They marveled at the impressive cavern and watched the TzHaar people do their tasks. Most involved mining or smithing, and some collected fragments of obsidian to be used in the making of TzHaarian treasures.

"Excuse me?" Kaisen asked one of them. "Where can I find the obsidian craftsman?"

The creature gave him an odd look. "TzHan-Kozr? Over there, beside the bank." There was a building there, and they went inside to see TzHan-Kozr.

The TzHaaran looked up at them. "My business is closed for today," he said, shooing them away.

"It is not about business," Saren said rudely. "We need you to do something."

"Let me handle this," Kaisen told Saren quietly. TzHan-Kozr, we are searching for an ingredient to cure a freezing curse."

"Ah, an enhanced fire talisman. I have the obsidian to craft it, if you have a fire talisman."

Kaisen reached into his pocket and produced the talisman. TzHan-Kozr took it and said, "We have all the necessary equipment, except that you do not hold the power of fire."

"What?"

"I have sworn to give my more powerful artifacts to only those who have mastery of fire."

"I can cast some fire magic," Kaisen said hopefully.

TzHan-Kozr shook his head. "That's not what I mean. I mean that only one who has armor made of fire can receive the talisman."

"What kind of armor is made of fire?"

TzHan-Kozr's eyes twinkled. "The fire cape," he said. "The ultimate prize of the TzHaar, it can only be obtained by proving yourself in the Fight Caves."

"We'll do it," Saren said.

"What are the Fight Caves?" Kaisen asked.

"A cave in which we will release a series of enemies for you to fight. You must topple them all, and then we will release the Tz-Tok-Jad, the ultimate monster. If you succeed then, you will be rewarded with the fire cape, the talisman, and the eternal friendship of the TzHaar."

Kaisen nodded at Saren.

"We'll do it," Saren replied again.

TzHan-Kozr smiled. "Follow me." He led Saren, Kaisen, and Kalda to the opening of a large cavern. As they entered, the large stone door to the cavern slammed shut behind them.

------Chapter Six: The Lair of the Beast-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The cavern was silent, and Kaisen, Saren, and Kalda stood alone in the center. They could hear nothing, and they could see nothing. The cavern was empty, but they impatiently awaited the arrival of the TzHaar monsters.

Something moved in the shadows. The trial of the Fight Caves was beginning.

Kaisen fired a water strike into the air, which blasted a firey bat-like creature down to the ground, turning it to ashes. "Look out!" Saren shouted as he pointed across the room. A large beast appeared in their line of sight. It stood on two legs, and it had spikes extending from its body. The spikes fired out of its body, shooting across the cavern in an attempt to impale the travelers.

"Be careful," Kalda warned. "Make sure there aren't anymore of them, or we could end up dead."

Of course, there were more.

The cavern was soon full of monsters. The team of adventurers battled hard, trying to keep the army of TzHaar beasts at bay. Kalda used her black warhammer to batter the bats and weaker beasts to pieces. Kaisen, meanwhile, blasted the rangers with his magic. Saren had the hard job, however, for he had to go toe to toe with high level creatures such as the level 180 Yt-Miekjot and the unnamed level 300 beasts.

Over time, as Kaisen, Saren, and Kalda were beginning to tire, and their blows became less ferocious, the army had thinned. The advance of creatures stopped, and eventually, Saren, Kaisen, and Kalda were alone in the cavern again.

"We did it," Kaisen said between gasps for breath.

"That was challenging," Kalda agreed. Saren said nothing.

Kaisen walked over to the stone wall where they had entered. He knocked on the wall, shouting, "We finished your little test! Let us out!"

"Um, Kaisen?" Kalda asked quietly.

"What?"

"Do you remember what TzHan-Kozr said as we entered, about the Tz-Tok-Jad?"

"Yeah, what about it?"

Kalda pointed into the shadows. "I think that's it over there."

The blast came too fast for them to do anything about it. The beast had barely moved in the shadows, and Kalda had spotted it. But Kaisen and Saren could not see it until it struck. It was a pulse of magic, far stronger than anything Kaisen had ever seen, and he had seen the great mages of Yanille. The blast shattered the silence of the cavern, and Kalda barely had time to scream as it burst into the group.

The magical blast connected with Kalda's body, and it exploded with a burst of fire. The ground was charred and smoking, and as the smoke cleared, the spot was empty. Kalda was no longer there, as her body was incinerated in the ferocious magic of the Tz-Tok-Jad.

Kaisen slumped to the ground where his friend had been. She had been there only a second before, but she was gone now. He couldn't believe that she was dead.

Saren took it differently. "Stand up, Kaisen," he said.

"Do you not care?" Kaisen asked bitterly.

"Of course I care!" Saren snapped back. "The problem is that we have bigger problems right now. Now stand and fight, or we will share her fate."

The Tz-Tok-Jad blasted another magical pulse at Kaisen and Saren. "Look out!" Kaisen yelled.

Saren immediately turned on his prayer, which shielded him from the onslaught. Kaisen blasted back, piercing the monster with a fire bolt. "Move in!"

Saren obeyed, moving in close and striking the beast with his whip. His protect from melee prayer shielded him, but the Tz-Tok-Jad seemed to be hurt very little by his attacks. As the battle dragged on, neither side gained any ground.

Saren, who was already tired from the previous waves of monsters, was nearly taxed to the limit, in both his physical strength and his prayer. Kaisen knew that something had to be done, or Saren would die. Then, he got an idea.

"Saren! Move the battle to your left!"

Saren continued fighting, but he managed to maneuver the beast to the left, near the lava pit on the side of the arena. Kaisen, meanwhile, lined up his shot. He fired a wind blast at the Tz-Tok-Jad, but the monster was not budged. It only leaned back slightly.

Using some physics knowledge he learned at the Academy of Yanille, Kaisen fired three rapid wind blasts at the Tz-Tok-Jad at specific locations. The monster lost its balance, its massive form teetering on the edge.

Its body rightened itself. Using its range combat style, it fired a long spike from its back at the mage.

Kaisen was helpless. The projectile fired across the battlefield and pierced its way through Kaisen's chest. His eyes became cold as he felt his own blood pour over his robes. His eyes went blank, and he collapsed, dead, on the ground.

Saren turned to the beast. Kaisen and Kalda was dead. The quest was failed. He was at least going to go out in style. He struck the monster's legs with his whip and tackled it, sending them both over the edge.

Saren held onto the stone face of the cliff just long enough to watch the body of the Tz-Tok-Jad melt in the magma. Then, he let gravity carry his body into the pit as well.

What would become of him? Saren thought in the moment of his death. He might die, of course, and pass on to the next world, or the Gaze of Saradomin might take him to Falador alive. Neither way would end well for him. He couldn't face his superiors with Kaisen dead. The dragon egg would be lost, and the forces of Saradomin would lose the battle with Zamorak's evil army.

Saren woke up, and in neither place that he envisioned. He was still in the TzHaar region, and Kaisen and Kalda sat beside him. They were alive. Though Saren wouldn't show it, he had never been happier.

"What is going on?" Saren asked in bewilderment.

"We don't know," Kaisen answered. I only remember being stabbed, and suddenly I woke up here.

"Same here," Kalda added.

"Allow me to explain," said TzHan-Kozr. "You all died in there, but it was not your bodies that died. You unknowingly stepped into a temporary fighting body that contained your souls for the battle. It is a powerful magic of the TzHaar, and it saved you. And, since the Tz-Tok-Jad died before you did, I guess I must go through with my part of the deal." The TzHaar handed Saren a fire talisman made of obsidian and a fire cape. "They are yours."

Kaisen, smiling, took the talisman from Saren. "One down, one to go."

Kalda nodded. "Next stop, Isafdar."
