Saren hushed them. He was tense, that is, tenser than usual. The thought of a beast lurking in the same dark cave had made him uncomfortable to be around. "I don't like the look of this," Saren said grimly. He pointed to huge claw marks on the stone wall. "Whatever it is, I think it's pretty strong if it can scar solid rock."

Saren pushed them aside. He gazed away into the darkness, and Kaisen could tell that he had heard something in the shadowy enclosure. "Don't make any movements or sounds," he whispered in the softest tones possible. There was no need to question why.

Suddenly, Kaisen felt the familiar shiver run all throughout his body. The dragon egg was freezing. His teeth began to chatter with the cold. Saren glared at him in an attempt to quiet him, but it was no use. The egg was draining all his heat. He was going to die if he didn't do something. Before they left the Sage, he had given Kaisen runes to make up for the ones he lost in the perilous climb up Mount Trollweiss. Kaisen tried to bear the curse's freezing effects, but he eventually couldn't hold on any more. He dug into the bag and pulled out enough runes and gave the egg a fire bolt. Immediately, the cold wave over him and the dragon receded, but the creature in the darkness was also alerted of their position.

A loud roar echoed throughout the cavern, and the loud rumbling came out of the shadows. "Give us some light!" Saren commanded Kaisen, and Kaisen fired a fire bolt into the darkness. The momentary illumination revealed a wolf, but it was not ordinary. It was made of ice, and it was gargantuan. Saren stood bravely in its path. "Go!" he shouted to Kaisen and Kalda. "Run and get out of the way!"
Kaisen led Kalda through the tunnels, trying to put distance between him and the beast. Saren, meanwhile, tumbled out the way of the wolf's charge, and he lashed out at its leg with the whip. The wolf tripped and fell to the ground, but it leapt back up and continued the battle. Saren struck it down again, but it was too resilient to stay down for long. The beast struck with its claws, and Saren was struck, putting a dent in his platebody. Saren winced at the blow, but he fought on like the Temple Knight he was.
Kaisen led Kalda far away, but he stopped. "I can't just leave him behind," he said guiltily.
Kalda sighed. "Do what you have to do," she said.
Kaisen nodded and pulled out an unlit torch. He set fire to it with a fire strike and took off the way he came, back into the deadly fray of battle.

As Kaisen reached the battlefield, he saw the creature and Saren locked in furious combat. Saren was panting, tired from the long and ferocious battle. Kaisen could tell that Saren's blows were getting less and less effective against the ice wolf. Kaisen knew that he had to do something.

Kaisen hurled a fire bolt at the monster, and the blast collided and burst into flame as it hit the beast. The wolf recoiled in pain, but it didn't last for long. The wolf turned and charged at Kaisen. "NO!" Saren shouted, but he could not outrun the wolf. The creature beared down on Kaisen, its next meal in its sights.

Kaisen faced the beast head on, trying to come up with an idea of how to defeat the monstrosity. Then, it hit him (an idea, not the monster). It was suicidal, but there was a slim chance that he and Saren could escape alive. "Look out, Saren," Kaisen shouted in warning, but there was no way Saren could have known what he was going to do. Kaisen dug some runes out of the pouch on his belt and shot an earth bolt straight up to the cavernous ceiling.

The ceiling crumbled at the force of the spell, and huge chunks of rock began to plummet to the ground. As luck would have it, an exceptionally large piece of stone fell directly onto the ice wolf, burying it under the debris.

Kaisen ducked low to the ground, trying to avoid the nightmare that he had caused. The threat of being torn to pieces by a ravenous beast was replaced by the threat of being buried alive.

Suddenly, Kaisen felt a strong grip on his arm. It pulled him away from a falling boulder. Through the chaos, he could see Kalda dragging him away from the cavern.

He felt darkness overcome him, and he fell...

Kaisen awoke a little later, and he was lying in a quiet tunnel. As he rose, he noticed Kalda was there beside him.

"What happened?" he muttered, still shaken from the ordeal.

"It's okay," Kalda reassured him. "The cave-in was isolated to that area. However, the tunnel was completely sealed off, so we can't go back through it."

Kaisen shook off his shock. "What about Saren?"

Kalda pointed down the tunnel, and Kaisen saw Saren standing several yards from them. "I had to go and drag him out too."

"Thank you. If it wasn't for you, both of us would be dead."

Kalda looked at him. "We all have our jobs. It's my task to make sure you don't get yourselves killed."

Saren scowled. "We need to hurry along," he ordered bitterly. "Come on."

Kalda looked at Kaisen, and Kaisen shrugged. Obviously, it hurt Saren to be saved by someone else. Kalda and Kaisen nevertheless followed him along the tunnel to the bottom of the mountain.

---Chapter Two: Army of Shadows----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The tunnel began to look more and more habitable. Torches began to appear along the walls, and the deep reaches of the cavern appeared to be mined thoroughly. All the while, Saren, Kaisen, and Kalda were getting closer to the underground center of dwarf society, Keldagrim.

Then, the caverns got larger and larger until the travelers could see the city in all its splendor. Kalda was overjoyed, for she hadn't been to this city since she was a young child. She began to show Kaisen and Saren the places she knew of, and she began to recount what they were. The city was bright, for the dwarves had lined all the walls with torches and lanterns to illuminate the dark cavern. However, they were unaware of the darkness that was slowly surrounding the city.

Kalda led Kaisen and Saren into a large steel building that rose high in the air over the river that flowed through the center of the city. The building was plain, but it had entrances on both sides of the river. "This is the Consortium," Kalda pointed out. "All the traders of Keldagrim meet here."
Curious, Saren and Kaisen went inside and up the stairs to see for the themselves the hectic business of dwarven trade. The traders from the various companies dashed around the room, doing business with others. The offices of the companies were located on the far sides of the trading floor.
"Wow," Kaisen and Saren muttered at the same time. The center of dwarf finance was a very incredible sight. Kalda, who had seen it before, was not as blown away by the scene.
"There sure are a lot of companies here," Kaisen said.
"Yes, there sure seem to be..." Saren abruptly stopped talking and pulled Kaisen and Kalda behind a pillar, out of sight from the trading floor.

"What's wrong with you?" Kaisen asked indignantly. Saren shushed him.

"Over there," Saren pointed to the office of a company called the Black Ore. The person standing in there was very conspicuous. In the Consortium, Kaisen and Saren stood out because they were humans, and everyone else was a dwarf. Everyone except that stranger in the Black Ore, that is. The man wore full Zamorakan armor with a dragon longsword sheathed at his belt and a malevolent glare on his face. Saren continued to point out the stranger. "He's a Black Knight, a famous one. His name is Iban, and he is probably the most powerful follower of Zamorak besides Agaben. I don't like that he is here. It means that Agaben knows where we are."
