into the mysterious intruders, who wavered but kept their course steady.

Planets flew by and finally the asteroid belt was in sight.
